Will London be locked down before Christmas?

endoftether4 · 13/12/2021 22:03

Could Londoners be locked down again this Christmas? How likely do people think this is? I’m dreading having to spend another Christmas without my family and am considering leaving early to avoid another lockdown.

@Quartz2208 for political questions, yougov selects people using demographic information to try and get a representative sample.

Sparklingbrook · 14/12/2021 22:13

If people do YouGov surveys like I used to do mine then I wouldn't take too much notice of them.

VikingOnTheFridge · 14/12/2021 22:14

The problem is that some groups are much harder to reach than others and less likely to engage. That actually matters less with voting intentions, because those people are also less likely to vote. So you can ignore eg undocumented people in your political polling and it not make any difference to accuracy. But for something like attitude to restrictions, where the attitude of everyone in society is relevant, it matters more.

@Thewiseoneincognito

LOL 😂 you’re telling me the Anti-Maskers, Anti-Vaxxers, Anti-Lockdowners, and Anti-Restrictions brigade aren’t all over the YouGov polls like a rash?

They’re certainly all over the Covid Twitter comments and on here, so I don’t see how they’d let YouGov slip by.

Of course people are anti lockdown? Why would anyone be pro lockdown? Are you?

I mean I do admit I do hate it now. It used to be such a good way of earning money and then it just changed. So I am biased against it!

Princess what can you do with Omicron - there is no other country to look at to see how it works.

And the biggest thing the have to decide is what to do about isolation.

But yes it is clear that there is so much political manoeuvring going on

Smallkeys · 14/12/2021 22:19

I wonder why so close to winter and flu season that they decided it was a great idea to have a bunch of people from all over the world arrive en masse for cop 26 !!

RedToothBrush · 14/12/2021 22:22

What I think about lockdowns is irrelevant.

The Tory Party has a major issue over them now. Johnson might want one. He can't get one, unless he relies on Labour and their position on this isn't clear at this point (which is interesting in itself). If he does go for one with the help of Labour, he will face a Tory Leadership contest and judging by the numbers tonight I think thats a contest he can't win. He would be a lame duck PM until the contest unless he hands over to an interim PM. Raab is currently the Deputy PM so he would probably fill that role. So he would then be Acting PM over a massive crisis. He is to the Right of the Party so I can't see him being pro-lockdown either. He is unlikely to be ultimately replaced by anyone who will go for lockdowns.

Even Nicola hasn't gone for a lockdown though either.

The truth is, we are going to get a pile of problems relating to staffing way before Boris's predicament is resolved. Which will result in things being shutdown before the politicians do anything.

So rough ride ahead. Lots of closures and heartache and stress thats for sure. I am not looking forward. You probably are wise to buckle up, and baton down the hatches if you possibly can.

Smallkeys · 14/12/2021 22:24

Nicola didn’t go for any lock down style restrictions as she has no access to furlough money etc she hinted she very much would have liked to have gone further

She pretty much said as much didn't she?
vera99 · 14/12/2021 22:33

Oh and let's not forget the Brexit petrol on the fire. Huge staff shortages all over the spectrum. Utter fucking cunts.

Smallkeys · 14/12/2021 22:33

Yes that’s what I took from her speech it seemed she wanted to do more hospitality restricting.

Thewiseoneincognito · 14/12/2021 22:36

@HesterShaw1 I think you know exactly what I mean, Anti lockdown protesters, those idiots who think it’s all a scam and a conspiracy. They’ll be all over a YouGov poll

Agreed. Lockdown by proxy without the government support -so things will get wild rather quickly unless they see sense and intervene.

It will be interesting to see how long they hold their nerve if hospitalisations get very high. It’s all well and good being politically against restrictions but if your electorate start getting seriously ill and deaths creep up there’s only so much posturing and delaying you can reasonably get away with before you look like a psychopathic maniac or have to accept defeat.

MarshaBradyo · 14/12/2021 22:42

Actually I’m not sure they would

FB maybe and protests but YouGov probably not

Each thing is attractive or not to various groups

Thewiseoneincognito · 14/12/2021 23:08

Interesting to see the IMF have stepped in to suggest Furlough be brought back if needed as we start to head into restrictions- at least they’re concerned about the potential effects of not offering financial support to those most in need.

Hopefully Rishi is drafting the scheme as we speak…

ginnig · 14/12/2021 23:10

furlough made sense & Im not sure how you can have any lockdown without it. If thousands of people can't go to work they are unlikely to comply with a lockdown & you would likely get civil unrest.

ginnig · 14/12/2021 23:11

which doesn't help reduce the spread of a virus

MarshaBradyo · 14/12/2021 23:12

What’s the IMF thing?

Have they offered to pay

ginnig · 14/12/2021 23:16

From the Times

"Businesses will be supported with new state funding, including a potential return to furlough, if Boris Johnson orders further lockdown restrictions to tackle the Omicron variant, The Times understands.
It has been told that Rishi Sunak will increase the Treasury’s business support package again if pubs, bars and restaurants are ordered to close. Senior government sources said it was too early to say whether such measures might be necessary but that officials were working on a range of options."

Thewiseoneincognito · 14/12/2021 23:17

They’re not offering to pay they’re saying the government must bring it back if we need to close down various Industries. It’s a step in the right direction, to take tackling Omicron seriously and not be afraid of economic pressures if Furlough is required

news.sky.com/story/imf-tells-uk-to-be-ready-to-redeploy-furlough-if-widespread-closures-needed-to-tackle-pandemic-12495540

ginnig · 14/12/2021 23:18

Imo you can't have closures without support.

ElectraBlue · 14/12/2021 23:20

Not a chance. Johnson knows he would not survive this after tonight's vote and the size of the Tory rebellion...

MarshaBradyo · 14/12/2021 23:22

The burden of furlough worries me

For us but more next generation

ginnig · 14/12/2021 23:25

Its a worry but what's the alternative? I was reading that youth unemployment in London "has soared by 55 per cent to 105,000 since the start of the pandemic with more than 21 per cent of young people jobless and seeking work,"

Plus high house prices they are going to have very tough futures.

NotABeliever · 14/12/2021 23:27

Does anyone know when the next announcement will be made? I read it was going to be on Monday 20/12 but cat find the article anymore.
