Been shopping this afternoon and was so nice albeit really strange to not wear my mask! I hesitated going in at first because it felt like I'd forgotten something!

If you've been out today, what did you find was the general consensus of people around you either wearing or not wearing masks?

I actually didn't see anyone in a mask which surprised me as I thought quite a lot would still wear them!

Bought myself a flower lanyard and just used that

Well granted masks don’t have a massive impact on transmission of Covid - between 10 and 25% reduction according to one report I read today of recent findings. That’s not great, but it is somewhat helpful - so long as a large proportion of people do it.

Sunflower lanyards, otoh, have zero effect on reducing transmission. They are a concession to those who, for physical or psychological reasons, find wearing a mask extremely difficult. It is understood that those people are not able to take part in this particular way of limiting transmission.

You, if I’ve understood your post correctly, are perfectly capable of wearing a mask without undue physical or psychological distress. You are choosing not to. So, yes, you are being selfish.

I went to Sainsbury's this morning. Nearly every customer had a mask on. All but 2 employees had no masks.

I was expecting the exact opposite! Especially as we are wearing masks "to protect retail employees" who are exposed all day.

They were also removing the barriers between the queue areas whilst I was there.

Spodge · 19/07/2021 17:31

I've only been out for a takeaway Starbucks. Everyone except me was wearing a mask (staff included).

OceanTurtles · 19/07/2021 17:31

Yep, I love it when pedestrians risk my safety when I'm driving Absolute madness, choosing to step into the road to avoid passing a stranger too closely!!
Jeez, I bloody despair!

Yes because people will step in front of a moving car in the road. The poster clearly meant when the road was clear.

Tired of most people turning a situation in to all about them 🥱.

Palmtreebythesea · 19/07/2021 17:32

Central London all day, most people have masks on

I’m not sure there is any correlation between something being legal and therefore not selfish. There are many things which are not illegal but which are definitely selfish.

Whilst I don’t agree with people insulting others, I cannot agree there is any valid argument that just because something is not mandated by law then this means that that behaviour is acceptable in all circumstances.

My own view is that those who can wear a mask but chose not to in crowded spaces are making a selfish decision because they are putting their own comfort above increasing the risk to others. That is the definition of selfish surely?

If people don’t want to wear a mask then they don’t have to. However, I don’t understand why do some people expect others not to find this behaviour selfish? You have freedom of choice but it is unreasonable to expect to have freedom from consequences. One of those consequences is other people thinking you are selfish.

If you are comfortable with your decision then this shouldn’t matter though should it?

I was in the M&S food Hall in Durham, this morning, and the only people not wearing masks were staff who were completely behind screens, close to a wall, in the clothing department. Customers and staff in the foodhall, all wore masks.

There have been times when I've overheated or got stressed out by my glasses constantly misting to the point I can't see and I will probably temporarily remove my mask in those situations because social distancing is hard when you're scraping someone up who has passed out or tripped but I'm fine with keeping mine on, for now.

My autistic 17 year old has barely left the house for 18 months and that has not been good for his physical health. Mandatory mask wearing in enclosed spaces has not helped that - he is exempt but hates the thought of being challenged. I'm hoping that he feels a bit less imprisoned, now. He can't walk far, any more, and that's a bigger worry than Covid.

MichonnesBBF · 19/07/2021 17:33

Masks are still being worn round where I live, North East.

ChloeCrocodile · 19/07/2021 17:33

I went to the local coop without a mask today. Staff were wearing them on the shop floor but not behind the counter. About 50% of customers were wearing them.

I’m not wearing one in a shop as contact there is transitory so low risk. I keep my distance from others and I’m double vaxxed. However, I probably would wear one if I ever used public transport though, because the contact is sustained and much closer than in a shop.

Eaumyword · 19/07/2021 17:33

E Midlands.
Delighted to see 80% of city centre shoppers wearing masks indoors and keeping distance and sanitising hands. It felt as if people were being courteous towards each other.

TheTurn0fTheScrew · 19/07/2021 17:34

Tesco express - half the customers in mask. M&S Simply Food : most in masks.

332gogogo · 19/07/2021 17:36

@Florelei

Gosh have people been wearing them in your gymShock

DeePlume · 19/07/2021 17:36

I've been at work in a busy shop today and I only saw 4 people not wearing masks.

YouLikeTheBadOnesToo · 19/07/2021 17:37

I’m in the north east and been to a supermarket and a cafe. I don’t think I noticed anyone without a mask.

joystir59 · 19/07/2021 17:37

About 20%of people wearing masks in and around our town centre shops today, including me.

AnyFucker · 19/07/2021 17:37

Asda shopping, about 75% people masked. I didn’t.

Had my eyes tested…asked to wear a mask and understand it is close contact so agreed willingly

Busy Petrol station/Co op. Just a couple of masks in use.

I can deal with being called selfish, I just find it boring at this stage. But no one has the right to challenge anyone not wearing a mask.
iwishiwasonhol · 19/07/2021 17:39

i work in a large supermarket ,most staff still wearing them ,and more customers than ever wearing them today ,NE area with the highest covid rates currently ,was pleanstly surprised

gogohm · 19/07/2021 17:40

Masks mostly on except 20-30 year olds in lidl who were being stared at

ihatefacemasks · 19/07/2021 17:42

I went to Waitrose, and appeared to be the only person not wearing a face mask.

AnotherDayAnotherCake · 19/07/2021 17:42

Went to B&Q, about half of the staff were wearing their masks.
The vast majority of customers were wearing one.
Went to Costa after, no change. All staff and customers wearing them until they sat at their tables.
Think it will be a while before I take mine off.

Tamrastarr · 19/07/2021 17:42

I totally forgot. Got half way to the post office and realised I had forgotten my mask, so I walked all the way back again. Got to post office and no one was wearing a mask!

Sadless · 19/07/2021 17:42

Went vets and most wearing them appart from a couple of older ladies like in 70s maybe they had a reason not to don't know.
