More people in hospital now are vaccinated than unvaccinated?

Can someone give me some stats behind this?

Someone has just told me that more vaccinated people are being hospitalised with covid than unvaccinated at the moment.

I’m only after facts, no opinions. Keep it unbiased. I’ve just tried to google this myself but between finding a reliable article, my screaming 2 year old and my pregnancy brain fog(it just plain exhaustion) - I can’t find much about this?

Is it true, if it’s true does this mean the vaccine isn’t working? I’m fully vaccinated.. just curious as it’s being debated on a local article at the moment.

Without looking at any numbers, if absolutely everyone in the country was vaccinated, what proportion of people in hospital would you expect to be vaccinated?

It's a numbers game. It's not unexpected.

pointythings · 07/11/2021 16:50

It's very simple. The majority of the population is now vaccinated. So in terms of absolute numbers, you will see that more vaccinated people are in hospital because there are more of them.

If you look at the numbers in hospital now compared to a year ago, before the vaccines existed, you will see current numbers are much, lower. It's the same for the number of deaths. This shows that the vaccines are working.

Do they work 100%? No. But there isn't a single medicinal product that works 100%, so that should not surprise us.

hellcatspangle · 07/11/2021 16:53

Of course they are, that's because massive numbers of our population generally are now double vaccinated. Add to that the people that usually end up in hospital in the winter are the over 70's....who are nearly all double vaccinated, It's not rocket science 🤷🏼‍♀️

PurpleDaisies · 07/11/2021 16:54

Base rate fallacy.

The More or Less podcast is really good on this.

Most drivers wear seatbelts. Most people who end up in hospital after a car crash will have worn one. That doesn’t mean that seatbelts don’t work. You need to compare the proportion of people wearing seatbelts and those not wearing seatbelts to see that.

enjoyingscience · 07/11/2021 16:56

I’d think that was very likely, but only as a result of the very high vaccination rate.

This is a good article on why this is expected

This.

The seat belt analogy is a really good one.

The other thing is see what the end result of the seat belt wearers vs the non seat belt wearers is.

SweetBabyCheeses99 · 07/11/2021 16:58

For several months now the weekly UKHSA (formerly PHE) Vaccine Surveillance Report has been showing that infection rates (per 100,000 people) are significantly higher in the “doubled jabbed”.

The info is all out there, you just need to open your eyes. Everyone will be peaked by something in the end.

So much sanity on this thread! Flowers

Yep. Guardian figures say 68.3% of the population are now fully vaccinated, as of 6/11/21.
More people in hospital now are vaccinated than unvaccinated?
RainbowZebraWarrior · 07/11/2021 17:02

Someone explained it really well on here a couple of weeks ago. Something like 90% of the population is now double vaccinated. There were (at the time) 30% of people in hospital unvaccinated, and 70% vaccinated.

That means 3 times as many unvaccinated people in hospital (30% of those hospitalised are coming from just 10% of the population)

What on earth do you mean?
MsWarrensProfession · 07/11/2021 17:04

The majority of the population are vaccinated and more to the point the ones who aren't vaccinated are disproportionately children who are very very rarely hospitalised with Covid.
This is the FT's data visualisation from a couple of months ago.

Yes they have been reporting this but it's based on a wholly inappropriate denominator which seriously over estimates the number of unvaccinated people, and hence under estimates the Covid rate in unvaccinated people and is grossly misleading. All reputable statisticians are screaming at them to stop.

90% of adult population that should be.
TragicRabbit · 07/11/2021 17:11

I wonder if there’s a feeling amongst some of the double jabbed that they’re somehow immune. That and the lax attitude around mask wearing.
I’m part of the ONS study for Covid and have had my antibodies checked since the beginning of the summer. Despite being double jabbed my last antibody test came back as negative. So I’m guessing I’m back to square one as far as protection goes. And I can’t be alone in that.

"info is all out there" "open your eyes"

You might as well have said "do your own research" or "wake up". Ridiculous. Grin

I love the seat belt analogy too.

www.theguardian.com/theobserver/commentisfree/2021/sep/19/take-care-with-claims-about-unvaccinated-case-rates-covid

From Sept but I think it summarises one of the main points from the More or Less programme, namely that the number of unvaccinated people is over estimated, by as much as 1 million. Obviously people that don’t exist can’t get covid so it’s skewing the stats.

bigbluebus · 07/11/2021 18:39

I presume that everyone admitted to hospital has a covid test regardless of the reason for their admission. Some of those will test positive. Most of them will be double vaccinated. They still need to be admitted for whatever medical condition they have - for some this will be Covid related, for others it will be totally unrelated and they may have no/mild covid symptoms but I assume they'll all be counted in the 'people in hospital with covid' figures.

FreshFreesias · 07/11/2021 18:41

Obviously the vax doesn’t work

Theworldisfullofgs · 07/11/2021 18:43

The person who told you this, what was their evidence?

Anecdotally from my nhs contacts (work related) most people admitted aren't vaccinated. I'll see if there is any stats

Theworldisfullofgs · 07/11/2021 18:43
