Been shopping this afternoon and was so nice albeit really strange to not wear my mask! I hesitated going in at first because it felt like I'd forgotten something!

If you've been out today, what did you find was the general consensus of people around you either wearing or not wearing masks?

I actually didn't see anyone in a mask which surprised me as I thought quite a lot would still wear them!

@londonmummy1966

Oxford St this morning - everyone on the tube in masks as still required - John Lewis the main contingent not in masks were members of staff rather than shoppers. Most other shops pretty well everyone was in a mask. Glad people are being sensible.
I just think if you can, then why not? However if you've been avoiding shops because you can't stand the idea of wearing masks, then take advantage now and go for it!

Been no major changes for me. Took DD swimming (lessons we do regularly) first thing and everyone was a bit confused and didn't seem to know what we were allowed to do. Been to a supermarket and still wore my make and I would say most other people were still wearing theirs too.

Just popped to Asda. 99% of people still had their mask on. Very happy to report.

WeWantAMackerelNotASprat · 19/07/2021 18:08

Thankfully most people are wearing masks here. Nice to know people are being considerate and keeping me safe! I'll continue to wear one to keep others safe too

I’ve spent most of today on public transport. At the station this morning, I counted 37 people on the (outdoor) platform. Only 3 were wearing a mask, and two of those were on their chins.

I didn’t wear a mask, but put one on in a lift shared with another family, and later on the train when more people got on. Despite the scant and dubious evidence of any significant benefits, it seemed the polite thing to do 🤷‍♀️

Later in Waitrose, almost everyone was wearing them.

I’ve just had an email from our director of public health, quoting some ONS research that only 64% plan to continue wearing masks. So I guess their poll group didn’t include many Mumsnetters 🤔

Northern city. Went to several shops in the city centre and Sainsbury’s. In all shops I’d say about 90% of people were wearing masks, compared to probably about 95% last week.

I did notice that Sainsbury’s had taken down all their posters about face coverings, despite announcing publicly that they would still ‘encourage’ it.

PrincessNutNuts · 19/07/2021 18:13

Everyone is still masked up round here.

Our local shops, hairdressers, cafes, pubs etc all have signs in the window that say:

"THANK YOU FOR WEARING A MASK. IT KEEPS OUR BUSINESS OPEN"

Or words to that effect.

Gingerbeerfear · 19/07/2021 18:14

I had to go to the supermarket for one of my end of life clients. Wore my mask. About 70 percent in the shop were wearing them. I got most twitchy at the tills with people getting close to grab things off shelves, piling stuff in the conveyor close behind me. I didn’t like it.

CantRememberHoliday · 19/07/2021 18:15

I went into 8 shops and the only person I saw without a mask was 1 M&S worker.

BertiesShoes · 19/07/2021 18:15

I went to a local but smallish retail outlet - probably 60% wearing them walking around the mall area and in shops. Fairly quiet as expected for a Monday morning, no SD markers outside shops as there has been up to now.

Two out of 3 till assistants in M&S didn’t wear one, one of those then walked around the store without one. The third till assistant had hers around her jaw. There was no queueing or gel going in.

Body shop had gel available but no one making it mandatory. Assistants wearing masks. I wore mine in there as it’s quite a small shop, also at the till in M&S but not walking around.

Home Bargains, most store assistants had them on and a reasonable amount (but by no means all) of customers. Again, I wore mine queuing for and at the till not whilst walking around but did SD.

maddiemookins16mum · 19/07/2021 18:17

I popped to our local Tesco express for milk enroute to the office. 7.30am.
Not a mask in sight (except mine).

Greyhair59 · 19/07/2021 18:19

Went to big Sainsbury. Very quiet. About 30 customers, 3 of us not wearing masks. Noone commented.

wendz86 · 19/07/2021 18:19

Slightly less wearing them in shops but at least 75% wearing them.

Less parents at school wearing them and pretty much none during sports day but was outside.

Fuckinellitsme · 19/07/2021 18:19

DD has just got back from Aldi. She said it was 50/50 masks/no masks but what was really noticeable was some in masks were tutting and eye rolling at those not, and some not in masks were giggling and calling masked people sheep. The security guard told two women to leave while she was in the queue for doing the latter.

Not sure why people can't just grow the fuck up, tbh.

Hillary17 · 19/07/2021 18:19

I’m still wearing a mask most places. Popped to the shop - happy to see most people were also wearing theirs. Same at the gym. A few people acting as though they’ve won by not wearing one Hmm whatever makes you feel safest….

brittleheadgirl · 19/07/2021 18:20

@OceanTurtles

*Yep, I love it when pedestrians risk my safety when I'm driving Absolute madness, choosing to step into the road to avoid passing a stranger too closely!! Jeez, I bloody despair!*

Yes because people will step in front of a moving car in the road. The poster clearly meant when the road was clear.

Tired of most people turning a situation in to all about them 🥱.

No they didn't Confused Such hysteria, do calm down
XenoBitch · 19/07/2021 18:21

I went to Lidl. Probably 60% of people wearing masks... I noted a lot of elderly were not wearing them.
Was nice to see more faces tbh.

underneaththeash · 19/07/2021 18:22

No-one wearing a mask in the gym today - including staff. Mask wearing was daft there as it was only walking through the cafe area where anyone wore them.

Supermarket (Waitrose) only me and a couple of staff members not wearing.

Golf driving range probably 50/50

TheDogsMother · 19/07/2021 18:23

Everyone in the Local Co-op and hardware store was wearing them.

MsAwesomeDragon · 19/07/2021 18:23

I've only been to one shop today and everyone was wearing a mask, including me and my 12yo DD. It didn't really feel like anything had changed, which I quite liked.

Lairymary · 19/07/2021 18:23

Large Tesco this morning. About 10% customers not wearing masks and 50% employees not wearing masks. I didn't wear a mask until I got to the scan and shop checkout as it's a bit confined and I needed to talk to an assistant so out of respect I put one on. I also made sure I socially distanced myself even more than before.

Misspacorabanne · 19/07/2021 18:23

I do think it's a bit selfish not wearing a mask. I know we don't have to by law now, but I don't see it as a huge inconvenience to put one on before going in a shop, but I also thought, you wear a mask to protect others, not
so much yourself, so now people that feel comfortable have ditched them, leaving people who are more anxious about covid wearing them, when they don't even protect the wearer do they? It doesn't make sense, now the mask wearers are more at risk of covid and those without a mask are more protected! I honestly think the rules on masks shouldn't have be relaxed just yet.

Gertie75 · 19/07/2021 18:24

I went to the supermarket at 9 am and the vast majority had masks on, I didn't and there were a few staff wearing them as chin hammocks.

Chillychangchoo · 19/07/2021 18:24

Im in the Midlands. Honestly around 50/50 today in the supermarket. 0 in masks in Greggs and my local nisa. 0 in the Harvester restaurant.

Elphame · 19/07/2021 18:24

Waitrose this morning. About 2/3rds of the staff wearing masks and I saw a handful of other customers without masks.

It was very quiet though as it usually is on a Monday morning. All the social distancing markings were still on the floor.
