and noticed that very few people are wearing masks. I know you don't have to etc etc but I thought that these shops were 'encouraging' people to wear them.

In M and S out of around 12 staff that I saw, only one was wearing a mask.

I felt like a bit of a weirdo for wearing one Confused -

As others have said what’s the point to this thread ?

It's like being back at school on Mumsnet - that comment is exactly like my old history teacher - 'And what is the point of your comment?'

I have explained above - and what was the point of your post? I wasn't counting - it was a rough estimate - and it didn't occupy my thoughts all day and for evermore - which is why I'm only looking at this thread this morning. Get back to your important shopping and incredibly busy life, as you're obviously more important than everyone else.

I hear OP.

I was still wearing one but I've decided to stop now. So few people are wearing them around here now and I refuse to be the only muggins "protecting others".

PopcornMuncher · 07/08/2021 07:59

I have to wear one all day for work and I hate it so I'm glad not to have to wear one to go into shops any more.

DH went into a shop yesterday and they weren't allowing people in without masks. He had a mask on him so put it on but a woman came in who didnt have one so they made her wait outside and they brought her order to her

AbsolutelyPatsy · 07/08/2021 08:54

dont feel like a weirdo wearing one folks,

you are doing a good job protecting others and yourself.
you have to wear one on public transport, you are encouraged to wear one in the shops,
i cannot understand those who chose not to

Sillysop92 · 07/08/2021 09:38

My teenagers have decided not to wear them anymore except where it is mandated. It’s up to them. I’m still wearing one but thinking why I am bothering.

Good. That’s the way it should be; it is weird.

This makes me laugh. My sister went with me and my kids to Smyths toy store. She had covid with no symptoms 10 days prior. On the day of her freedom, she started with a runny nose. Nothing else, just runny nose like hay fever. As our local Smyths is very busy on weekends she decided to wear a mask. Not to protect herself, but others just in case. Anyway, in the store approximately 20% were wearing a mask. In the whole store, no one seemed to care that she was wearing a mask other than this young, loud and scruffy looking couple. They walked past her and called her a weirdo. I found this hilarious. It’s always the “weirdos” that call anyone who looks different to them weirdos. She only wore it to protect other shoppers 🤦‍♀️ We’ve all had it and are double jabbed so it’s not about protecting us. Also, even if she chose to wear a mask for whatever reason, what has that got to do with others? I really don’t understand this mindset. It’s like taking offence if someone chose to wear their hair a certain way or chose to wear a piece of clothing different to yours. It’s about tolerance and minding your own business.
PopcornMuncher · 07/08/2021 11:11

Because I hate them and it makes me feel uncomfortable and i already have to wear one 40 hours a week for work. I really don't believe the ones I wear make any difference anyway.

I was at a football game last week. Attendance around 1.5k. Very few masks. I would say around 97% - 98% were not wearing them

That's fine, @AbsolutelyPatsy. You don't have to "understand". You just have to accept that in England, they legally don't have to.
AbsolutelyPatsy · 07/08/2021 12:04

seems idiotic not to wear one when advised.
be a rule breaker, dont give a toss about others.

AbsolutelyPatsy · 07/08/2021 12:05

not a rule breaker though i mean, in the shops you dont have to.

bolshy not to wear one imo

PopcornMuncher · 07/08/2021 12:23

Bolshy not to do something that is not against the rules? Bloody covid police are ridiculous now Hmm

AbsolutelyPatsy · 07/08/2021 12:27

you are advised to wear a mask due to bolshy folk not wanting to,
it is beyond me
total I'm alright Jack attitude - i am not covid police, just disappointed in the selfish approaches, totally self centered

Againstmachine · 07/08/2021 12:40

To all the people saying selfish ect,. Did you wear a mask before covid, because if not you were being selfish then.

It's only since covid this thing has come in where we must protect others at all costs, when previously most didn't give a toss about others.

PopcornMuncher · 07/08/2021 12:52

Its you who is the selfish one. Insisting everyone does what you want and calling them bolshy and selfish if you don't get your own way Hmm

Againstmachine · 07/08/2021 12:56

I don't understand how someone without a mask wandering about is any way being bolshy, wanting everyone to do what you want and calling them names is being bolshy.

Sleepyquest · 07/08/2021 13:02

I've just been in Sainsburys and I'd say 50% wearing masks. The ones that weren't were mainly OAPs, which has pissed me off somewhat. We stayed at home for months on end to protect them and now they can't offer us the same courtesy. I'm preggo and hormonal and fe duo with the selfishness

thriftyhen · 07/08/2021 13:04

I think it must be area dependent as I would say that virtually everyone is still wearing a mask here; rural south west, and we've probably had the lowest incidence of Covid throughout.

The government told us to stay at home to protect others and as far as I remember no OAP told us to do that. Good on them for realising that life is for living and enjoying what they have left. I admire them for realising that and getting on with it and wish some younger low risk adults got that other things can and will most likely kill them.

Of fuck off. It’s not weird to do something we’ve until recently been mandated to do and which saves other people’s lives.

just to be clear - they have probably been staying at home during the same period - did you work during lockdown, did you wfh on full pay, did you get 80% furlough while at home . Lockdown was to save the NHS from being overwhelmed by sick/dying people but I am sure your pregnancy care etc has been absolutely fine. You think all OAPs should wear masks (not illegal) for the rest of their lives to protect YOU because otherwise they are being selfish. Did you check the age of those not wearing masks and give them a hard stare. How dare they Shock
Odisia · 07/08/2021 13:22

I went to my local M&S last Saturday. I'd say around 90% of people were wearing masks. I was surprised it was so many.
I went in again yesterday and it had completely changed. I'd say less than 20% were wearing them.
People adapt quickly to change.

Care if you wear one or not.

Why is it weird? We're in a pandemic surely it makes sense to do something so easy to stop the spread?
