Will London be locked down before Christmas?

Could Londoners be locked down again this Christmas? How likely do people think this is? I’m dreading having to spend another Christmas without my family and am considering leaving early to avoid another lockdown.

Has it? I did think demand by employers has shot up recently and supply was an issue.

The alternative I guess is high numbers

Kjcf · 14/12/2021 23:33

Christ some people really do overreact! For most people infection will be mild. It’s the ridiculous overtesting that’s causing the problem. Stop the testing!

ginnig · 14/12/2021 23:39

Yes (report in the Evening Standard) we have that lovely combo of high unemployment but a skills shortage; lack of investment, lower migration etc. I believe hospitality has record job vacancies but it's so insecure & not well paid that they can't fill the jobs unsurprisingly. I was listening to LBC recently & they had a few hospitality workers who had switched to a supermarket or Amazon job & someone became a HGV driver.

The alternative I guess is high numbers

and that's the conundrum, what impact will have high numbers have on the economy & population health.

RedToothBrush · 14/12/2021 23:51

@ginnig

Its a worry but what's the alternative? I was reading that youth unemployment in London "has soared by 55 per cent to 105,000 since the start of the pandemic with more than 21 per cent of young people jobless and seeking work,"

Plus high house prices they are going to have very tough futures.

Talk of raising the state pension age to 68 is circulating too.

Err ok. Thanks for your contribution.

@RedToothBrush is that sarcasm?

julieca · 15/12/2021 00:03

I will just end up long term sick. No way can I work full time till 68.

No. Deadly serious. Will affect people in mid 40s and younger if they manage to go ahead with the proposal.

I'm not in the slightest bit surprised unfortunately.

ginnig · 15/12/2021 00:15

But It's already 68 for people born after 77 & I expect it to increase.

ginnig · 15/12/2021 00:17

I assumed it had changed to 68 as that's what the gov site tells me my state pension age is.

julieca · 15/12/2021 00:20

Yes you are right, it has already changed.

julieca · 15/12/2021 00:22

@ginnig It might increase. But younger people don't realise what it feels like being in your sixties and working full time. 68 is old when average life expectancy for men is 79 and many already have health problems by 68.
Workplaces rightly expect people to work hard.

ginnig · 15/12/2021 00:25

I'm sure they do realise but don't really have a choice. It's not like private schemes are anywhere near as good as they once were. Going off topic but if I was young I would look for opportunities abroad as i think the burden on them is way to high & there isn't enough of them.

julieca · 15/12/2021 00:34

Lots of us older people lost money in pension schemes. There used to be no protection. Maxwell was the famous one, but other employers spent the pension funds as well.

MarshaBradyo · 15/12/2021 06:30

These hardships will increase

It annoys me they will fall disproportionately on the young due to our decisions now though - mostly not to benefit them.

trickytrudy · 15/12/2021 06:31

@Sparklingbrook

I can't understand all the 'will there be a lockdown?' threads. As if posters on a parenting website will somehow know. Confused What's the point?
This.
ginnig · 15/12/2021 07:25

@julieca of course but nonetheless overall pension schemes are not as good as they once were.

I just read that they are looking at bringing the age of 68 forward for some people which might be what red was referring too.

ginnig · 15/12/2021 07:25

@MarshaBradyo I agree

UntilBubleSings · 15/12/2021 07:28

Get the boy band Blue in. They got the city on lockdown

System up with the top down for proper ventilation? Wink
RedToothBrush · 15/12/2021 08:52

Boy bands always have proper ventilation in their videos.

Wind machines for the win.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 15/12/2021 10:15

Why would it be London? In general we’re not even amongst the highest rate areas - loads have higher rates than London

ThePix · 15/12/2021 17:27

Wow. Lots of deleted by mumsnet posts!!!!!!

maddening · 15/12/2021 17:31

The lockdowns have been against the backdrop of massively increasing death rates, when they get to around 400 per day - I reckon that is when the public start calling for it and then complain it was not soon enough....
