Some things are better mixed with Gin & 🍫.

Joystir59 · 15/12/2021 13:11

Apparently Jenny Harries predicting 400,000 new cases today, and double that tomorrow!

Charles11 · 15/12/2021 13:11

I just want to swear at him. At all of them. So fed up of all this.

JuergenSchwarzwald · 15/12/2021 13:12

Just saw this on Twitter. Not sure what he's going to say this time. Just confirm the new measures, maybe.

Frazzled2207 · 15/12/2021 13:12

Sebastian Payne on Twitter says this. Don’t panic

🚨 NEW: Boris Johnson will host a Downing Street press conference at 5pm today to discuss omicron with Prof Chris Whitty.

Expecting an update on the booster programme, not new measures

TokyoSushi · 15/12/2021 13:13

5pm. I expect it'll just be the same as Scotland yesterday. Lot's of 'guidance.' The rates are going off the charts, have a think about limiting your social contact, make sure you get your booster, that sort of thing. No actual restrictions though.

Charles11 · 15/12/2021 13:13

Oh yes of course. More terrifying numbers so we all sit quivering in fear at home while they quaff champers at parties laughing at us all.

Nidan2Sandan · 15/12/2021 13:13

What more can there possibly be to say?.

What more could there possibly be to say on boosters?!
Fritilleries · 15/12/2021 13:14

What exactly is the concern as omicron results in mild symptoms, much like a cold?

CheesyFootballsAreEvil · 15/12/2021 13:14

Ah good, Chris Whitty

Lockheart · 15/12/2021 13:15

What more could there possibly be to say on boosters?!

An update on how they're improving capacity and how people can get one?

CheesyFootballsAreEvil · 15/12/2021 13:16

@Lockheart

Yeah that would be good. Also letting everyone know who is eligible to get one.
Lockheart · 15/12/2021 13:17

@Fritilleries

Not everyone will get it mildly. And if there are going to be hundreds of thousands of cases a day as projected then there will still be very high numbers of hospital admissions and deaths. A milder illness is still devastating to the health service if enough people have it.

Jesus. Surely can tell that if 0.5% of people get hospitalised but 20 million of us get it (that’s not the most pessimistic scenario) hospitals will literally not be able to treat everyone.

Even if people aren’t actively dying if half of the nhs workforce it at home poorly that’s pretty catastrophic if you get ill- with anything-in january

SirensofTitan · 15/12/2021 13:23

@Joystir59

I honestly have no idea if this is a joke
Lockheart · 15/12/2021 13:24

Imagine if there were 10,000 cases of delta and 1% of those (say) ended up in hospital. That's 100 people in hospital.

Now imagine that there are 200,000 cases of Omicron and only 0.5% of them end up in hospital. That's 1,000 people in hospital.

In this made-up example, Delta is twice as severe but less transmitted, so results in fewer hospitalisations.

Milder but more transmissible can easily mean more people in hospital.

kimlo · 15/12/2021 13:25

director of primary care is going to be there with Whitty. So something about gps.

NannaMcPhoo · 15/12/2021 13:25

They will not dare put in any restrictions before Christmas based on the crock of shit that happened last year and partygate.

It is likely a speech to explain the fuck up with the tests and vaccine bookings.

FreeBritnee · 15/12/2021 13:30

I’m not going to watch anymore of these press conferences. It’s too ‘end of the world for me! I’ll just catch up on here 🥴

smashingbaubles · 15/12/2021 13:33

@SirensofTitan I don't think it is - I've read those numbers too.

basically, yes

If they are true you'd think we will very quickly reach the point where everyone has had it. Does that mean it will have burnt itself out?
