Independent sage: circuit breaker lockdown needed now

XmasGoose · 15/12/2021 18:01

I see Independent Sage have said that an immediate circuit breaker lockdown is needed to protect the NHS.

This would involve a total ban on household mixing, all bars, restaurants and indoor venues closing and schools shutting early for Christmas.

Is this needed now to protect the NHS and save lives? Personally I wouldn’t comply with another lockdown.

Today he stressed people should reduce to essential contacts only, (he includes emotional as essential), face masks, sd, open windows and get boosters.

TheKeatingFive · 15/12/2021 20:57

There was a 'save Christmas' lockdown in ROI before Christmas last year. Then everyone went bananas at Christmas to make up for their sacrifices and the next few months were a shit show.

ElectraBlue · 15/12/2021 20:58

The only people we should lock down are the members of Sage...

Delatron · 15/12/2021 20:58

What has history taught us? We need to build immunity to viruses. Locking ourselves away and hiding will not work. Constant exposure is the best plan now. Yes vaccine induced immunity will help and is absolutely necessary when faced with a novel virus. Even an initial lockdown.

How do we build immunity to colds as children? We expose ourselves over and over again and our bodies build up immunity over our lifetime.

Maybe Omicron will force our hand a bit with this.
But lockdowns are not the long term answer. Is having a booster every 6 months even the answer?
Considering they don’t stop you actually catching the disease.

We may need to accept that unless we all live like hermits we will be exposed to Covid over and over again and then very soon it will stop being such a problem. Especially if we stop all the isolation and testing.

Trixiefirecracker · 15/12/2021 21:00

@Delatron letting it rip through the population pushes further variants to mutate.

RuleWithAWoodenFoot · 15/12/2021 21:00

Lockdown is pointless for this one. It's like Cnut trying to hold back the tide.

More concerning is the fact that (even if it's mild) if there are the number of cases they say there are going to be, then there are going to be millions of people at a time out of circulation because of isolating. Forget the obvious issues of NHS staff, caring staff, school staff... who is going to be delivering food to those people stuck at home for 10 days? Who is going to be emptying the bins?

If it's blowing through the 20 - 29 and 30-39 age groups first, then it's going to run out of those folk in only a week or so. They are then out of circulation for 2 -4 weeks. It's then in other age groups.. who are also out of circulation for 2 - 4 weeks.

Interesting times.

WashWam · 15/12/2021 21:00

If this Christmas is anything like last year, a week or so after saw a tremendous spike in hospitalisations and then deaths.

I do intend to spend Christmas with family, but we will definitely be taking precautions to keep everyone as safe as possible.

Last year, my friend lost her dad following their Christmas Day get together. I don't think she would say it was worth it.

motheroftigers · 15/12/2021 21:01
@IWannaWishYouANutNutsChristmas yes we do get to say no to some of it. I will be saying no to any rules saying I can't socialise with family and friends. So there you go.
So will I. Not a chance! I will be three vaccinations in by then, I won't be following any lockdown

Zotter · 15/12/2021 21:02

Dr Nabarro today stressed people should reduce to essential contacts only, (said he includes emotional as essential), face masks, sd, open windows and get boosters.

Maybe it was a good idea I bought all that toilet roll after all

Del do you have any idea yet of how multiple reinfections from Omicron will look? Just curious because no one seems to know and yet so many seem hell bent on throwing caution to the wind when we really don’t understand what we’re dealing with.

I’m sceptical we can even build immunity to it especially as it keeps mutating.

So what do we do with 100s of extra corpses if it runs through the populace? Seriously

@Zotter

He can stress all he wants, makes no difference to me. I will wear a mask, get my booster but I'm not limiting my social contacts.
110APiccadilly · 15/12/2021 21:06

If at this point we're still needing to lockdown to save the NHS, then it's far too broken to be salvaged. Let's start having a sensible discussion about the best system to replace it with. I like the government backed insurance type scheme, like most of the western world has, myself.

But I'd rather have a US style system than another lockdown, and I speak as someone for whom that would be very expensive.

Zotter · 15/12/2021 21:07

Also Dr Nabarro today stressed people should reduce to essential contacts only, (said he includes emotional as essential) as well as face masks, sd, open windows and get boosters.

Delatron · 15/12/2021 21:10

No we don’t know @Thewiseoneincognito

I’m just sat here feeling fine two days after testing positive so admit I’m very biased.

Andecdotal but the party I went to where about 60% of us tested positive, the ones that escaped were the ones who had recently had Covid. The rest of us who were double and triple jabbed have had a mild illness so far. No idea if Omicron. No idea if this will protect from future illness.

I’m not sure we’re throwing caution to the wind. Just that we can’t go on like this for an illness that is mild for a huge percentage of the population. All because the NHS can’t cope.

Againstmachine · 15/12/2021 21:13

Del do you have any idea yet of how multiple reinfections from Omicron will look?

There is no evidence of multiple reinfections from omnicrom.

It's not like him to be so emphatic.

I bought private healthcare a couple of months ago. I'd rather "protect the NHS" by never using it again than carry on restricting my life.
ChequerBoard · 15/12/2021 21:24

"I bought private healthcare a couple of months ago. I'd rather "protect the NHS" by never using it again than carry on restricting my life"

That's great, if you need elective (planned care) that's fine. Where are you going to when you need emergency care? When you break your leg, have a car accident, appendicitis, a heart attack, a stroke?

Your private healthcare insurance isn't going to help you then. You'll be queuing at the doors of A&E with everyone else.

Marianne1234 · 15/12/2021 21:33

I am so, so fucking sick of being told what to do and how to live by the rich and famous who aren’t any good at following their own advice. Same with that COP26 bollocks. Back into your private jets and fuck off.

You can listen to him saying all that emphatically here

VikingOnTheFridge · 15/12/2021 21:37

@TheKeatingFive

We don't get to say no to It.

Actually we do

Yes, do people honestly not understand that a Christmas lockdown would be even less enforceable than the last one? We would need half the population in the police to stop the other half from mixing!
GoldenOmber · 15/12/2021 21:38

We would need half the population in the police to stop the other half from mixing!

I reckon my town Facebook group would be up for that.

worriedatthemoment · 15/12/2021 21:39

@BluebellsGreenbells don't think that will happen
