Will London be locked down before Christmas?

Could Londoners be locked down again this Christmas? How likely do people think this is? I’m dreading having to spend another Christmas without my family and am considering leaving early to avoid another lockdown.

Will they declare a lockdown - possibly. Will anyone follow what they have to say after the way they've all behaved over the past year? Nope.

julieca · 14/12/2021 00:44

@Skiptheheartsandflowers obviously nobody knows, not even Boris. We are simply chatting about it and giving our own views.

Except...if they close hospitality, non-essential retail and leisure activities, people won’t have any choice other than to comply will they?

@tootyfruitypickle

I've never seen so many people wearing masks outside as I did today on the high street. People are scared and for most people there's no need. Insanity .
Regrettably my local wetherspoons was HEAVING with no masks.

I won't be following another lockdown, no. And if you have vulnerable relatives that you were going to see this Xmas, then do it. How long is this going to go on for? We're all jabbed, and yet we still have to isolate etc? How long are you going to go on for, not seeing those relatives just because a buffoon who hasn't got a clue says you can't?

NightOwlWoes · 14/12/2021 01:52

If there is a lockdown, it won't be London specific.

Pupils in Denbighshire, Angelsey and Wrexham are returning to home schooling from Friday .....I think it's a high possibility many other counties in Wales will follow suit

My grandsons school are preparing parents that school may not be opening in January. My neighbour said the same about the school her children attend. That’s two primary schools in South Wales.

If I’ve heard of two different schools that may not reopen after Christmas schools must have had notification of possible forthcoming restrictions from The Senedd.

Why would people be wearing masks when sat in a pub though?

VanillaIce1 · 14/12/2021 02:09

@RoseRedRoseBlue Not really they'll just find other things to do

Grayskelly · 14/12/2021 05:18

The strategy of choice is now vaccines, not lockdowns.
When that starts to falter it will be more vaccines. Boosters will be included in the vaccine passport requirements, which will also be expanded to include more venues and possibly younger ages.

That's the way it goes in Australia. In most states you cannot work in most jobs without a vaccine passport (maybe some WFH office jobs and some public service, but that's it).

Depending on the state, you cannot really go anywhere either, except the supermarket or pharmacy, and they're looking at cracking down on that too.
I expect that's the way it will go everywhere.

KatherineJaneway · 14/12/2021 05:39

No there won't be a lockdown before or over Christmas imo. Number 10 know this would not go over well. They'll do all they can to avoid it.

We have been told that there is no news on us shutting before or after Christmas. South Wales secondary

On December 7th Sajid Javid was advised that stringent national measures were needed within 7 days.

Teenagetrouble · 14/12/2021 06:37

So in the above - we are past most of those dates so are things better than anticipated here?

ginnig · 14/12/2021 06:42

Doesn't it depend on fear though in some part? If people think we are all going to die they then to be more compliant by default.

UnmentionedElephantDildo · 14/12/2021 06:44

@Smallkeys

Hmm well sounds like no one in the commons wants to support any restrictions.
That was about 50 Tory rebels (not a majority-threatening number)

The rest of the tories and all of Starmer's Labour are supporting it.

The rebels are getting a lot of airtime though.

ginnig · 14/12/2021 06:45

after all look at the rush by the public to get their boosters & people cancelling xmas parties & plans etc

TheReluctantPhoenix · 14/12/2021 06:45

Not going to happen.

Effective lockdown for unvaccinated adults-maybe.

Even if total cases double, hospitals will still be fine.

Possible lockdown in the new year, though but, even then, some form of lockdown-lite.

ginnig · 14/12/2021 06:46

When do those schools break up for xmas, surely it's soon?

UnmentionedElephantDildo · 14/12/2021 06:48

If hospitals fill, or ICU beds do, that halts so much other work for the NHS, so deaths from all causes will rise and life will be pretty miserable.

There may be a need for more measures once that becomes apparent.

But right now, it's still very early days whilst we watch to see what sort of disease pattern omicron produces. As said all along, this takes a few weeks.

Remmy123 · 14/12/2021 06:50

No

They break up next Wednesday so will have 3 days online learning next week 20-22nd December.

Haven't checked all of them, but google says Denbighshire 23 December

So if they do stop imminently, they are taking a week off term (but cases transmitted in the last days they are there will still halt Cristmas plans for those affected)

MrsLargeEmbodied · 14/12/2021 06:55

my dd is coming home from uni, whatever anyone says.

MrsLargeEmbodied · 14/12/2021 06:58

i lost 3 acquaintances in october, prematurely, in their 60s,
not covid
but what a waste - a year of lockdown, and then what?
