Will London be locked down before Christmas?

endoftether4 · 13/12/2021 22:03

Could Londoners be locked down again this Christmas? How likely do people think this is? I’m dreading having to spend another Christmas without my family and am considering leaving early to avoid another lockdown.

Just seems odd that if you are going to switch to remote learning you wait until the last few days of term & tbh how much actual learning happens in school in those last few days before xmas.

speakout · 14/12/2021 07:00

No.
There will be cicil unrest if a lckdown is imposed now so close to christmas.
It would probaby be the safest thing to do from a health point of view, but people have been living with this for two years and patience is wearing thin.
And given the way that the government has been shown to ignore its own rules then I think we would see mass disobedience, protests, violence in the streets.
Omicron will hit us hard and I do see a lockdown, but will be January, not before christmas.

Pixxie7 · 14/12/2021 07:01

I think that they will allow families to celebrate Christmas and possibly lockdown immediately after. I hope I am wrong.

ginnig · 14/12/2021 07:01

They break up next Wednesday so will have 3 days online learning next week 20-22nd December.

I don't understand the point, why not switch now if that's what you think is right? Do they schools really have a full day of lessons in those last few days? The schools I've worked in/attended always finish early on the last day, put on plays & watch films etc. it's normally more relaxed.

I think it's unpredictable. If lots of people are scared they tend to comply. I had my xmas party canx last week & 2 group meals this week so it's happening by default if that makes sense.

the tory backbenchers are voting against covid passports,
they are not going to allow lockdown

BarbaraofSeville · 14/12/2021 07:14

It probably is the case that they should tighten restrictions, maybe not a full lockdown, but more than is in place right now, but they know that it would be very unpopular to 'cancel Christmas' again, and hit the hospitality industry hard, at one of it's most lucrative times of year, so a bad move politically.

Lets hope that it doesn't go so bad that January etc will be really really bad.

Ivalueloyaltyaboveallelse · 14/12/2021 07:21

I don’t believe we will ever go back into a complete lockdown, but there will be restrictions on those who are not jabbed out of choice. Schools will never complete shut down again (excluding normal holidays) however they may alternate different year groups doing a couple of days of working from home. I highly doubt this will be primary aged school children after Arthur. I believe year group bubbles will be back and that most known vulnerable children in secondary will still be able to/enforced to attend school after the holidays. Most of the children in our area break up on Thursday or Friday anyway this week.

I do think they may close business down again tho in an attempt to control covid if death rates rise and the NHS is completely unable to cope. Face masks and working from home are already back but I think so could the 2m distancing be enforced again. Of course these are just my thoughts, I’ve no insight at all but like most will be monitoring this closely.

What a shame, poor children.

Unfortunately the tory backbenchers won't stop a lockdown, Labour would prefer the government to go further and lockdown sooner and harder so they will vote for it.

BritinDelco
I left yesterday sp as not to risk it and know of others doing the same

Is that a piss take?

@HolidayTime2021 why would that be a piss take? Confused

MrsLargeEmbodied · 14/12/2021 07:39

Why is this emphasis on London?

ginnig · 14/12/2021 07:40

Perhaps that's where the op lives?

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 14/12/2021 07:40

Except...if they close hospitality, non-essential retail and leisure activities, people won’t have any choice other than to comply will they?

They can still see family and friends, leave the house as many times a day as they want etc.

Quartz2208 · 14/12/2021 07:49

London is the current epi centre of Covid cases to be fair

JinglingHellsBells · 14/12/2021 07:50

No one will obey lockdown again.

There were enough posters here last year flouting the rules.

MrsLargeEmbodied · 14/12/2021 07:58

london does not have more cases

MrsLargeEmbodied · 14/12/2021 08:00

or does it?

CaveMum · 14/12/2021 08:03

If they’re going to lockdown they’d need to do it now to be frank. They said on the news last night there are are an estimated 200,000 Omicron cases active in the UK (scientific data based on previous waves and the rate of positive tests versus actual infection in the community) and they’re doubling every 2 days. By that projection, with no immediate action, there will be over 12,000,000 cases by Christmas Day.

Those numbers tell me they’ve no intention of full lockdown, they’d have done it by now.

AliceA2021 · 14/12/2021 08:26

The way they are talking about the tsunami of cases coming the language speaks of lockdown and closed borders with people unable to come home/go out/etc etc. Seems strange especially since evidence suggests mild for most.

Anjo2011 · 14/12/2021 08:36

They need to stop plane loads of people entering the country that are not residents of the UK. I fully supported the previous lockdowns and have had my vaccines ( and still contracted covid). We cannot keep locking ourselves away, I 100% do not support a new lockdown, that's what it looks like all these restrictions are pointing to. No point in introducing vaccine passports for just some venues , either do it or don’t.

I read that figure and felt panicked tbh! But the Guardian has said

"A UKHSA spokesperson said Javid was “referring to the number of new infections today [13 December] based on modelling, not the number who are currently infected."

So I am really not sure how seriously to take that figure? It seems a bit on the scaremongering side to me, and I am not usually one to say that.

Agree, the language being used is designed to strike fear.
BaconAndAvocado · 14/12/2021 08:52

DS2, at secondary school, told me yesterday that one of his teachers said the students would be going back in January in a staggered way, year group by year group.

HesterShaw1 · 14/12/2021 08:59

There's now clearly enough nudging and scaremongering going on to make people believe it's a possibility.

And clearly it's working.

For fuck's sake.
