If you've been out today what has been the general consensus?

Been shopping this afternoon and was so nice albeit really strange to not wear my mask! I hesitated going in at first because it felt like I'd forgotten something!

If you've been out today, what did you find was the general consensus of people around you either wearing or not wearing masks?

I actually didn't see anyone in a mask which surprised me as I thought quite a lot would still wear them!

Back from Waitrose, everyone wearing them.

Lots of local shops and hairdressers saying they will keep on doing exactly the same as before - they don't want to have to close because their staff are ill, and as furlough is coming to an end, people aren't going to get paid if the shops are shut.

ohfook · 19/07/2021 18:26

Also in NE everywhere I've been people, myself included, are still wearing them. As a poster mentioned though our cases are very high and it just feels right for the people having to work in the shops etc if it's something I can do to make them feel a bit less worried then it's no skin off my nose to do it.

twoofusburningmatches · 19/07/2021 18:29

I went to several shops today - boots, large supermarket, H&M etc - and to the library. Was busy enough and saw a lot of people, but only two were not wearing a mask. The staff in Costa weren’t wearing them either but all customers were while queuing (and all staff everywhere else I went were also wearing them).

Tryouts2579 · 19/07/2021 18:29

@Waxonwaxoff0 - what do you mean nobody has the right not to challenge someone wearing a mask? If you mean act aggressively towards them then I would agree with you but otherwise people absolutely have the right to politely ask someone to wear a mask. Equally the person being asked to wear one can politely refuse.

One of the joys of living in a free society!

Tryouts2579 · 19/07/2021 18:30

I think I included too many negatives there - I hope you can understand what I mean!

Lulu1919 · 19/07/2021 18:31

Big Tesco at 9am
90% customers wearing masks
Less than 50% of staff wearing masks

I wore mine

Whenthedealgoesdown · 19/07/2021 18:34

I went to the dentist, the majority were wearing masks in waiting room, on the way I looked into the small independent shops and general small shops like chain estate agents, not one person wearing a mask including those behind counters, also large independent chemist and post office, 2 women walked out without masks, couldn't see inside properly. After dentist I walked past Wilko, from what I could see, probably about 70% wearing masks.

Carrotcakeforbreakfast · 19/07/2021 18:34

I mentioned on another thread today that I went into aldi and only saw about 5 people without them.
And to me they look exactly like the people you would expect not to wear a mask even before today. Smile

Blueskyemily · 19/07/2021 18:34

Everything seemed the same where I am.

I can't keep up with which shops allow you not to wear a mask and which ones "suggest" you wear one. I'm not actually sure what the rules are now at my children's school and nursery. So it's just easier to keep wearing them.

amylou8 · 19/07/2021 18:34

SE London. M&S 8/10, CEX 0/10, IKEA 6/10. Was lovely to be able to breath, to walk round without being shouted at for messing up some arbitrary one way system, and dispense your own ketchup with your meatballs!

Lipsandlashes · 19/07/2021 18:35

No one, including staff wearing a mask in Costa. Very few people wearing one in the supermarket

What does that mean?
Daisysway · 19/07/2021 18:36

Only 1 person in supermarket (Aldi) not wearing a mask.. Oddly enough his wife did wear a mask... So lovely to see people being responsible.

You mean poor, lower class, grubby types with the intellect of a crisp bag? Is that what you mean?
FlyingBattie · 19/07/2021 18:39

100% of people in my train carriage were masked.
Around 80% in Tesco I would say- about similar to last week really.

emmathedilemma · 19/07/2021 18:40

I’ve been on trains and in a supermarket and majority still wearing them. Most didn’t have them on on the station platform but it’s basically outside and it was a billion degrees hot.

Chillychangchoo · 19/07/2021 18:40

@Lipsandlashes

I think we all know what she meant.
I suspect a lot of people are still wearing them to conform but as the weeks go by they may feel more comfortable removing them. It’s still early days and most people care about what other people think of them and don’t want to be thought of as “the type of people you would typically not expect to be in a mask”. (Her words not mine).

Thankfully I don’t actually care what people think of me and I have my own mind so I’ll happily not wear one and feel okay about it.

HumbugWhale · 19/07/2021 18:42

On drive duty this morning I was amazed to see that probably 60% of the school (secondary) were putting on their masks as they entered the building. By last lesson this afternoon I'd say about 50% still had them on, despite the heat.
Dh said about 60% of parents were wearing them at primary school pick up/drop off too.

WouldBeGood · 19/07/2021 18:43

Great news from you @TheAntelope

treedragon · 19/07/2021 18:43

I have no idea as I will continue to shop online as I became a delivery convert back in March 2020. In terms of being out and about people need to keep their distance and wear a mask near me or stay away. That includes work and I have made that clear last week. I have no desire to catch covid from irresponsible people who want to gallivant about spreading it around because they cant bear to be away from the pub, nightclub, stupid holiday aircraft, cafes etc.

WouldBeGood · 19/07/2021 18:44

I cannot wait to go shopping for the day, but sadly I’m in Scotland 🙄

Figgygal · 19/07/2021 18:45

Supermarket earlier only 1 out of possibly 50 not wearing mask

At my kids swimming lesson now - been asked by venue to wear one, 7 adults in unventilated viewing area that’s a million degrees 4 wearing 3 not - very disappointing

I think name calling is uncalled for but just because there’s no legal imperative to do so it’s no less dangerous today to not wear a mask than it was yesterday - people can make a choice to very visually show whether they are concerned about others or not

Pogacar · 19/07/2021 18:46

I don’t think I’ve seen anyone in a mask anywhere today.

lap90 · 19/07/2021 18:47

Most people still wearing masks on public transport, in shops and in other enclosed spaces around my parts.

Pleasantly surprised at the number of people continuing to wear masks tbh.

Carrotcakeforbreakfast · 19/07/2021 18:47

Not at all grubby with the intellect of a crisp packet etc.

Just like people I would expect not to.
I know exactly what I mean but can't quite put my finger on it.

One was an older lady
One was in a couple she was wearing one, he wasn't.
