Are we going to get ill?

That video 😨

Wrongkindofovercoat · 15/12/2021 21:42

Are we going to get ill ?

Why wouldn't we ? We have a much more transmissable variant, so law of averages means we are more likely to get it. You will probably get a 'mild' version which means anything other than needing to go to hospital, from feeling a bit meh, to feeling absolutely dreadful for a few days.

godmum56 · 15/12/2021 21:43

@visitingagain

I've had flu in my 20s. I was off work for four weeks. I tried to go back two weeks in and collapsed and was off for two more. That was a good few years ago- probably now would have been hospitalised.I was really healthy and outdoorsy.
yes me too. had it as a fit healthy teen and again as a fit healthy 40 ish year old.
brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr · 15/12/2021 21:43

A lot was about the UK as he was interviewing with Sky UK

vera99 · 15/12/2021 21:43

It's pretty clear to anybody who wants to listen as to what they are saying. In public health terms and the state of the hospital staffing, it's like an air raid warning but we are all too pissed or wish to ignore the alarm as it's nearly Christmas and we've had 2 long bloody years of this crap.

Rocket1982 · 15/12/2021 21:44

It obviously would NOT be a good idea for health care workers to go to work while infected, not because of any risk to themselves, but to the sick, elderly and vulnerable people they are treating (the people most vulnerable to covid in society are in hospital). The severe illness/death rate would have to be the same as the common cold, and omicron is a long way from that.

CoffeeMuggins · 15/12/2021 21:44

@nevergoesaway

I know how you feel! Getting on mumsnet is like stepping into some alternate universe where the pandemic is over. All the Christmas events are still on, it's cool to see 82 year old grandma 2 nights after the big work Christmas bash and masks on the bus? Who needs 'em!

PokemonGoGoGo · 15/12/2021 21:45

Currently Omicron cases are doubling every 2 days (it's more like 1.7 but let's go with 2). Today they reported 10,000 omicron cases (some were from yesterday, but let's go with 10,000).

At the same rate of infection, by the end of January, there will be 2.56 million cases of Omicron PER DAY.

That's why they are worried. Even if people are not as seriously ill, how on earth is life going to carry on with so many people affected at once, each isolating for 10 days? And of course some of those cases will be seriously ill and need hospital care. Hospitals will be over run with cases, there will be fewer staff to deal with them, and anyone attending hospital for ANYTHING will be affected.

flippertyop · 15/12/2021 21:46

I know literallly 40 people who have it at the moment it is spreading fast. All of them feel perfectly fine though so I'm not concerned about it. In fact from what I've seen I think it's a good one to get because you get antibodies with very mild symptoms.

And because the UK has been beyond reckless in the widespread reopening, abandoning of mask wearing & lifting restrictions on meeting / interacting.

In Ireland we're just horrified. It's a big problem here too, no doubt, but thankfully we had retained many of the restrictions so we could take a step back easier, and quicker.

dibdobs · 15/12/2021 21:47

He reminds me of someone, is it vince cable? He certainly doesn’t mince his words

Ginger1982 · 15/12/2021 21:47

I think the length of isolation needs to be looked at. In a vaccinated population, is 10 days too long?

yellowgreysocks · 15/12/2021 21:48

Absolutely. But if it's this or no staff - you know what they'll pick.

They did it in Italy with doctors - asymptomatic doctors had to work in FFP3s.

TreborBore · 15/12/2021 21:48

David Nabarro is being honest about what us known and not known. The NHS is at breaking point in my area without any added pressure from Omicron

This is so uninformed it's unreal.

If you've listened to any interviews with public health experts, they've all said they don't know yet how mild or otherwise it is. It's simply too soon to tell.

The doctor who identified the new strain in S Africa observed young children with the variant more adversely affected than had previously been the case with previous variants.

vera99 · 15/12/2021 21:50

In essence, what Dr Nabbaro was warning about is basically loads of folk are going to die at home as ambulances don't come and even if they can come there will be chaos in the hospitals overrun with sick people and insufficient staff to cope. It's a totally bleak message for Christmas but one they want us to hear as every little bit of mitigation helps. But many here are done with that sort of thing so what will be will be.

nordica · 15/12/2021 21:51

He sounds like my therapist trying to get me to listen to something I don't want to hear (which is what I pay him for really - to make me think about all those uncomfortable truths!). I think that's quite apt really - of course we don't want to hear it but it is not said to scare us, it is said because we need to hear it.

Allycott · 15/12/2021 21:51

@onewayandday

What video
Yeah what video?
Delatron · 15/12/2021 21:52

That’s what I’m hoping @flippertyop

I have it at the moment (suspect it’s omicron) feel fine. I know another 10 who also feel ok. Worst symptoms are heavy cold. Will we all get a good antibody boost from this without being that ill?

Friends who had Delta a month ago felt Rooney for weeks.

Maybe the isolation period need to be looked at. Maybe after 5 days the risk of spreading it around reduces, especially if you have zero symptoms.

I had flu about 7 years ago and I was ill for a month and didn’t feel 100% for another few months. Should have been called ‘long flu’ .

Delatron · 15/12/2021 21:52

Felt Rooney 🤣! Ropey!

doublemonkey · 15/12/2021 21:53

Seriously, this shit makes no sense. Do the vaccines provide no immunity whatsoever? Does previous Covid provide no immunity?

This is bullshit.

Wrongkindofovercoat · 15/12/2021 21:53

Up until fairly recently, NHS staff were provided with LFT's, we are now being told to get them through the normal civilian channels, which is proving difficult at the moment for obvious reasons.

vera99 · 15/12/2021 21:53
EvilShmeevil · 15/12/2021 21:53

Omicron will be eight times more serious in one week. Forty times more serious in two weeks. Three hundred or four hundred times more serious in three weeks. Over a thousand times more serious in four weeks.'

Those figures are scary.

If Omicron is only half as deadly as Delta which is causing 150 deaths per day at the moment, does that mean we could see 150/2=75 multiplied by 1000 times =75,000 deaths per day in 4 weeks time?

ChocolateDeficitDisorder · 15/12/2021 21:53

I agree. I can't actually believe that someone suggested that. I wonder if it occurred to them that most patients in a hospital are not fit and healthy and only in hospital for a quick procedure - many are chronically sick, very elderly and disabled - they're the long-term and/or frequent patients that staff spend most of their time with.

It would be murderous to work with these patients knowing that you're infectious with a respiratory virus. Nurses are not murderous.

visitingagain · 15/12/2021 21:57

@doublemonkey

This is bullshit.

I think that's one of the issues with the spike protein they've used for the vaccines - omicron attaches differently so it can get past initial immunity
