Independent sage: circuit breaker lockdown needed now

551 replies

XmasGoose · 15/12/2021 18:01

I see Independent Sage have said that an immediate circuit breaker lockdown is needed to protect the NHS.

This would involve a total ban on household mixing, all bars, restaurants and indoor venues closing and schools shutting early for Christmas.

Is this needed now to protect the NHS and save lives? Personally I wouldn’t comply with another lockdown.

@Beeinmybonnets

Independent Sage are fantastic. They are scientists, telling us what is going to happen, based on research, not based on made-up social media nonsense or Boris-politics. We might not want to hear it, but we should, if we want an even minimally functioning healthcare service this winter and to keep the elderly & vulnerable alive. We are too old to be having tantrums when we hear news we don't like the sound of.
They do not look at the wider picture.
Thewiseoneincognito · 15/12/2021 20:48

@DynamiteFilledRadish actually that part about lockdowns is also selective because he advocates for ‘better systems’ which ultimately means mass compliance in mandatory mask wearing, social distancing as the Norm in all settings and generally being more self aware.

Sadly those are virtues many of our fell Brits do not posses nor are interested in because they lack the mental fortitude to understand Covid does not care about them or what they deem as their ‘rights’, it will do as it pleases and governments have to get their populations to recognise this. They think him saying lockdowns don’t work means everything can carry on regardless, when that doesn’t work either and is definitely not the case.

Living with Covid untamed is impossible with the current health infrastructure we have. We must be open to making the necessary sacrifices ourselves otherwise we end up in a mess, like we are in now.

Keeping the elderly and vulnerable alive at the cost of everything else isn't something to be aiming for. Who will then pay for the care of those elderly and vulnerable? In years to come we'll be relying on young workers to pay their taxes, but they had their education and social skills ruined

I don't know what the answer is but it's not that.

@IWannaWishYouANutNutsChristmas

Those of you who are saying "Nope" to Independent Sage's plan to reduce transmission and still have a normal Christmas...

What would you do instead of a circuit breaker to reduce transmission and stave off the next lockdown?

Take up vaccination (by choice) as they are believed to significantly reduce hospitalisation and death therefore significantly reduce the risk to health services and exercise a bit of common sense.
MrsLargeEmbodied · 15/12/2021 20:49

i doubt independant sage called for lockdown

MarshaBradyo · 15/12/2021 20:50

"circuit breaker" doesn't do anything to prevent things, with a doubling time of 2 days, all it does is move things by the length of the lockdown and a half - so 2 week lockdown, we're in the same place in 3 weeks, so presumably then there would be another circuit breaker?

Exactly

IWannaWishYouANutNutsChristmas · 15/12/2021 20:50

@MarshaBradyo

For how long? And then when you lift it same scenario again
You're not interested in having Christmas Day?

If the lockdown starts on Christmas Eve that's fine with you?

AllThingsServeTheBeam · 15/12/2021 20:50

They can shut the pubs and restaurants but there is no way I am not seeing my family and friends again. Never ever.

Cuck00soup · 15/12/2021 20:51

Springrainbow

However, this will drive more people to mix again in private homes

I don't think this should be underestimated. Even if hospitality closes, people will mix, and are arguably more likely to get it from close family and friends due to the lack of masks and being in close proximity.

MarshaBradyo · 15/12/2021 20:52

I will be having Christmas Day regardless and no to any lockdown

But you are welcome to lockdown from now Wanna to get the day you want. I don’t really care what others do.

It's buys us Christmas.
Waxonwaxoff0 · 15/12/2021 20:53

What is this obsession about Christmas? It's just a day.

TheKeatingFive · 15/12/2021 20:53

Independent Sage are massive drama llamas.

Absofuckinglutely.

And when has a 'circuit breaker' ever achieved anything? Any I recall were pointless wastes of time.

It's not going to be up to us, is it?

We don't get to say no to It.

MarshaBradyo · 15/12/2021 20:53

‘buys us Christmas’

It also costs a huge amount and doesn’t do much for healthcare as in
same place soon after

HesterShaw1 · 15/12/2021 20:54

Absolutely!
TheKeatingFive · 15/12/2021 20:54

Who cares when it starts, a huge amount just won't comply.

TheKeatingFive · 15/12/2021 20:55

Actually we do

The whole ‘save Christmas’ is like last year. Too tabloid / click bait media for me,

Not very science based either

IWannaWishYouANutNutsChristmas · 15/12/2021 20:55

@Waxonwaxoff0

It's a giant super spreader event if transmission isn't brought down beforehand.
Againstmachine · 15/12/2021 20:55

Posh way of calling people thick if they don't agree with you.

IWannaWishYouANutNutsChristmas · 15/12/2021 20:55

We're a bit thin on alternative solutions....

Waxonwaxoff0 · 15/12/2021 20:56

@IWannaWishYouANutNutsChristmas yes we do get to say no to some of it. I will be saying no to any rules saying I can't socialise with family and friends. So there you go.

Trixiefirecracker · 15/12/2021 20:57

I’m sorry @HesterShaw1 but you don’t seem to grasp what a shitty situation we are in and will continue to be in. Lockdowns were not dealing with the effects of prior lockdowns, they were trying to manage variant upon variant appearing and omicron will not be the last. Each time we are in a very different boat and we can’t tweak the vaccines fast enough, so what we have left are social measures.

Isthisthereaklife · 15/12/2021 20:57

This time next week we’ll be locked down , no other choice
