Will London be locked down before Christmas?

Could Londoners be locked down again this Christmas? How likely do people think this is? I’m dreading having to spend another Christmas without my family and am considering leaving early to avoid another lockdown.

They have achieved a lockdown of sorts by fear. The behavioural scientists have been working overtime during the pandemic. It works! Mask-wearing is now 100% round here and people seem hesitant about going out and quite miserably resigned to any imminent restrictions.

SparrowNest · 14/12/2021 09:08

I really fucking hope not.

borntobequiet · 14/12/2021 09:12

@SlimeYuleBall

They break up next Wednesday so will have 3 days online learning next week 20-22nd December. What a shame, poor children.
A god opportunity to test the resources and identify access problems. What do you think will happen in January?
Claudethecat · 14/12/2021 09:13

It does seem that we are being nudged to self imposed lockdowns, that way no money needs to be spent on furlough etc.

I just want some reliable sensible information so I can assess what and what not to do.

Claudethecat · 14/12/2021 09:15

But maybe it is still too early for anyone to know how this will all pan out?

Dateloaf · 14/12/2021 09:16

I think they won’t lock down London. It’s too financially and politically impactful. Boris just won’t want to, pretty much however bad it gets. London is first in and first out of everything significant due to the concentration of population. They’ll let the virus go through London then only when the NHS in the rest of the country is significantly affected they will consider acting I think.

Quartz2208 · 14/12/2021 09:18

It is definitely still too early and that is the crux of the issue. It has the potential to be really really bad but also has the potential to be mild and cause few issues with the reality likely to be somewhere between the two.

At the moment even Sajid Javid is working off modelling numbers rather than actual numbers and data on how it works with vaccinated and previously infected people is still unknown.

So everyone is pretty much in the dark about this - at the moment the preparations seem to be for worst case

User983756 · 14/12/2021 09:19

Just talk of plan C which is not lockdown and will mainly affect hospitality

User983756 · 14/12/2021 09:20

London will probably be ok anyway, if it was Manchester or Leicester though...

Tilltheend99 · 14/12/2021 09:20

@NoNameHere12

Hahah no chance, January however, yes! Locked down until June 2022 probably 😞
This is interesting. A likely scenario.

If Christmas is cancelled BoJo won’t tell us until everyone has spent and bought enough. They want the spending levels then will cancel the mixing like last year

MarshaBradyo · 14/12/2021 09:21

I doubt it. We’re still on plan b voting

Booster and big numbers I reckon will be tolerated first

Yeah, it’s odd infection levels are as bad as last January but we are all being left to our own devices with very little guidance or information.

Even less tv briefings. Considering the room cost x millions they might as well get use out of it.

CountryCob · 14/12/2021 09:26

I am much more concerned about potential school closures. Whilst there are still pupils who are coping the first year university intake which missed A levels are the hardest I have ever taught in terms of ability to pay attention and behave in class in a way which does not make them look bad. They have missed so much in terms of their advance education. There comes a point when students who miss most of GCSE and A Levels cannot be expected to enter at degree level effectively and I fear the same is true of my primary school child who is off school again but I can’t see it as I don’t know what is normal. The damage to education and other aspects of live in the long term is worrying me more than a seasonal event although I do understand than missing family is difficult and it’s depressing. There are family members abroad I haven’t seen since Covid started who are getting old and slipping away as the time passes.

BigSandyBalls2015 · 14/12/2021 09:30

Do you think anyone would actually take any notice of further restrictions? I certainly wouldn't.

MarshaBradyo · 14/12/2021 09:38

People wouldn’t adhere this time, many anyway

Plus doing something for one city means people just leave taking Covid with them

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 14/12/2021 09:38

I wouldn’t bet on it.
But even if it is, then as long as we’ve all tested negative, we’ll be going to dd’s in Oxford on Christmas Day anyway.

cheninblanc · 14/12/2021 09:42

Countycob totally agree, my dd missed gcses in 2020 now if there's school disruption how will she manage at degree level. She works in hospitality too so the whole thing would massively impact her

BigSandyBalls2015 · 14/12/2021 09:46

We will never again see the same level of compliance as during the first lockdown. It's all gone on too long and people aren't as scared as they were in March 2020.

SpiderinaWingMirror · 14/12/2021 09:52

Well.
Literally all of my very law abiding friends have decided that Christmas is going ahead regardless. Bozo has lost on that one.
Fuck knows about January.

CBroads · 14/12/2021 09:53

I hope so, then the southerner's will know us northerner's felt when they could do as they please while we had full restrictions. Karma.

Nice.

We’ve had harsher restrictions at times in London.

But mostly people have realised lockdown by area is pointless or worse. So you won’t get your wish.

NOTANUM · 14/12/2021 10:10

The issue in London is that too many people have stopped caring. I see people not wearing masks everywhere - in cafes, shops, on public transport - and that includes the STAFF in Pret, Costa and major supermarkets. Anecdotally from the people I know personally, there is a large crossover between those who won't wear masks and those who are unvaccinated.

I don't think London should see population wide restrictions while the rate of vaccination is in the 50-60% range in some London postcodes. Let's focus on that issue first before closing down the schools.

Quartz2208 · 14/12/2021 10:10

Whatever happens it will be all or nothing. Local tiers was ridiculous! I live on the border of London and I could go to a coffee shop in my non London area but my DD couldnt after school in the coffee shop in London 15 mins from our house.

So everyone would drive to the coffee shop in the non London area

TooManyPlatesInMotion · 14/12/2021 10:14

@jourdain11 is surely taking the piss.

keysonthetable · 14/12/2021 10:33

10/12/2021 · At the conclusion of business on Thursday 16 December, the House will rise for the Christmas recess and return on Wednesday 5th January.

Based on previous form, they'll give themselves time to get away to their holiday homes/places in the country or wherever they were planning on spending the Christmas break before any lockdown.

So, if it were to happen and it is only "if" to my mind, don't expect it to be before next weekend.
