Will London be locked down before Christmas?

Could Londoners be locked down again this Christmas? How likely do people think this is? I’m dreading having to spend another Christmas without my family and am considering leaving early to avoid another lockdown.

@nancy75

There definitely are PCR walk in tests available in London, i’ve just done one, there was a massive queue of 2 people in front of me. I know things are crap at the moment but let’s not make them worse by spreading stuff that’s not true
I did one yesterday (West London). Husband and DD2 and DS did them on Saturday. West London, no wait, no drama.
julieca · 14/12/2021 16:56

They shut down the nearest PCR walk-in test site near me a few months ago.

Jourdain11 · 14/12/2021 16:57

@nancy75

Have we ever had a definitive ‘people can spread it for x number of days?’ 10 days was brought in quite early, when we didn’t know much - I wonder if they now have a more definite idea
I agree. 10 days is unmanageable for some people and it's dreadful for people (especially children) to be cooped up for 10 days with no outdoors access, while feeling perfectly fine or mildly under the weather. How is that healthy?

ScotRail considering timetable cuts after 400 trains cancelled by Covid staff absence
ScotRail is considering timetable cuts to provide a more reliable service to passengers after dozens of drivers were forced to self-isolate because of Covid, The Scotsman has learned.

Hmm.

Fears that so many doctors and nurses will themselves isolating with Omicron that some hospitals face having to close doors by mid Jan.

Even most conservative estimates “bleak”.

Big push coming on those voting against restrictions tonight

Government sources insist no one will be turned away but NHS staff shortages are a major concern. Whitty currently briefing MPs — medics have scared the whitehall horses today it seems.

Quartz2208 · 14/12/2021 17:36

So it is really the cases and isolation that is the problem in terms of bleakness I guess which is to be expected.

A decision really is needed on the 10 day isolation

Comefromaway · 14/12/2021 17:42

Dd has also done one in West London recently.

This was what I was worried about when the data on numbers came in.

It doesn't matter if it is really mild for most. It still creates an issue. Even if hospitalisations for covid are exceptionally low for omicron you've still got a bunch of people who need hospital treatment, electric plants (including nuclear) still need to run, water treatment, gas repairs, telephone line repairs, supermarkets open, delivery drivers delivering... basically all your key workers.

If you get a single onicrom case take out a whole department at the same time, you've got a problem. And we have numerous examples of Christmas Parties illustrating this is a very genuine and probable scenario.

Even if there were zero hospitalisations from omicron and no mandatory quaratine period, it might STILL be a problem if those who are sick are too ill to come to work if we have that many cases at once.

I really am looking at this week and next wondering who is going to be left standing by the end of it. I am wondering if going to get my booster is just an invitation to get onicrom at the same time.

These stories are going to get louder and louder over the next couple of days.

We won't need a lockdown. Nothing will be able to open safely or operate anyway. Including the things we NEED to serve us 24/7.

CBroads · 14/12/2021 19:04

Regardless of what Boris does, he won't get the compliance from the public.
Landlords around my area have already stated they won't be checking any covid passports if that comes in as a restriction.
I haven't worn a mask since last year, no one is questioning me, even if they do ill just blank them. This is how it should be, We need to make a stand against this blithering idiot.
BORIS OUT.

Imdreamingofapeacefulxmas · 14/12/2021 19:43

Red tooth brush.

Get booster and an invitation to get omicron at the same time...

I went to get my booster, it was so well run ect, absolutely lovely volunteer and staff but not much bloody ventilation!! One lady was rushing to shut the door after me when I was purposely holding it open!

I said "aren't we supposed to be ventilating??"

She said yes they are as people come in. Confused

She was wearing a t shirt, bare arms, totally bare arms and a gillet!!

YouGov on today's Plan B vote

Will London be locked down before Christmas?
Will London be locked down before Christmas?
HesterShaw1 · 14/12/2021 20:25

YouGov polls are so self selecting.

MarshaBradyo · 14/12/2021 20:28

I’m surprised people still link to those.

VikingOnTheFridge · 14/12/2021 21:35

@MarshaBradyo

I’m surprised people still link to those.
I'm not. The unrepresentative samples and people's desire to say the 'right' thing mean they provide very useful evidence for anyone who don't want to see the flaws.
julieca · 14/12/2021 21:48

No YouGov is way more accurate than social media.
If you went by MN you would think everyone is a very high earner, apart from a tiny number of people who use a foodbank and have nothing.
On Twitter, you would think transgender is peoples number one issue in life and what the election would be fought and won on.
You would think that the Brexit vote had been faked as most people are against it. And wonder why Boris Johnson is still PM when no-one supports him.

PrincessNutNuts · 14/12/2021 21:48

@HesterShaw1

YouGov polls are so self selecting.
No more so than Mumsnet threads, surely?

I'm sure people who are very anti covid measures would be all over a poll like that.

MarshaBradyo · 14/12/2021 21:51

I doubt it’s more accurate than here

But then mn doesn’t fit with rl either here

I don’t know anyone who wants a lockdown - as you see on here

Although I agree re Johnson you’d think the left had a huge majority going by this site

So actually both can be off

PrincessNutNuts · 14/12/2021 21:52

No one wants one.

Will London be locked down before Christmas?
MarshaBradyo · 14/12/2021 21:55

I’ve definitely seen a few

But also pro restrictions or doing less

Whereas irl London is busy as anything

It’s hard to get an accurate picture anywhere - but definitely not YouGov

Thewiseoneincognito · 14/12/2021 21:59

LOL 😂 you’re telling me the Anti-Maskers, Anti-Vaxxers, Anti-Lockdowners, and Anti-Restrictions brigade aren’t all over the YouGov polls like a rash?

They’re certainly all over the Covid Twitter comments and on here, so I don’t see how they’d let YouGov slip by.

VikingOnTheFridge · 14/12/2021 22:01

@julieca

Neither of them are going to give you an accurate reflection of attitudes in the general population. YouGov will tell you what people who are sufficiently able and interested in a particular issue to participate think. Social media will tell you what people using that particular medium think, there obviously being massive variation in the demographics using different platforms. So you don't refute the (not even remotely controversial) point that YouGov isn't very representative by saying social media isn't either.
MarshaBradyo · 14/12/2021 22:01

What a pleasant post

Typical anger coming through there.

No Twitter or YouGov for me but I’m not the things you list.

Boosted early as possible before rush, wear a mask but yes anti Lockdown

Are you pro Lockdown then?

To Wise

MarshaBradyo · 14/12/2021 22:03

And I have changed position re lockdown since the start of this

I’ve been pretty compliant but most can see the harm they cause by now.

Quartz2208 · 14/12/2021 22:08

YouGov chooses specific people (at least it did) so it would tailor what you were asked.

It used to be great actually when DD was born 12 years ago I did it loads and you could earn around £50 every 3-4 months. Then it changed and it became next to impossible to get many from it.

Its not a system I particularly like (and that has nothing to do with COVID) but it isnt something you can easily access like other social media channels!

No one should be for a lockdown - because lockdowns cause far more harm than good and I cannot see how with Omicron it is a good idea

Restrictions yes, sensible measures put in place to manage it through yes.

PrincessNutNuts · 14/12/2021 22:09

Then you know how it goes by now.
