and noticed that very few people are wearing masks. I know you don't have to etc etc but I thought that these shops were 'encouraging' people to wear them.

In M and S out of around 12 staff that I saw, only one was wearing a mask.

I felt like a bit of a weirdo for wearing one Confused -

Where I am mask adherence seems to be really high but seems to be reducing over time. I’m still wearing mine most of the time but I notice if I’m browsing I’m pulling it down for bit.

There’s a shop near me that’s still seems to be in major panic mode and tries to insist that people sanitise their hands though all that happens is that ppl wave a finger under the sensor and the sanitiser spills onto the floor. Reminds me of the stories of Japanese soldiers holed up in the jungle who still thought the war was on.

@PiddleOfPuppies

What is it with post after post after post about "nobody is wearing masks"?! It's not a legal requirement. You can wear one if you want, equally you don't have to wear one if you don't want to. It's the same with vaccination, taking your shoes off inside the house and calling your child a hyphenated name - all down to personal preference.
I think this is the latest fad. We've had essential shopping and various other things and now it's mask wearing
Standrewsschool · 06/08/2021 18:09

In my local supermarkets, 90% still wear a mask (kent).

whatthejiggeries · 06/08/2021 18:11

So glad we don't have to wear them any more

RampantIvy · 06/08/2021 18:12

The thing is, the virus doesn't observe the law. It does what it wants to do, and as I am risk averse I will continue to wear a mask, keep my distance from people, and observe strict hygiene. I am also double vaccinated.

MyrtlethePurpleTurtle · 06/08/2021 18:14

@Kcjay10

I was happy to keep wearing them but I'm unlikely to bother for much longer because factually it is completely useless unless the vast majority do it! A handful still adhering does nothing!
Exactly!
Mummyoflittledragon · 06/08/2021 18:15

Staff in Home bargains and local Tesco not wearing masks anymore. Dd refusing to wear them. I still am.

atlastifoundit · 06/08/2021 18:20

Round here I reckon it is about 90% of customers (including me), and 80% of staff. Many of the staff are on their own behind a screen anyway, so I can understand why they have decided not to wear one.

Not been to any other buildings open to the public, so can't comment on those.

LookdeepintotheParka · 06/08/2021 18:24

I still really don't understand why they didn't link the vaccine rollout with the changes over mask wearing?

Surely we should all (other than those exempt) be continuing to wear them until everyone is double vaccinated? Plus they still haven't vaccinated vulnerable children under 18 yet which is why I'm continuing to wear one.

user1469770863 · 06/08/2021 18:25

in Wales, where it's still law, this is not the case. Have just got home from M&S in Merthyr Tydfil and there was no-one maskless.

Redwinestillfine · 06/08/2021 18:26

Mist people still wearing them in supermarkets here and about 50% in smaller shops.

LookdeepintotheParka · 06/08/2021 18:27

Meant to add add that locally most people still wearing masks in shops. Of those that aren't I don't see a huge pattern of demographics - complete mixture of young and old (mostly I don't really notice though!!)

NewNameADayKeepsSpiesAtBay · 06/08/2021 18:28

On holiday in Norfolk I’d say definitely more people are wearing than not. Ranging from 55-75% of people wearing depending where we’ve been. Mix of all ages too. And that includes shops as well as museums etc. Also many places have signs requesting masks still to be worn.

RampantIvy · 06/08/2021 18:30

I suspect that retail staff would be delighted to ditch masks. When I go to Tesco I only need to wear my mask for the duration of my shopping. Imagine having to wear a mask for an 8 hour shift.

Tumbleweed101 · 06/08/2021 18:31

I've been exposed to known cases of covid a couple times recently and haven't caught it myself. I'm now feeling far more confident in the vaccines as a coworker exposed to same case who isn't vaccinated caught it.

Tumbleweed101 · 06/08/2021 18:31

Therefore I feel more confident being without a mask and for those around me not to wear them.

AbsolutelyPatsy · 06/08/2021 18:34

some people on the train and the bus today, i thought how selfish, then when i was on my own i took mine off and didnt see someone get on the bus, eventually i did

AbsolutelyPatsy · 06/08/2021 18:35

quite bizarre in tesco to see people without masks despite the sign saying wear a mask!

Jaxhog · 06/08/2021 18:37

They can 'encourage' me to wear one in person but if they do that I won't be returning to spend my money.

Well if they don't 'encourage you' and you don't wear one, I won't be returning to spend my money there either.

BeeDavis · 06/08/2021 18:37

What is the point of posts like this? Do you want a Blue Peter badge for wearing your mask? At the end of the day it’s not law anymore so I don’t understand why you’re jumping on here to post about it.

comebacksunshines · 06/08/2021 18:38

Went in Aldi and home bargains earlier in week, I was in minority wearing a mask. In Aldi it was me an one other female customer wearing one.
M&S different story about 90% of people wearing masks.

This.
DiscoDown21 · 06/08/2021 18:40

High hot spot area and I was surprised at how many are still wearing masks tbh ( I wear mine on buses/supermarket etc)

Also medical facilities are absolutely places you should please be wearing a mask. We deal with lots of vulnerable people some of who aren’t vaccinated for medical reasons. It’s a small ask for a short amount of time. Sick of arguing with people ‘Boris says we don’t need one now’ Hmm… Boris isn’t working in the hospital so just put one on here please.

Stuffin · 06/08/2021 18:41

That's fine. I have been avoiding shops like M&S when it was mandatory because I didn't want to wear one. Now it isn't and people don't have to wear one then you have the choice not to shop anywhere that lets maskless people in.
