They barely know this for delta amongst healthy adults and kids

Sorry but that is wrong. There is tons of data on delta from all over the world and hospitalisation rates (and how they are influenced by demographic factors and vaccine status etc) are very well understood. There is already enough data from SA to infer something about disease severity and in about 7-10 days time we will have plenty of data of our own to get a very good idea where things are hading in the UK.

Rocket1982 · 16/12/2021 11:12

We actually already do have some relevant data in the UK. In London where the omicron wave is a few days ahead of the rest of the UK the hospitalisation rate has been rising since the beginning of December, the curve has the same shape as the rise in omicron cases with the usual 7 day delay. This suggests that disease severity isn't massively different for omicron than for delta.

visitingagain · 16/12/2021 11:13

@Silverswirl I thought you were actually making a point, but just misinformed. But to suggest people don't know how serious delta is, is just misinformation. Have you actually watched the video?

Welcome to MN, OP.

Boris has an agenda, Dr. Nabarro does not. I know which one I trust.

Exactly. Nailed it.

Hodl · 16/12/2021 11:29

I always find Chris Whitty to be a calming voice among all the chaos. If he says he's extremely worried then it doesn't bode well for the country (imo)

Does anyone else find it completely draining? Especially just before Christmas. We normally have a pre Christmas meal with Aunts, Uncles, cousins etc at a nice restaurant but we've cancelled that as elderly family members are too scared to leave their homes.

Covid is sucking the joy out of everything. Normally I'm optimistic but things just seem grim atm.

Hizz · 16/12/2021 11:31

I just watched it.
Very hard message.

Has Chris Whitty at the moment - it is worth reading as it makes sense as to what we can expect

@echt

Welcome to MN, OP.

I've been here since 2007 but NC about once a month. However you do get new posters / journalists looking for a reaction so I understand it.

Whatisthisworld · 16/12/2021 13:55

I’ve name changed, been here years

I think he seems very clear, calm and considered. He's just saying things people don't want to hear, so it's a case of attack the messenger as in the highly intelligent posts on here like "he's a psychopath" Hmm

User5329806 · 16/12/2021 14:12

Yes OP, I too name change - very often. Too many on here fond of AS. It wasn’t always like that and I used to choose a nice name, now it’s just random ones

PinkTonic · 16/12/2021 14:38

I can still voice my frustration that we’re constantly taking two steps forward and three back. Yes, viruses mutate and survive but by doing that they have to become weaker to ensure that hosts aren’t killed off. Presumably this is what is happening with Omicron. However, listening to some you’d be forgiven for thinking it has mutated into the bubonic plague.

I don’t know how many times this needs to be explained but viruses don’t have to mutate to become weaker, especially viruses like this one which spreads very efficiently BEFORE it causes illness. There is no evolutionary pressure on this virus to become weaker. It has mutated to evade the immunity we have created through vaccines, and natural immunity to an extent at least.

It is all shit. It’s like living a fucking dystopian nightmare, but screaming at the messenger or worse ignoring the message is not at all helpful.

Absolutely.

Youarenotbeingunreasonable · 16/12/2021 23:18

@User5329806 What’s AS?

milkyaqua · 16/12/2021 23:31

Advanced Search.

SparkleWhale · 16/12/2021 23:46

I just got my booster this afternoon because I'm so alarmed by the rates of Omicron. I've been lucky enough to avoid Covid so far and I'm very overweight with comorbidities such as asthma. Im assuming it'll take time for full protection but DH is an essential worker at a supermarket. I'm trying to stay logical but all of this is a lot.
