A good start to his tenure as Health Secretary. Sounds about right!

OP posts:
Abraxan · 17/07/2021 17:59

@swimlyn

So our new Health Secretary hasn’t got the brains to keep himself safe.

I despair! Sad

I mean I don't like this government but that is pretty unfair!

Anyone can catch Covid even if they follow all the rules.

I did. It wasn't because I'm stupid and ignored the rules. I'm cv and was being as careful as I could be within the rules . But once you are out of your home and mixing with others, even from a distance, you are at risk of catching it.

Seriously, do some people truest believe that only those not following rules catch Covid??!!

No, not at all. But it doesn't make a mockery of 'do your own risk assesments' line that keeps being aimed at the vulnerable group.

Practicing what he teaches. Herd immunity makes progress.

LazyViper · 17/07/2021 19:33

Why would he be faking it? It’s embarrassing for him, if anything. He’s been one of the main ministers pushing a more lax approach. It’s such irony that he then caught it himself.

I thought that, I can't imagine he'd want to pretend. Unless he fancies 10 days in bed I suppose.
sleepwouldbenice · 17/07/2021 19:53

Still not aware he had any of the formal symptoms
Still making something out of nothing

Whenthedealgoesdown · 17/07/2021 20:02

He had a lengthy meeting with Boris apparently on Friday and I am somewhat smiling inwardly that some of the cabinet will miss the first bit of the Parliament recess if pinged or named contact though knowing them there will be some trial to partake in

Of course you can keep yourself safe in a Global Pandemic.

I seem to recall that there are some rules that the government has made.

Siepie · 17/07/2021 20:15

I don't understand why people think this could lead to a change in policy for Monday.

The government are hoping that the number of vaccinated people will stop hospitals becoming overwhelmed, but they have been open about the fact that case numbers will rise. They know that some vaccinated people still get covid. I don't see why a vaccinated man getting covid (and not going to hospital) would change anything.

You forget that the rules apply to US not them.

They are special.

RedMarauder · 17/07/2021 20:48

@LemonWeb download the Covid Zoe App and start daily logging.

If you ever feel out of sorts and put that in then you will get an email the later that night/early the next day telling to go and get a PCR test. This is because it is scientific research that helps pick up new symptoms.

I've had two even though I knew I had a cold.

RedMarauder · 17/07/2021 20:52

@greenzeppelin

Yes he felt unwell and took a lateral flow even though the advice e has always been if you have symptoms you don't use a lateral flow you get a PCR.

One rule for them though, another for us plea.

The official symptoms the UK government recognises are different from what WHO, loads of other countries, GPs in the UK and even UK scientific research on the Zoe App has as symptoms.

So him taking a lateral flow means he's following UK government advice even though the advice is outdated.

FromTheAshes · 18/07/2021 05:32

How on earth did he manage to get his pcr results back less that 12 hours after taking the test?

essexgirl58 · 18/07/2021 06:02

Someone at work said to me that they are not having the first or the second jab because they do not belive they work and you get symptoms from the jabs so why put your body through that when at the end of the day you catch covid anyway.

TerritorialPissings · 18/07/2021 06:56

There has been some awful comments on this thread…

They do work. They just don't cut it out 100%. Your risk of hospitalisation is effectively reduced.
neveradullmoment99 · 18/07/2021 06:58

If they didn't work, hospitalisation and deaths would have been off the scale right now. They are wrong.

Pixxie7 · 18/07/2021 06:59

He has also been in contact with the PM and other cabinet ministers so they may have to self isolate as well.

Egghead68 · 18/07/2021 07:04

@ResIpsaLoquiturInterAlia

I wish anyone with Covid a full recovery irrespective of vaccination status. This is an inconvenience for anyone in healthcare.

I am however inquisitive as to whether all the administered vaccines have different efficacy against the current evolving variants and importantly if there is more vaccine escape.

I understand vaccination would not prevent infection with spike protein protection and onwards mutating spread but it would hopefully prevent fatalities and long Covid disabilities compared to natural unvaccinated infected and recovered spike protein and T cell immunity. I welcome a virologist learned expert opinion on my lay person suggestion here as I may well be slightly misinterpreting the science.

The UK say that the AZ is 60% effective against symptomatic disease and the Pfizer 88% (although Israel found the Pfizer was 64%).

There is no evidence either vaccine reduces the likelihood of long covid, if you get infected.

Both vaccines are around 90%+ effective against preventing death in healthy people, although this probably wanes with time.

Whenthedealgoesdown · 18/07/2021 07:05

Be interesting to see what happens with the isolation as Gove managed to escape it after Portugal as he was on a pilot study for daily testing. Wouldn't be surprised if they were all on a study

Whenthedealgoesdown · 18/07/2021 07:08

Gove on a pilot scheme has just been mentioned on the BBC, probably setting the scene...

jelly79 · 18/07/2021 07:40

His speech about testing positive makes me cringe. Sounds like he is reading a bedtime story to really small children

I'm glad it is only mild impacts on his health, but perhaps the government will now start to change course on its response to the virus. Not that I am holding my breath.

ineedaholidaynow · 18/07/2021 08:52

The PM will not be isolating
