Whitty

Johnson

I wonder what they’ll say.

@twelly

But the reports are that it could be young people that are most affected by this variant so let the scientists do their jobs . Like they said it may not be all doom and gloom . They have to see what happens over the next couple of weeks . If hospital figures don’t rise then happy days again.

paranoidnamechanger · 08/12/2021 19:24

@herecomesthsun

why should I as a healthy 30 something who has been vaccinated wear a mask in theatre or the cinema

It is now the law, as far as I can make out

It was the law at various points before during the pandemic but so what? Nobody challenged me when I took mine off at all the screenings I went to. The ushers can do fuck all.

@PastMyBestBeforeDate

Sick to the back teeth of people whinging about a two-tier society. We already have one. The people who are most vulnerable are already largely shut out of society. Apparently it's fine to tell them to 'just shield'. But the minute anyone suggests people who have actively chosen not to have a vaccine , stay at home? Oh that's segregation.
No one shielding was threatening with police action if they didn't adhere to the measures.
Labtest7 · 08/12/2021 19:24

@vickyc90 uts not the unvaccinated taking up thr majority of beds in critical care. Also, as a healthy not overweight 60 year old, I had covid and was absolutely fine, as were most of my friends, this was prior to vaccines. 14 months later I still have immunity. I don't know a single person who has had covid twice, but every single person I know who has had it recently is double vaccinated.

Mistyped. I'm 50 not 60.

AlecTrevelyan006 · 08/12/2021 19:25

The mandatory vaccination question helped to finally reveal the full plan.

What Boris said was that he didn't want to see continued 'non pharmaceutical interventions' (npi's)(e.g masks, distancing etc) into the future.

He wants all restrictions lifted in the new year, no more masks and no more tests once the booster vaccines have 'held' omicron. I think here he is referring to 'operation rampdown', but crucially this will be for the vaccinated only.

The majority of the population will jump at this chance to return to 'normality'.

The end goal is finally revealed.

PestoPlum · 08/12/2021 19:25

@Cyrilgoggin

Why are some of you reacting so badly to this? It's a genuine question. Some more measures, like more mask wearing and wfh if you can. Seems sensible to me? Not the end of the world?

Slowly boiling the frog.....

wincarwoo · 08/12/2021 19:26

@Skinnytailedsquirrel

Bloody hell, so glad that lots of you lot weren't involved in the World Wars.

Is it REALLY such a hardship to put a facemask on? Get a life. If that is all you have to worry about you're very lucky.

That's not what Im reading from this thread. It's not masks that most are worried about.
2022HereWeCome · 08/12/2021 19:26

two fucking years and we get the usual panic over a variant. I no longer support the NHS - if it cannot cope two years into a pandemic when the majority of the population have been jagged, some long hard questions need to be asked.

Ugh the war shite!

Unsure33 · 08/12/2021 19:28

@TheShallows

You do know this could happen if you get covid as well . It can cause blood clots in every organ in your body . I know someone who can only just return to work after 4 months in hospital and 3 months at home . Not old either .

Ghoulette · 08/12/2021 19:28

@the80sweregreat

Whitty said that just two jabs might not be enough to evade the new variant If people are not going to get the booster , then we might be fucked ? .
The booster and vaccines stop YOU dying or beicoming seriously ill, NOT transmission. It's been that way since the start.

Why do people still think it stops transmission when for over a year we have been told it doesn't, multiple times, over and over again? It's about YOU NOT DYING OR CLOGGING UP ITU!

I'm sure they said that when the delta variant first came to light

snowballer · 08/12/2021 19:29

Were you? Both of them?! Incredible!

PastMyBestBeforeDate · 08/12/2021 19:29

I'm not talking about police action Xeno

Tulipomania · 08/12/2021 19:30

I am 57. Triple jabbed.

I feel very uncomfortable if I have to be in close proximity to strangers who don't wear masks.

The last flights I took - in September - both legs I was unlucky enough to sit next to selfish idiots who thought they did not need to wear masks for the whole journey. There was no enforcement.

I am not that scared of Covid but I am terrified of long Covid. I run my own business. I cannot afford to be laid low for any length of time.

It's the law but a lot of venues don't agree so don't enforce it.

Unsure33 · 08/12/2021 19:31

@NMC2022

It’s easy . We pay for the nhs so we have to pay more and in my humble option get rid of the nhs trust system .

It’s our money that pays for it not the government.

EnnAndJay · 08/12/2021 19:31

Yep.

We have zero idea of what Long Covid will be like with Omicron.

TheVampiresWife · 08/12/2021 19:31

@vera99

Jet2 want a signed letter from a doctor before they will accept mask exemption. On our holiday in the Canaries a week ago saw not a single folk indoors or on transport without one. Funny that.
Probably because doctors aren't issuing letters like these, so those who were exempt wouldn't have been able to go on the holiday.

Of course it can't, when 99% of ITU admissions are the selfish unvaccinated? So people who aren't actually selfish fucks who need to be in ITU for other things are getting shunted and dying.
Unsure33 · 08/12/2021 19:32

@onewayanother

That is the reports that are coming out , however this is early days from a country with a low vaccination rate. Just give them a chance .

I agree with that. We need to be able to live with it and if that means increasing the capacity of the NHS that's what we should do.

The vaccine greatly reduces your chance of being a burden on the NHS and by that our kids. I agree recovery should be treat like vaccination aslong as the person using it pays for antibody test at the same intervals as vaccination to show they still have antibodies to COVID and therefore a T cell response. If they want to avoid that cost the booster is free and preferable as it will likely be tailored to future variants going forward like the flu vaccine.

minitree · 08/12/2021 19:34

Well it might make a difference to your own health sticking it to the man by increasing your risk of getting ill

Exactly what I was thinking
