"As pressure from virus rises, PM will give national address at 8pm tonight, updating the booster programme - sounds like this will NOT include new restrictions"

Much slower in wales. We can’t book ourselves, have to sit and wait for a text or letter. DH is 56 and has his booster this coming week. We are lagging behind as usual.

Cyrilgoggin · 12/12/2021 20:20

I'm seriously pissed off about the Xmas parties but I can't see what was wrong with that broadcast. It's a good thing if more people can get their boosters, although I'd prefer to see more focus on getting the unvaccinated to get vaccinated.

My DH doesn't wear a wedding ring either. It's no big deal.

sashagabadon · 12/12/2021 20:20

And volunteers will likely get a jab at end of their first or second shift so no need to wait 2 weeks or whatever.

Libertaire · 12/12/2021 20:21

@Potatodrivers

So this is how it goes. The vaccine saves your life. Then that one vaccine is no longer enough and you need a second. But that also isn't enough so you need a third. People are hesitant, and so the booster is now the only one that works. Then another variant will come and you will need another booster, and on and on it goes. Oh the joys
When are people going to realise that this isn’t about the pandemic any more?

This is about a corrupt, right-wing authoritarian Tory government imposing never-ending controls and restrictions on a population rendered compliant by constant fearmongering in order to permanently entrench its own power while it siphons billions into its donors’ pockets.

cherin · 12/12/2021 20:21

…I’ve got this idea in my mind now of long queues forming and omicron happily transmitting between the people waiting…

MamDancer · 12/12/2021 20:21

Now he's announced this massive vax programme, hopefully all the booster waiters will get their jab ASAP now - or what was the point of the broadcast?

StrychnineInTheSandwiches · 12/12/2021 20:21

@fournonblondes

For triggering the lefties everyday. 🤣🤣🤣
it's not the lefties who are sharpening the knives for your hero.
Borisjohnsonshairbrush · 12/12/2021 20:22

He looks like a 3month old sprouting bag of spuds. What a numpty...

@Fallagain I don't think it will be a full locky-D, just a reset with the pubbing and clubs. Most places expect a dry Jan so affairs in order some places will cope with restricted boozing hrs

I've seen people spit in the street, pull their masks down to cough and openly not sanitised when required, not cleaned down gym equipment...these will be the targeted selfish unhygienic bastard's that spread germs and will get fined. It will get strict.

It's already an £80 to be caught spitting..

the80sweregreat · 12/12/2021 20:22

The unvaccinated will NOT get any jabs or boosters or anything at all.
He may ha ve sounded like a pound shop Churchill again , but people will not be convinced to go and get it now and never will be :(
It's the sad truth.

Warhertisuff · 12/12/2021 20:22

@tootyfruitypickle

I've been convinced it's milder but now I wonder if they are starting to get other indications.
It can paradoxically be a milder disease and be more pressure for the NHS. If it is, say, half as likely to lead to hospitalisations, but 4 times as many get it, that's twice as many in hospital...
CovidCorvid · 12/12/2021 20:23

I wonder if they’d let me give vaccines to help? I’m a qualified hcp who gives IM injections and teaches students to do it but when I last looked into it I needed to do hours and hours of e learning including terrorism prevention so I gave up.

tootyfruitypickle · 12/12/2021 20:24

Imagine coming out of I'm a celebrity to this - they won't have known there is a new variant will they?

SickAndTiredAgain · 12/12/2021 20:24

For those of you saying you can't get booked until end of December. Neither could I so I just turned up yesterday. They're not going to turn people away now. Turn up, be prepared to wait and get your booster.

Theoretically yes, but if everyone now does that, they’ll be turning people away due to quantity. You’ll need a lot more walk in centres to get everyone done by the end of the month.

2389Champ · 12/12/2021 20:24

I was all excited. I thought it was to announce the name of his baby girl!

watchingthedetectives · 12/12/2021 20:24

Well Boris is a wanker thats for sure but ITUs are full of non vaccinated people making it impossible to get any beds for patients post cancer surgery ( and they often only need one night) so it is a valid point.

The NHS runs at pretty much maximum capacity so a few people in beds on ITU for a month can stop 50-100 operations

Benjispruce5 · 12/12/2021 20:24

Jabs wear off. Is that so difficult to understand?

Porfre · 12/12/2021 20:24

I'm not saying anymore. But that's what they've asked GP practices.

They've told them stop all urgent/ same day work and jab as much as they can instead for the next 2 weeks.
Maybe someone else whose had the same message will elaborate or more information will come out about this in the next few days.

TawnyPippit · 12/12/2021 20:25

@Whinge

Everyone over 18 has the chance to get their booster before the new year - Utter bullshit.

There's a huge shortage of appointments. What's he planning on cancelling to make this happen? 🙄

Yep, this. I volunteer at a vaccine clinic. It’s a big one, we work really hard. Our highest number of vaccinations before yesterday was just over 1000 in a day (it was in the summer) with a full complement of staff. That was going proper gangbusters. I was volunteering today and apparently yesterday we did 1300. That is so far above what we can handle its a bit worrying - apparently there was some proper argybargy at the check-in zone; not sure what about but basically when you make people wait, who are quite stressed, its alway going to be a bit fraught. One of the senior people on site was saying to me this morning that she was in tears at the end of the day yesterday as there was just so much stuff going on. There have also been problems with getting staff to sign up and that is one of the things which drives out turnover/throughput - how many staff we have on duty.

But Boris Johnson says we are going to be doing again well above even this 1300 peak number every single day till New Year. Fun times. With the best will in the world we simply don’t have the resources to pretty much double our highest output for 3 weeks straight.

Benjispruce5 · 12/12/2021 20:25

Our vaccines were developed to fight off the alpha variant so no wonder we need a booster.

PicsInRed · 12/12/2021 20:25
@PicsInRed
Yep, that's our very own British Booster. 😂

Kshhuxnxk · 12/12/2021 20:26

@CovidCorvid

I wonder if they’d let me give vaccines to help? I’m a qualified hcp who gives IM injections and teaches students to do it but when I last looked into it I needed to do hours and hours of e learning including terrorism prevention so I gave up.
And yet my DP who has no medical training at all had to learn from Youtube to give me my B12 injection for PA! Don't get me wrong, it suits me better but he's already burst one blood vessel so really want's someone to show him how to do it properly.
Warhertisuff · 12/12/2021 20:26

@Whinge

People who want to get boosters are being turned away or given appointments in several weeks time. It's not that people are refusing to get jabbed, they're not able to. Guilt trips about cancer treatment and overwhelming the NHS aren't helpful

Based on the PMs speech, I expect that situation will change very shortly. As per my earlier post, there's been a step change in booster availability over the past couple of days.

ftw163532 · 12/12/2021 20:27

But Mr Johnson said in order to reach the new jab target, certain other medical appointments will need to be postponed to the New Year.

Do we have anything more specific about which appointments?

Or has it just been left vague so everybody with important appointments in the next days and weeks can worry themselves sick about not receiving care?

Borisjohnsonshairbrush · 12/12/2021 20:27

Guys, please see this as a good thing now...your boss will have fuck all choice if you need to allow your time off for a jab/booster..
3hr wait? Much better than a cuntservatorie induced lockdown.

Warhertisuff · 12/12/2021 20:27

@Benjispruce5

Our vaccines were developed to fight off the alpha variant so no wonder we need a booster.
They were developed to fight off the original Wuhan virus. Alpha didn't come into the scene until late 2020, not long before the first vaccine was given.
