and noticed that very few people are wearing masks. I know you don't have to etc etc but I thought that these shops were 'encouraging' people to wear them.

In M and S out of around 12 staff that I saw, only one was wearing a mask.

I felt like a bit of a weirdo for wearing one Confused -

I’ve been to a few supermarkets since you didn’t have to wear them. I don’t wear one but each time I only saw one or two others not wearing mask. Literally everyone still was.

TheTallOakTrees · 09/08/2021 18:36

I noticed a mixture of some do and some don't.

I was shocked at the weekend when a staff member in our small Boots told a customer that she should wear a mask. The woman said that she was exempt and Boots staff member who was behind a perspex screen wearing a mask remarked with a sneering voice why don't you just try to wear one anyway. Shocked that given behind perspex a d wearing mask she was so over the top to a customer who said she was exempt.

Unnecessary

@VanishingWitch

DH went to our local Co-Op yesterday, no-one was wearing masks in there - customers and staff. DH wore his because he still wants to but had a snippy comment from another customer about wearing masks. I think if you want to wear one, wear it and if you don't want to then don't. It's your decision, as it is theirs. Everyone has their own reasons for doing what they need to do.
Totally agree and others should not comment either why

@Niceicebaby

Interesting that in Waitrose virtually all staff and shoppers were. Different demographic I guess.
Nice try but it doesn't work
JustLoveYourselfALittle · 09/08/2021 18:57

I love not seeing people in masks. Its getting back to normal!

And waitrose bullshit.. I collected a cake from there last week and it was only about 50% compliance.

AbsolutelyPatsy · 09/08/2021 20:13

i find it very surprising those that dont in the supermarkets,
and they are few and far between

newnortherner111 · 09/08/2021 20:30

It's the majority still wearing them where I live.

It's still the law in Wales and Scotland.

herecomesthsun · 09/08/2021 20:34

Still almost all wearing masks in Waitrose here.

Also went to a cafe today, eating outside, before a country walk. Everyone was being very careful.

Azilliondegrees · 09/08/2021 20:41

Went to the Natural History Museum this weekend and was appalled at the ridiculous proportion of visitors not wearing masks. The V&A was full of masks, not so the NHM.

GlencoraP · 09/08/2021 22:06

Went to Waitrose today , the only person not wearing a mask was a member of staff who I know is exempt

RampantIvy · 09/08/2021 23:35

Went to our local Tesco this evening. Nearly everyone was wearing a mask.

PopcornMuncher · 09/08/2021 23:48

Appalled because people are not following rules that don't exist any more?

wondersun · 09/08/2021 23:59

My mask is for you, your mask for me.

We wear them because we care for each other or just because it’s law it seems.

Glitterblue · 10/08/2021 03:48

Most people in my local Tesco still are. It's only the holiday makers who don't seem to be.

HarebrightCedarmoon · 10/08/2021 03:58

What I noticed from the non-mask wearers in shops and on the train yesterday was they appear to be in some of the higher risk groups for getting covid more severely. Male, fat and middle aged, a lot of them.

Ilovechocolatetoomuch · 10/08/2021 04:32

Peak District on holiday and mixed experience. Alton towers maybe 5% definitely less than south where we live.
I don’t really understand, you can still catch covid with the vaccine can’t you?

spinachandchickpea · 10/08/2021 04:37

How rubbish it must be to be clinically vulnerable and people given all these freedoms can’t even be bothered to wear a mask. Society huh.

EmmaGrundyForPM · 10/08/2021 04:42

I went into Cambridge on Saturday. It was very busy. Most people were wearing masks in shops. I joined a long queue in a cafe and everyone in the queue except the woman behind me was wearing a mask.

Then on Sunday we drove down to Devon and it was really noticeable that the further west we went, the fewer people there were with masks on. At one service stop we queued in Costa and of the 12 people in the queue, only one person aside from ourselves was wearing a mask. Once we got to Devon hardly anyone was wearing one in shops.

Then yesterday we went to the Sussex Coast. More people here are wearing masks than in Devon, but still far less than Cambridge.

I'm not sure why the differences. All three places I've been to in the last 3 days are busy tourist spots so you'd think the mask wearing rates would be similar but they're not.

No staff wearing them in the massive local Sainsbury's ...much frothing on the neighbourhood FB group.

userxx · 10/08/2021 06:44

@thickandfast

I think Waitrose has a very high mask wearing compliance, as others have noted everyone was wearing a mask the last couple of times I've been in

Not the case in my local Waitrose.

fadingfast · 10/08/2021 07:10

The local Waitrose still has a very high rate of mask wearing. In fact I only saw one member of staff without one last week. Our city currently has quite a high rate of cases, as does Cambridge I believe, which might explain the higher rate of compliance. I think people on holiday, eg to places like Devon/Cornwall and the Peak District probably think the rates there are lower and therefore there’s no need. Plus when you’re on holiday you want to try and deny it exists forget all about it.

PopcornMuncher · 10/08/2021 07:42

My mask is for you, your mask for me.

We wear them because we care for each other or just because it’s law it seems.

Which is fine if you believe they make any difference. If you don't and you have struggled badly with them you're just delighted to ditch them

PopcornMuncher · 10/08/2021 07:45

At lower league football game at the weekend out of a crowd of 5k I could count on both my hands the number of masks I saw so I'd say I'm not alone. One of the very few mask wearers was a club official

musicalfrog · 10/08/2021 08:03

People are in holiday mode. They want to relax and wearing a mask is a faff. I'm wearing one only in places where it's busy and most other people are.
