"As pressure from virus rises, PM will give national address at 8pm tonight, updating the booster programme - sounds like this will NOT include new restrictions"

So all the screening of other diseases, operations and other such appointment will be halted and delayed, covid will take priority over everything. Mental health will spiral as panic sets in - driven by the type of announcement. I don't think scare mongering helps - of course people need to be wary but we should be moving to normality not hyping up fear and restrictions. We have to live with this virus and carry on - children and young people in particular have been heavily impacted and need to get their lives back before they feel the hopelessness set in.

On the other issues of Boris Johnson's approach - I don't care about his breach of regulations in that they are not central issues, I think he should be beyond reproach and set an example but what happened last year is in the past. If I'm cynical I think he is trying to use the latest scare as a way of diverting attention from his political problems. Either way his actions are a side show - my view is that scare mongering needs to stop and people need freedom and to start living again.

@TawnyPippit I have to say I did make a bit of a fuss when I went for my appointment for my booster - I did as I was meant to, waited right up to my appointment time to go in and there was probably about 100 people in front of me - all with appointments. I couldn't wait, I had work to get to. I made another one for the following day after my shift and still about 30 people in front of me.

Whinge · 12/12/2021 20:29

@TawnyPippit I'm sorry to hear how stressful things are. ☕🍰

He can say what he wants but we all know it's just not going to happen. Unfortunately it will be people like you who are faced with the stress and every day frustrations. While he sits there saying we can do this if we try just a little bit harder, and never lifting a bloody finger. 😡

@watchingthedetectives

Well Boris is a wanker thats for sure but ITUs are full of non vaccinated people making it impossible to get any beds for patients post cancer surgery ( and they often only need one night) so it is a valid point.

The NHS runs at pretty much maximum capacity so a few people in beds on ITU for a month can stop 50-100 operations

Did Boris announce where the £350million a week for the NHS he promised has gone?

If he had of actually done a proper job at any point of running the country then we would not have needed today's announcement.

containsnuts · 12/12/2021 20:29

Concerning plan for GPs to put other duties aside in order to prioritise boosters.

and by getting boosters we are not trying to live again ?
SickAndTiredAgain · 12/12/2021 20:30

@Borisjohnsonshairbrush

Guys, please see this as a good thing now...your boss will have fuck all choice if you need to allow your time off for a jab/booster.. 3hr wait? Much better than a cuntservatorie induced lockdown.
What do you mean fuck all choice?

Loads of employers will still say people should get their jabs on their own time, it hasn’t been made a requirement like a maternity appointment where they have to let you. So many employers wouldn’t give a shit.

the80sweregreat · 12/12/2021 20:30

It felt very 'war like ' to me , a war on something invisible, that would only half fill a Coke can if it was captured.
It's changed our lives for ages and we need to grit our teeth and try and get on with it now ;(
I know it's hard though. For all of us
It is just shit

IamGusFring · 12/12/2021 20:31

@Libertaire are they in cahoots with all the other countries in the world facing this same problem ?

PaintYourDreams · 12/12/2021 20:32

@sashagabadon

I hope everyone complaining is offering their services as a steward in a vaccination centre, they need lots of volunteers to help. Sign up on the goodsam app. I’ve accepted a couple of shifts over the next fortnight. Don’t just sit at home complaining, help!
Second this. They are desperate for volunteers. Easy to just mouth off online. Why not actually go and help if you're able to?

Shifts are usually 3 or 4 hours, easy to book as and when you can fit one in. Duties include asking the questions at the door, telling people where to stand, cleaning chairs after use etc.

But not South Africa's experience at all, they say it is a very weak variant and they have had no deaths.

We've had a consistent 1000 to 2000 people in ICU each day for months now, so surely, as Omicron takes over, Delta cases (the more severe variant) will drop off?

boosters don't stop you getting Omicron, so long covid is still going to be a huge issue.

PussyCatEatingPigsInBlankets · 12/12/2021 20:33

You don't think he's just found a load of vaccines with a use by date of 1st Jan 2022? 🤔

Oblomov21 · 12/12/2021 20:34

What did he announce please? I missed it.

AllThingsServeTheBeam · 12/12/2021 20:35

@Oblomov21

Everyone over 18 should be offered their booster by new year. And you should take it or else cancer patients will have their appointments cancelled and it will be your fault Hmm
RedToothBrush · 12/12/2021 20:35

The booking site.

I am in a queue to get in the queue...

MamDancer · 12/12/2021 20:36

The government will support the NHS in this emergency booster rollout by “deploying 42 military planning teams across every health region, standing up additional vaccine sites and mobile units, extending opening hours so clinics are open seven days a week with more appointments early in the morning, in the evening and at weekends, and training 1000s more volunteer vaccinators”, Johnson said.

Lifted from The Guardian.

TawnyPippit · 12/12/2021 20:36

LOL, someone called me a “fucking jobsworth” on Tuesday, which made me laugh - as I pointed out to them (while validating their parking ticket to give them free parking), its not actually my “job” as I was there (and had been from 7.30am) as a volunteer. I also had someone being very rude to me this morning (again, I was there at 7.30am, and on a Sunday morning) as she felt the site was “too warm” and all the staff were looking “very sweaty” because of it.

I think a lot of people just stop signing up when they have a run of shitty comments.

MaxNormal · 12/12/2021 20:36

This is just so weird. South Africa isn't even increasing their restrictions yet the UK is cancelling cancer operations.

Roundeartheratchriatmas · 12/12/2021 20:37

I’m clearly very lucky up here In the north as I’m mid 30s and was called for mine by my gp last week. It’s somewhat rural but not that rural.

Not sure what it will be like when i get there but wouldn’t have thought they’ve have started called healthy under 40s if they were already struggling.

ftw163532 · 12/12/2021 20:37

There aren't even 3 weeks left until the end of the year. How are they going to train up and deploy extra vaccinators? I thought the training took ages.

SnowyWinterFox · 12/12/2021 20:37

@RedToothBrush

The booking site.

I am in a queue to get in the queue...

I know. It reminded me of the time I tried to book tickets for Harry Potter world for half term.
RedToothBrush · 12/12/2021 20:37

Cant rebook. Cant get in the queue to rebook.

Wednesday 18 to 30 year olds get to book in before me.

Absolute fucking joke.

PM to give 8pm address tonight (Sunday), no new restrictions expected
itsgettingwierd · 12/12/2021 20:37

Well I guess the new 3 word slogan is "get boosted now"

I really hope this is enough to calm this wave. Was feeling pretty confident O variant was lest virulent but him saying it's clear 2 doses isn't enough actually sounded worrying.

Oblomov21 · 12/12/2021 20:38
