I know it’s shit guys but come on. I’m sat here with a child with a positive lft and waiting on PCR results.
Xmas is ruined if the PCR is positive. We really needed a decent Christmas after so many family loses recently.

I’m so absolutely furious that Christmas for many children will be ruined when their families have taken every precaution they can.

the80sweregreat · 15/12/2021 14:32

They should shut the schools tomorrow
I know people don't like it, but what is the point of one more day ?
I know they won't though

toomuchlaundry · 15/12/2021 14:32

@tootyfruitypickle I was planning on getting a box of mulled wine, I have a feeling it won't last to Christmas Day!

Happypootler · 15/12/2021 14:33

I would prefer some further restrictions before Christmas but since this opens them up to allegations of complete hypocrisy, they are clearly intent on dialing up the fear factor to the max again instead. People then self police because they are terrified and the measures aren't required to be enforced. I find it a sickening approach.

nordica · 15/12/2021 14:34

@toomuchlaundry

Many people on here broke the rules last Christmas, or made up spurious bubbles so they could mix with various households.

If the situation is looking dire I won't risk family health just to stick two fingers up at the Government

Absolutely this!

I keep seeing people say "I won't have a booster or take tests before seeing my family because I no longer care what the government wants me to do" - they are rather missing the point though as nothing we're being asked to do actually benefits the government.

annie55 · 15/12/2021 14:34

@BigButtons

What's the bloody point when you can still stand in a pub with no mask, mix with whomever you want. Stupid half arsed measures won't make any difference.
Let's do lockdown again! They don't work but furlough was fun! How people dare to go to the pubs and actually enjoy themselves...
Lipsandlashes · 15/12/2021 14:35

A milder illness is still devastating to the health service if enough people have it.
How so? Do you regularly bother your GP or A&E with a cold or even flu? I know I certainly don't!

Pootle40 · 15/12/2021 14:37

@the80sweregreat

4 more days here thanks
AutumnAlmanack · 15/12/2021 14:38

To think it's only a few days since we first even heard the word 'omicron'. It's a pretty scary thing when you think a humble virus is able to replicate itself so incredibly quickly.

toomuchlaundry · 15/12/2021 14:40

@Lipsandlashes if a large amount of people working in NHS etc get it, it will be a nightmare from a staffing perspective. And as others have said if a greater number of people get it, and there will always be some who will get poorly with it even if mild for the majority, that will put a strain on the health service too

Incognito22333 · 15/12/2021 14:40

I think they are missing a trick. A lot if people with Covid just need some steroids, antibiotics and a bit of oxygen. If this could be delivered quickly and easily early on in eg GP practices might make a big difference.

jimmyhill · 15/12/2021 14:40

How can people actually be this dense?

Before COVID flu was the number one winter pressure. People bothered their GPs from it, and they bothered wards and critical care and ICUs with it, and then they bothered mortuaries and funeral directors with it.

And COVID is more infectious and more lethal than flu.

So, that's "how so".

Staryflight445 · 15/12/2021 14:41

Antibiotics? For a virus? @Incognito22333

time4anothername · 15/12/2021 14:41

Why oh why do they mix up opportunities to convey important public health information and advice with political press conferences, it's an incredibly stupid way to convey important information and actually dangerous now as the important information will be lost in a sea of questioning about parties etc.

Incognito22333 · 15/12/2021 14:42

Yes @Staryflight445- because secondary bacterial infection can occur frequently. Have been administered in Germany since Day 1 pretty much.

time4anothername · 15/12/2021 14:43

@Staryflight445

Antibiotics? For a virus? *@Incognito22333*
well yes actually, the more ill people often get an opportunistic bacterial pneuomonia or other infection alongside. Happened to me when I got flu that an opportunistic bacterial tonsilitis slid in there too.
the80sweregreat · 15/12/2021 14:44

The government employees etc shot them selves in the foot by not following the rules last year ..

The person leaking the photos and the video of Allegra at the practice briefing etc actually has had a lot to answer for from a public health perspective , especially if the public don't follow any rules and January is carnage because people are mixing at Christmas and nobody will follow the any further restrictions that may be brought in.

I'm not saying they should not be allowed to tell us things, but when you think of the damage this could cause down the line , I'm beginning to think it was , maybe , a rather foolish thing to do ( although they didn't know that Omnicron would be as bad maybe ?)
It has caused a backlash though and nobody will listen now :(
It's been a domino effect and not a good one.

Incognito22333 · 15/12/2021 14:45

And on that point over 65s are meant to have had their pneumonia vaccine- again many haven’t nor even know about it especially in the last 2 years. Every year hospitals so full with pneumonia cases.

Motorina · 15/12/2021 14:49

@jimmyhill exactly so.

It's right to say flu is typically no bother for anyone young and healthy. But if you're otherwise young and healthy, and you need postponable surgery, and you need it in January to March.... Then winter flu season is going to bother you a great deal even in a normal year because, odds on, your surgery will be cancelled because the hospitals are full of people with flu.

Just flu. Something most people don't bother their doctor's with. Huge disruption. Because of the pressure of the small percentage who get very ill indeed.

The worry is this will be orders of magnitude worse.

ancientgran · 15/12/2021 14:50

@Lockheart

What more could there possibly be to say on boosters?!

An update on how they're improving capacity and how people can get one?

Well listening to PMQs today all he wants to talk about is boosters. It's all waffle waffle waffle boosters waffle vaccine waffle waffle playing politics waffle waffle boosters.
WineGetsMeThroughIt · 15/12/2021 14:51

I'm so fed up with all this now. I suspect the press conference will be Boris giving himself a big pat on the back for the most successful day of jabs ever and for having the most successful booster programme of almost any country.

A booster for a variant that is the equivalent of a cold for most people.

I have watched the news for the past few days. They have had SA doctors And scientists confirming that the variant is much more mild than delta and that the UK and Boris are completely overreacting.

3 years ago would you have cancelled your plans because you had a cold? Unlikely.

Just watch Boris and the government continue to praise themselves when the hospital admissions do not go up like they're predicting. They will chalk that up to a successful booster programme and not the fact that the variant was so mild in the first place. Meanwhile, they'll continue to move the goal post. You're not fully vaccinated until you have your 3rd jab. Meanwhile Pfizer are developing a jab to tackle the Omicron variant which they say will be available in the next 6 months. By that time we'll have all had Omicron anyways, but we will face yet another booster drive, eventually moving the goalposts post again to say you're not fully vaccinated until you get the 4th jab.

Madness. This is seriously so depressing now. I'm done with covid and the jabs.

ivykaty44 · 15/12/2021 14:52

perhaps we are going to all get an invite to the number 10 xmas party next week....

ancientgran · 15/12/2021 14:54

Yes one of my kids is a nurse, apparently the ones who haven't got covid are doing loads of overtime to cover for shortages. This is how it was last year.

TwittleBee · 15/12/2021 14:54

I can't help but think the photos were leaked on purpose so now public opinion is that they won't be sticking to any measures so either the Gov can say they're following public opinion by not putting any stricter measures in place or if they do put them in place and it doesn't work they can blame the public.

PestoSugarPlumFairy · 15/12/2021 14:54

@FreeBritnee

I’m not going to watch anymore of these press conferences. It’s too ‘end of the world for me! I’ll just catch up on here 🥴

Tbf it's not much different with all the lockdown lovers and theatrics on here.
