A good start to his tenure as Health Secretary. Sounds about right!

If he has had a positive LFT then he should isolate for 10 days regardless of negative PCR....two kids I know in this situation have been told by 119 that they have to continue isolation in the past couple of weeks. Their close contacts were allowed to stop isolating on the negative PCR, but not the child themselves.

So it will be interesting to see if the rules applying to plebs once again do not apply to the government.

ResIpsaLoquiturInterAlia · 17/07/2021 14:39

I wish anyone with Covid a full recovery irrespective of vaccination status. This is an inconvenience for anyone in healthcare.

I am however inquisitive as to whether all the administered vaccines have different efficacy against the current evolving variants and importantly if there is more vaccine escape.

I understand vaccination would not prevent infection with spike protein protection and onwards mutating spread but it would hopefully prevent fatalities and long Covid disabilities compared to natural unvaccinated infected and recovered spike protein and T cell immunity. I welcome a virologist learned expert opinion on my lay person suggestion here as I may well be slightly misinterpreting the science.

butterpuffed · 17/07/2021 14:41

It's totally safe, nothing to see here Ladies and Gentlemen

What does that mean ?

Nextlevelnonsense · 17/07/2021 14:42

@HmmmmmmInteresting

Anyone else sick of the word 'mild'?

He literally started with symptoms last night, so how can he come out with 'thankfully my symptoms are mild'?

I think he's just confirming that he isn't almost dead. The government are thrilled now when people get Covid, but aren't almost dead. We are pretty much instructed to follow suit now, surely?

Bozza got 'seriously almost dead' when we were absolutely needing to STAY AT HOME.
Times were different then.

neveradullmoment99 · 17/07/2021 14:42

@peridito

Am I the only one thinking this might be a con ?

So that on the one hand the gov endorse opening up ,but on the other are keen to stress that people still need to be careful ?

Which latter point this neatly underlines .

Because of course the outcome of this risky UK experiment in herd immunity/getting this wave over before winter is totally dependent on how the general public conduct themselves .

ABSOLUTELY so convenient,
Lindy2 · 17/07/2021 14:44

I think he was right to use a lateral flow if he didn't feel right. Almost certainly the PCR will also be positive as false positives are rare. It's false negatives that are the problem.

As he's double jabbed he should only have mild symptoms. However, as a PP said mild just means you don't need hospital treatment. You can still feel really rough (I love the rough as a badger's arse description) with it. I certainly did in January when I had it before I was vaccinated.

In a way I think feeling utter crap for a while with it might be a timely reality check for him.

GenderIsFigurativelyBollocks · 17/07/2021 14:44

Do people making "con/convenient" type comments believe he definitely does not have CV and is outright lying?

ineedaholidaynow · 17/07/2021 14:45

@Whiskycav should your child be going back to school on Monday if they don't have COVID but have D&V?

GenderIsFigurativelyBollocks · 17/07/2021 14:48

I think the key word here is "groggy" which could mean anything.

Unfortunately this dilutes the previous message of LFTs for non symptomatic tests and PCRs for symptoms.

I don't believe he is lying about having CV but I do believe the government would use it (and the case of any other high profile figure) as an opportunity to steer a previously held policy in another direction.

IndigoC · 17/07/2021 14:48

Very visible example of vaccine breakthrough. It’s always mild at the beginning, hoping it stays so for him.

I thought Boris looked unwell last week. I wonder…

Zilla1 · 17/07/2021 14:48

@RancidOldHag here over the last year, some 'mild' got admitted to acute depending on the patient, support required and their individual risk of deterioration as inpatient or on return home. Last year, several mild were returned home then admitted within a day.

Politicians seem to use it as a 'don't worry' signal or 'nothing to see here'. I don't want to catastrophise as for many, mild will mean what it says on the tin. Looking back, Boris had mild COVID until he didn't - perhaps lots of press management much like the 'in ITU but not ventilated'.

Even if not admitted, as you say, mild can feel 'mild' like a cold or like the 'proper' 'flu rough.

ancientgran · 17/07/2021 14:49

@MidnightMonsterMunch

I hadn’t realised being Secretary of State for Health made him immune.
Well if he has it and Matt Hancock had it then it is pretty obvious it doesn't.
Darbs76 · 17/07/2021 14:51

My son is positive and he tested with an LFT whilst waiting for the PCR and it was positive. By the next morning when we did the PCR test we knew he would be positive as he was coughing like mad and temp over 39

Notonthestairs · 17/07/2021 14:51

I wonder if this will push back the Social Care bill...

JinglingHellsBells · 17/07/2021 14:51

Let's all wish him well and a speedy recovery.

Pretty sickening to make political capital when anyone is ill regardless of which political tribe you belong to.

armanted · 17/07/2021 14:52

Skye say he had a meeting with Boris yesterday.

Whiskycav · 17/07/2021 14:52
@Whiskycav should your child be going back to school on Monday if they don't have COVID but have D&V?
Honestly. I don't know and the school doesn't.

He was sick Friday morning. And had the runs. He hasn't been sick since and the other end is fine now. Though he had belly ache this morning. But mild.

School called and said he needed a pcr test before he could come back. This was Friday. I asked about isolation etc and they didn't know.

The rules around sickness is 48 hours. So he can go back (unless it happens today) under the D&V rules.

But the school don't seem sure if he needs to isolate 10 day or not. Given D&V is also a delta symptom.

I was hoping to get he test back tomorrow and the email in as the school suggested. They have someone watching emails for covid related all weekend and who will advise.

In all honesty, I would just rather he didn't go back at all. I was just concentrating on getting the teat back, then tackling what that actually means. Because of its positive, worrying about the rest of it is pointless. This is his 3rd test in 4 weeks.

Notonthestairs · 17/07/2021 14:54

Bells - I think the question is whether they'll make political capital out of it not MNers. I don't think anyone has wished him ill.

HmmmmmmInteresting · 17/07/2021 14:56

I hadn’t realised being Secretary of State for Health made him immune.

"Well if he has it and Matt Hancock had it then it is pretty obvious it doesn't."

Indeed. On the contrary, it's a requirement of being Home Secretary- that's why SJ managed to avoid it for the last 18 months but contracted it three weeks into his tenure.

He can put it on his CV now

Hmm. Could this be a start to backtracking on England's Freedom Day?

Oh do go and find something more interesting to do with your day instead of making capital out of someone's illness.

This is just nasty.

Notonthestairs · 17/07/2021 14:59

He's had 18 months on the backbenches. They could work and vote from home. I guess now he's having to attend a lot more meetings in person.

Whiskycav · 17/07/2021 15:00

Oh do go and find something more interesting to do with your day instead of making capital out of someone's illness.

Thqtw doesn't even makes sense. Everyone's health has been capital.

How many people have vaccinations, is capital.

If someone you dies, it's been used as capital. If someone famous dies its been used as capital.

Boris getting ill was a bigger story than another, unknown man, his own age getting ill.

Its all capital and has been used as such, though out this whole thing.

Oh FFS.

I managed to get through 18 months and not contract covid- but did last week despite being double jabbed.

Notonthestairs · 17/07/2021 15:01

And that was a genuine question about the Social Care bill - I have a child that will need support as an adult and I'm keen to know what they have planned.
