and noticed that very few people are wearing masks. I know you don't have to etc etc but I thought that these shops were 'encouraging' people to wear them.

In M and S out of around 12 staff that I saw, only one was wearing a mask.

I felt like a bit of a weirdo for wearing one Confused -

@BeeDavis

What is the point of posts like this? Do you want a Blue Peter badge for wearing your mask? At the end of the day it’s not law anymore so I don’t understand why you’re jumping on here to post about it.
So it's ok to post that you won't wear a mask, but not ok to post that you will?

I have a choice to shop where I feel safe. (I already have a blue peter badge)

Catma2021 · 06/08/2021 18:45

I’d say more do than don’t near me. I prefer to wear one. I think we’re in for a shit winter if we don’t practice good hygiene now.

Topseyt · 06/08/2021 18:51

The only place I am continuing to wear a mask now is in medical establishments.

Whammyyammy · 06/08/2021 19:22

Another post about people not wearing masks..... its not a legal requirement to wear one.
If you want to wear one great, if you don't want to wear one, also great.

I cant stand the useless things, and am glad I no longer have to wear one.

nordica · 06/08/2021 19:35

Almost every customer in my local Co-Op was wearing one this week - I was surprised. My area has had low take up for the vaccine so actually wearing a mask in indoor spaces where you meet strangers makes a lot of sense here.

CoffeeWithCheese · 06/08/2021 19:57

Wondered where the day's Masking Forecast was.

M+S high, falling to low later
Tesco moderate, blustery in the beans aisle.

EffOrf · 06/08/2021 20:05

I haven't felt encouraged to wear a mask anywhere but the dentist where I wore one as it is a medical establishment, I have been to loads of different shops and going by Mumsnet it seemed that almost everywhere would be actively encouraging this but not so.

Hairbrush123 · 06/08/2021 20:47

Without risking sounding rude but what are you hoping to gain from posting this question, OP? It’s no longer mandatory and people have been given the choice whether or not to wear a mask.

I wear one in a medical setting and would happily wear one if I was asked to but I don’t mostly. Vaccine uptake where I am is 90%+ for first dose so I feel reasonably safe.

So you counted the people not wearing masks ? Sorry op but I’m too busy shopping to notice or care . As others have said what’s the point to this thread ?
EffOrf · 06/08/2021 20:58

I guess OP was expecting people to be standing in the entrance of shops encouraging mask wearing as that is what Mumsnet said would happen, meanwhile back in the real world...

If that happened I'd be shopping elsewhere!

@RampantIvy

The thing is, the virus doesn't observe the law. It does what it wants to do, and as I am risk averse I will continue to wear a mask, keep my distance from people, and observe strict hygiene. I am also double vaccinated.
You do sound very risk averse, but I doubt you think this much about the thousands of other risks that life can throw up.. which is fine but it doesn't mean it's logical.
JaceLancs · 06/08/2021 22:14

I’ve not worn one since the 19th
Struggled before then due to claustrophobia - I do try and keep a reasonable distance from people though and actually think that’s more important

Darbs76 · 06/08/2021 22:20

I went to a services the other day and I’d say maybe 20% wearing masks. Maybe as they’d mainly gone in to eat, so didn’t bother. I actually forgot mine and didn’t bother going back to the car as just recovered from Covid. But I do plan on wearing it in shops still, especially after experiencing Covid, it was no ‘mild cold’ as many claim. Not for me anyway

HungryHippo11 · 06/08/2021 23:18

Don’t know what they think has changed to have done such a 180 on it!
The law
The law is what has changed

fantasmasgoria1 · 06/08/2021 23:36

I observed that when the restrictions were lifted quite a lot of people were still wearing masks. I noticed now that as the days have gone by that mask wearing has lessened quite a lot. This is in several places too not just the same city.

Balloonrace · 07/08/2021 00:54

@UniversalAunt

Oddly, it is younger people here who are wearing masks - walking down the street in the open air. What gives?

Whereas the local M&S & Tesco etc have pensioner posses who tore off their masks many weeks ago.

I don't think this is that surprising. Firstly, as has been pointed out before, people often wear masks outside when going from building to building just to avoid having to keep taking them off and putting them on again. Secondly, younger people are most likely to be only partially vaccinated right now, and even if they can be pretty sure covid won't make them seriously ill, that won't stop it wrecking young people's holidays if caught at the wrong time so they fail a PCR before flying somewhere. And they have families who might be more likely to be ill, and they're not stupid, they know about long covid. I don't think it's the case at all that all young people don't care at all if they catch covid right now, or that the best thing for young people is if covid just spreads without any of us bothering to try to cut chains of transmission when we can.
frozendaisy · 07/08/2021 01:05

I haven't a clue about mask wearing percentage in whatever "financial class" supermarket anyone wants to comment on.

That's what this title felt like, like shoppers in M&S should be wearing masks because they are in M&S and that's dead posh.

God life is too short for this surely.

KentuckyCriedFricken · 07/08/2021 06:17

Happily binned all of mine in May and never want to see another mask again. Given the lack of hygiene that I saw with many mask-wearers (masks being pulled out of pockets, hand bags, clearly not washed regularly), and how many people didn’t wear them properly (under the nose, gaps at the sides) almost every mask I saw was useless.

User67543989 · 07/08/2021 06:33

There are loads under the nose even now, what is the point, I could probably understand it when it was mandatory to wear a mask as you could probably say you were wearing one albeit not properly but not now, just don't wear one

leafygarden42 · 07/08/2021 06:42

Wowzers!! I'm amazed at how many posters are quite aggressive on this thread.

I wasn't trying to 'achieve' anything or make a point about class (ie M and S is posh) , I don't think people should or shouldn't be wearing masks. I am fully aware that it isn't a legal requirement () for spelling it out over and over even though i wrote that in the original post) And no - I don't want a Blue Peter Badge - thanks all the same.

Plus - if it is so annoying and awful that someone has started a thread about masks -again - why come and post on that thread? Just hide it = top tip.

The 'point' of my thread was purely observational out of interest. And as some have said - mask wearing does vary as to which area you're in.

@frozendaisy

What??? Is Tesco posh? That's news in itself.

OP posts:
leafygarden42 · 07/08/2021 06:45

And if life is so short - why are you posting about it? Is it just to have a little dig at someone you've never met - cheers for that

Interesting that in Waitrose virtually all staff and shoppers were. Different demographic I guess.
