I know natural long lasting immunity is not supposed to exist anymore but I beg to differ because I don’t work for Pfizer.

@DeclineandFall

Plan B is important as the Omicron variant marches on. But of course this government are using it as a dead cat to distract from Johnson's lying and yet again seriously undermining important messaging in a public health crisis. So more people will get ill and die. He needs to go.

This… definitely an example of “dead cat” political strategy.

They can’t have another lockdown because people won’t comply. And not surprised because this government have been political with a public health issue.

So I suspect we will have WFH “lite” and masks for longer.

I read somewhere that Pfizer doesn’t do as well against the new variant - so yet again that’s young ones screwed.

Love this government. Utter shower of incompetent wankers who just have not listened and acted on all scientific advice.

I hope they fuck off.

It’s such a load of bollocks and I agree with everything you say @Lostinacloud. I’m double vaccinated, I caught covid in October as did my teenage DCs. My DCs have not had the vaccine seeing as they’ve had covid already and were absolutely fine and no doubt now have antibodies. I think it is totally unethical to bring in vaccine passports to coerce people into having a medical procedure that has no benefit to them. I’m astounded anyone could think this is about covid anymore and not about control, it’s a very slippery slope. My friend has still got severe vertigo and is still off work sick following her 2nd Astra Zeneca in June what about people like her? I doubt she wants to be lining up for more and more vaccines but soon she will be classed as unvaccinated. I feel like I am living in a parallel universe at the moment. It’s actually frightening to see how quickly people turn on each other and are to happy for governments to mandate what we put in our bodies just to live a normal life! Especially when you can still get covid after being vaccinated!

We've just been in Israel where they have the "Green Pass" system - it's like a vaccine passport; scan-able QR code that you present to enter venues, attractions, restaurants and cafes.

Mask wearing is mandatory in all public indoor areas unless seated and on all public transport. In fact the only people we saw not wearing masks were two British Tourists on a Tram.

Their lockdown guidance has always been well published (none of this "interpret how you would like to" nonsense that we've had to endure... And their contact tracing system is phenomenal.

This isn't solely to blame the UK Government but I am so sick of hearing people saying they've done an awesome job. They simply haven't, particularly with the mask wearing fiasco.

Tube yesterday and half the carriages on two journeys and at least a third on the other two journeys were not wearing masks, and made no attempt to socially distance themselves from mask wearing passengers.

The time for a plan B was weeks ago, even before Omicron, Delta has taken up so much NHS capacity.

Uk has the highest Omicron infection rate in Europe and no its not sequencing, PCR tests pick it up and all countries are looking out for this new variant.

Plan B is about distracting us from the Govt parties held last xmas, which is astounding, jobs, livelihoods will be used to protect our PM.

I helped put him there.

@SickAndTiredAgain

I'm the opposite view , I think the leak of the party and them laughing about it is purposely leaked . They then bring restrictions in the public won't follow . The govt doesn't want us to follow as the economy needs money. Then in January they can blame the public for not following the rules. We are being played

But the plan b rules aren’t really ones that the public can ignore are they? I mean, if a venue requires you to show a vaccine passport, then you have to show it, or not go. If my office says to wfh (and they will if the government says to), then I have to wfh.
Rules like not seeing friends/family are ones I think absolutely would have less compliance now, but that’s not what’s being discussed.

A lot of small business now might not work from home
Small restaurants might allow bookings for more than 6 people if they bring in the rule of 6 again. There is lots of ways people can ignore the rules

I read that phifzer isn't very effective against omi so why are we having it as a booster & why bother doing the kids?

I'm booked for my booster next week but now I don't feel reassured & yes already had covid.

People do realise that you can "take up a hospital bed" if you get cancer or have a heart attack, right? Covid is not the only illness out there! I refuse to have a digital id card basically, so as to protect an NHS that successive governments have destroyed. Yes, it's overwhelmed-when is it not?? That is down to the government to fix, not us to destroy our lives by stopping living so we don't "take up a bed".

@BrightYellowDaffodil

I'm no swivel-eyed anti-covid loon but I am deeply unhappy with the idea of passports. We already live in such a divided society and to see further division actually brought about by government sits very uncomfortably.

As for the timing, well it's dead cat politics, isn't it?

As far as I've seen from all the reports on Omicron it's milder and yet we are chucking everything under the bus that isn't actually Covid - heaven help you if you run a business where you depend on commuters, or your mental health problems had been improved by being back in the office and having social contact, however distanced, or whatever. No, Covid is the only thing that is treated as if it matters, apparently, and I'm fucking sick of it.

We're all fucking sick of it. But how much would you like to be sitting outside A&E in the freezing cold for hours on end, in agony, because you got hit by a bus on your way to work and the hospital is full of covid patients?

@Turquoisesea I've just had my second (and possibly third, although the middle one may have been long covid) round of Covid.

Having Covid does not protect you for the long-term. Immunity wanes still. Hence booster vaccines.

In fact pretty much half the people I know who had Covid early on have now had it again - some vaccinated (but not boostered as not offered and were vaccinated as health care workers prior to Feb this year), some not.

Having covid does not exempt you from having it again, or spreading it.

@megustalacerveza

I can't believe people are STILL asking why it makes a difference whether people are vaccinated or not.

Being vaccinated vastly, vastly reduces the chances of ending up in ICU. Every single person who chooses not to be vaccinated is contributing to the burden on the NHS because they are taking up a bed they wouldn't have otherwise needed. They are also much more likely to get infected in the first place and therefore more likely to spread it. Keeping unvaccinated people out of events, restaurants, etc. makes it less likely they'll either get or spread covid.

You cannot say that every single unvaccinated person is taking up a bed and contributing to the burden of the NHS.

There are plenty of unvaccinated people who have had covid who have managed at home just fine without any medical attention. And plenty of vaccinated people who have still ended up in hospital and are taking up beds.

Also plenty of women as highlighted previously (and in separate MN threads) that have had to seek medical attention from the NHS after having wonky periods and post menopausal periods causing cancer scares and therefore needing to be checked out. Confused

It’s not about control. It’s about stopping the NHS from falling over.

As most of us won’t actually see what’s happening on the NHS wards, it’s very difficult to imagine how bad it is. It’s so abstract.

But people will die and have died because the nhs has been utterly fucked over. Lockdown helped smooth it out but now people are resisting.

We need more visibility of how the nhs is faring.

I’m 40, I’ve been double jabbed as have my husband. We have no risk factors when it comes to covid. We’ve never had it, neither have my family or his. So it feels abstract.

However. I believe the nhs when they say it’s fucked. So we really need something to help.

I just don't see it will make any difference
Work from home "if you can". Employers will just go no you can't and have people in the office anyway
Masks. People are just saying they're exempt, most wearing masks were still wearing them anyway

But it is the only illness which is almost completely preventable for the vast majority of people if they'd only have a bloody vaccine!!!!

You do realise it could be YOU or one of YOUR family members who ends up dying because there's no bed for you after an accident or a heart attack? Because someone who could have had a jab and stayed out of the ICU chose not to? That doesn't bother you at all?

I don't like the rhetoric of unvaccinated filling up hospitals or forcing vaccines despite being pro for myself. People fill up the NHS because of bad diet, bad driving, too much drink or drug use etc etc why are they are more deserving?

@WineGetsMeThroughIt almost 40% of people in hospital with covid are unvaccinated, even though only less than 10% of adults as a whole are unvaccinated. So the unvaccinated are taking up a disproportionate number of hospital beds. For something so incredibly preventable.

Please learn some maths.
@Lostinacloud This is my argument against them here , being vaccinated doesn't stop you spreading the virus it reduces it only , therefore the passport is useless it's just a way of forcing people to get vaccinated
Have you not heard about viral load?
