and noticed that very few people are wearing masks. I know you don't have to etc etc but I thought that these shops were 'encouraging' people to wear them.

In M and S out of around 12 staff that I saw, only one was wearing a mask.

I felt like a bit of a weirdo for wearing one Confused -

I'm in booths and everyone has one on. I'm still wearing FFP2 masks

Againstmachine · 06/08/2021 16:57

Cool story, when I go in a shop I actually shop, rather than count how many are wearing masks, it's a bizzare mumsnet quirk.

Ostryga · 06/08/2021 16:58

Plenty still wearing a mask in Norfolk. Definitely in a minority if you don’t wear one.

I’ll keep wearing mine because my eyes are my best feature and it hides my chins Grin

FlorallyBankrupt · 06/08/2021 17:00

I continue to wear one just because its not really a major hardship for me (I got the hang of avoiding getting my glasses steamed up), and if it helps a few more vulnerable or anxious people feel safer from me then I'm OK with that. I haven't had my 2nd dose yet.

I'm at home in Lincolnshire too @DoctorSnortles, I think more are wearing them here than not.

NearlyAlwaysInsane · 06/08/2021 17:00

Most people in the town where I live wear one, in shops and supermarkets.

pinkcircustop · 06/08/2021 17:02

@firealarmhell Because wearing masks is not normal. It was a (useless) temporary measure when we panicked during a pandemic.

LubaLuca · 06/08/2021 17:05

I went in Home Bargains this morning and I think all of the shoppers (including myself) had one on, but none of the staff did. I don't care any more, and I feel like we all need to stop monitoring each other. I'm boring myself by making a mental note of things that I can't control and more than likely won't be affected by.

warmandtoasty2day · 06/08/2021 17:05

i wear one in shops and on public transport. i'm not bothered if other people think i'm strange for doing so.
Everyone to their own.

Cheshirewife · 06/08/2021 17:07

@pinkcircustop No offence but I might listen to those a bit more qualified…

Just went to local Waitrose and everyone still wearing.

Good. That’s the way it should be; it is weird.

It’s not weird at all. It’s entirely sensible, particularly if they are CEV and have minimal antibodies. People have a right to attempt to protect themselves without being judged by people like you.
Princesspickle777 · 06/08/2021 17:07

I’d say about 90% of people in my area are still wearing masks from what I’ve seen when in the supermarkets. I’m certainly still continuing too.

SpeakingFranglais · 06/08/2021 17:08

Literally just walked out of Tesco 20 mins ago, went to Lidl at 2pm and Morrisons this morning. Around 90% mask wearers staff and customers.

West Yorkshire.

Wishes2020 · 06/08/2021 17:12

I felt initially guilty then I felt slightly liberated - shopping without a mask for the first time in 13 months!

I’ve heard it all now!

ledesertsacre · 06/08/2021 17:13

@PiddleOfPuppies

What is it with post after post after post about "nobody is wearing masks"?! It's not a legal requirement. You can wear one if you want, equally you don't have to wear one if you don't want to. It's the same with vaccination, taking your shoes off inside the house and calling your child a hyphenated name - all down to personal preference.
Because it's a change? Because it's not the same everywhere? It doesn't seem that hard to think of reasons for the posts, does it?
HarrietSchulenberg · 06/08/2021 17:14

Masks in Sainsbury's and small shops in town here, fewer masks worn in Tesco and Home Bargains, and hardly any in B&M.

Some of us don't need to concentrate that hard when we shop and are capable of also noticing our surroundings. I don't think that's a bizarre mumsnet thing.

Three supermarkets in one day! I’m scared to ask how many times you go in a week? Grin
WeatherwaxOn · 06/08/2021 17:17

Local co-op yesterday still had plenty of customers and staff in masks and sifns still up asking people to wear them if they can.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 06/08/2021 17:19

I still wear mine, as do I really half of people in shops.

I'm in and out of other people's offices all day. It seems polite to do so and I will continue to do so (whilst my cold sore remains) until all covid notices are removed from doors.

ginjenny · 06/08/2021 17:19

I went for a hospital appointment on Tuesday and saw quite a few patients without masks on! All the staff were wearing them though!

Well that's mean, rejoicing in somebody's discomfort. It's strange to be so devoid of empathy.
TeenMinusTests · 06/08/2021 17:20

Probably about 90% still in masks in our Waitrose today.

mustlovegin · 06/08/2021 17:21

Most people wear masks when going into shops here. Shop staff is 50/50 I would say. Almost no one is wearing them while walking on the street though.

Jasmine11 · 06/08/2021 17:23

Must be your local area OP - I was in M&S today and Tesco yesterday (SW London) and I'd say around 90% of shoppers and 100% staff were wearing masks. However I did pop into Primark on New Oxford St earlier on in the week and hardly anyone (customers that is) were wearing masks.

bunnybuggs · 06/08/2021 17:23

today I went to the library, sainsburys and a charity shop - walking between them. Car park - no mask on (some people just out of the supermarkets still had masks on. I went round sainsburys without mask - felt a bit of a minority. Noticed that the spacer bars were back at the checkout.
Went to the library - sanitised hands on entry but no mask - everyone else in (all 3 of them) wearing masks.
Final call - at the charity shop - as it was a small shop and run by volunteers I wore a mask for a 10 minute visit.
I saw people walking along the street wearing masks, I saw someone on a bicycle wearing a mask - I had some looks but carried on regardless. We need to continue being sensible but try to ditch the masks - if you can and you feel comfortable doing so.
