I thought it was 200,000 as an estimated proportion of the total number of people currently infected (and in that infection window in the four nations combined) with covid as opposed to daily positives but I can't tell you where I read that.

@bordermidgebite

Many thanks.

ConcernedAuntie · 15/12/2021 15:55

@Summerofcontent

Many thanks. I get that but I'm trying to get it through to my friend.

containsnuts · 15/12/2021 16:03

Today's numbers Shock

IndigoC · 15/12/2021 16:05

78,000. A record?

Piggyinblankets · 15/12/2021 16:10

Data people : anyone know anything about ventilation? A colleague has been told to improve hers by putting fans in her room??

boys3 · 15/12/2021 16:10

Big case number reported today.

Does not look to be much of a lag.

96.5% of the cases reported today for England have Sunday to Tuesday spec dates.

Your friend may want to have a read of the ventilation section of this excellent guide put together by aerosol transmission experts:

Piggyinblankets · 15/12/2021 16:19

Thank you very much: this rather cracks me up as schools have been told anything up to 1500 is safe ,which is very much not what this says...

Itisasecret · 15/12/2021 16:22

EvErYThInG Is Fiiiiiiiiiiine.

Nearly 80k is to be expected, nothing to see here... Xmas Hmm

titchy · 15/12/2021 16:31

So if only half of all cases are confirmed through testing that would mean around 160,000 cases today Shock Which is slap bang in the middle of the LSHTM (I think) modelling that Sajid Javid quoted the top end of. Yikes.

Huge spike in LFT's - no wonder there are none to be had. I wonder whether these are "worried well" ie: no symptoms, but just checking themselves out, and getting positives, or actual "I don't feel well, I will check with an LFT before bothering with a PCR".
Quartz2208 · 15/12/2021 16:42

Yes with the huge spike in LFTs plus as boys said little lag it is hard to actually know where we are in terms of modelling (at least for me!).

Lelivre · 15/12/2021 16:57

Fans won't do much will they unless all the windows are open. Fans with hepa filters built in are required. Perhaps that is what was meant.

No, the highest ever number of daily cases so far was 81,475 on 29th December 2020 when four times fewer daily tests were carried out than today.
sirfredfredgeorge · 15/12/2021 17:02

No, the highest ever number of daily cases so far was 81,475 on 29th December 2020 when four times fewer daily tests were carried out than today

That was the highest individual specimen date, only 53,135 were reported that day.

Quartz2208 · 15/12/2021 17:04

We didnt have LFT back in December - they came in March which must also have an impact on figures - how many today were LFTs?

sirfredfredgeorge · 15/12/2021 17:05

South Africa still trending downwards in growth rate, with more indications that Gauteng is close to R=1. So I still think existing immunity does a lot to dampen Omicron - however I don't think we have enough existing immunity, and Boris should be announcing restrictions today that actually "flatten the curve" so we get to the immunity without overwhelming hospitals.

(ie closing indoor events)

Puzzledandpissedoff · 15/12/2021 17:08

According to a Guardian piece, the UKHSA have changed the "case definition" of Omicron ... does anyone know what this involves, please?

sirfredfredgeorge · 15/12/2021 17:10

how many today were LFTs?

~16,000 so still not enough for the December one, however would be close with the previous highest announcement, but it also doesn't say about how many of the PCR only were people who had a positive LFD and just didn't report it which we have tended to believe is high. The rules on getting a PCR test have also changed, in that time period you simply isolated, now you PCR to avoid isolation, a big difference encouraging PCR'ing

Piggywaspushed · 15/12/2021 17:15

That is definitely not what ismeant lelivre....

herecomesthsun · 15/12/2021 17:15

Re LFTs, the advice if you have a positive case in the house, for school children, is to do an LFT every day before you go to school, and only go if it is negative.

Me, I'm doing LFTs daily so that if I test positive I can get treatment (or get into a treatment trial) as someone who is vulnerable.

We are also being asked to test if we are going out, or going to see a vulnerable relative etc.

So lots of valid reasons for doing LFTs.
