A good start to his tenure as Health Secretary. Sounds about right!

OP posts:

So coming back from holidays etc is quite low risk

A fully vaccinated person only has to test after 2 days and not isolate after returning from an amber country from Monday. Not sure how you can say that they’re not a risk after that but unvaccinated person still is.

ResIpsaLoquiturInterAlia · 17/07/2021 16:47

I believe this high profile public official case has a number of significant connotations:

  1. Accuracy and reliability of lateral flow tests. I note my personal direct family experience with both false negatives and positives as subsequently confirmed by laboratory diagnostic PCR testing. For international mixing these do it yourself non witnessed lateral flow tests are not acceptable irrespective of scientific accuracy.
  1. As the recently installed current figurehead of health and social care - are there issues of politicking and performative gesture politics especially in relation to his verbal recommendations following his personal news notification to encourage vaccination offer take up and more frequent testing?
  1. Following from his encouragement of vaccination and testing - is this to be taken at face value that vaccination save lives from serious Covid disease but does not provide as much protection from infection and onwards transmission due to ever more evolving mutant variants in societal mixing progress but yet to be sequenced?
  1. Does this pubic personal notification suggest any u turn on full reopening or a forthcoming cycle of more restrictions in the near future as Indian Delta Johnson Covid or newer variant infections and severe hospitalisation cases rapidly increase daily in some/many localities?
  1. Perhaps despite the English (not UK wide) freedom of decriminalised choice - there may be more push for expected continued sensible pragmatic personal Covid risk mitigation measures of hygiene, hands, face, space, fresh air ventilation, testing and vaccination?

Just some thoughts to share…

Dustyboots · 17/07/2021 16:47

Timely infection (aka propaganda) I'd say, serving as an example to us all of the need to keep wearing masks etc.

This. Of course he hasn’t got Covid. Why do we believe them? Nothing they say is true. Ever.

Lemonmelonsun · 17/07/2021 16:51

@LemonWeb.

You are displaying symptoms, Andrew marr said he had your symptoms... Headache and sore throat please please don't go about your daily business and get a pcr!? Even Andrew marr said the current symptoms are different than what's listed.

Lemonmelonsun · 17/07/2021 16:52

The gov guidance doesn't move as quickly as the new varients symptoms

GenderIsFigurativelyBollocks · 17/07/2021 16:53

@Dustyboots I can't tell whether you are being sarcastic or not! If not, that's seriously quite a paranoid mindset (and I believe the government would "spin" someone's illness to gain political point so am quite cynical myself...)

I don't believe they are actually lying and he doesn't have CV though

noblegiraffe · 17/07/2021 16:56

Saj doesn't appear to me to be the sort of person who would enjoy admitting a weakness like having covid, so I can't imagine him lying about it.

Whiskycav · 17/07/2021 16:59

The lie I think SJ would make about being ill is if he was really poorly and made out he isn't that bad.

I don't think he is going to lie about having it or make out it's worse than it is.

But then I am basing that on the fact that he really wants Monday to go ahead.

KisstheTeapot14 · 17/07/2021 17:00

Why are we not isolating for Amber countries?

Why are we not isolating after close contact with a known very infectious variant?

I don't understand the logic - unless the logic is for the virus to be shared around, quickly but not too quickly eh?

And sod the 7 to 10 % (ONS statistic) who go on to develop long covid, or even organ damage.

Dustyboots · 17/07/2021 17:01

@GenderIsFigurativelyBollocks, I’m being serious.

Yes it’s propaganda, of course. Maybe I am now paranoid. Who could blame me? We’re living in very strange times and are lied to and manipulated constantly by our government.

jaundicedoutlook · 17/07/2021 17:11

An awful lot of tinfoil hats being donned on here today.

Anyway, trust SJ will be fine if he’s had both jabs, and can spend the next few days of isolation not telling us about his dad having been a bus driver.

DottyHarmer · 17/07/2021 17:16

I think you’ll find that’s Sadiq Khan, @jaundicedoutlook . Great attempt at being nasty, there.

noblegiraffe · 17/07/2021 17:16

Was his dad a bus driver? Wow, I didn't realise he was one of us.

noblegiraffe · 17/07/2021 17:25

Dotty Saj also has a bus driver dad.

bumbleymummy · 17/07/2021 17:34

*Why are we not isolating for Amber countries?

Why are we not isolating after close contact with a known very infectious variant?*

Because they need to reward the vaccinated and punish the unvaccinated/coerce them into having the vaccine. They don’t actually give a crap about the virus being able to spread.

sleepwouldbenice · 17/07/2021 17:43

@Lemonmelonsun

Sleep, the symptoms keep changing and the advice is slow to keep up
Agreed But under current guidance he right thing. Non official symptoms and took lateral flow test
theculture · 17/07/2021 17:44

To a PP ; I did google 'Boris Johnson sick' yesterday after seeing the photos of his levelling up speech - something did look a bit wrong (well wronger than usual)

Zandathepanda · 17/07/2021 17:45

He would have had to be a secondary school bus driver to impress me. Now that’s a job.

Abraxan · 17/07/2021 17:50

@RancidOldHag

He took an LFT when he felt 'groggy' on Friday, which he says is the right thing to do.

He seems to have missed all the previous messaging about LFTS being for asymtomatic checking. Or is this a drastic way of announcing a change in policy!?

Feeling groggy isn't an official symptom for pcr though. And you can use lft for symptoms but shouldn't rely on them as they aren't good enough. You should still get a pcr ASAP if you have symptoms. These days you are also told to use pcr to test if you are a close contact, etc.

Tbh daring to test using an lft really isn't an issue so long as he wasn't going to rely on it if he had an proper symptoms.

Maybe him testing positive after feeling groggy might make them consider the uselessness of having just three very restricted 'symptoms' listed.

jaundicedoutlook · 17/07/2021 17:52

There’s nothing more exhilarating than being proved right…

Abraxan · 17/07/2021 17:54

@Zilla1

Mild is an interesting word. Perhaps the political definition doesn't manage the clinical definition. I'm always surprised when patients don't realise how clinically bad they can be and still fall within a definition of mild.
Mine was classed as moderate. I ended up in hospital needing treatment but not ventilation/icu. Mine was for less typical issues.

Mild is basically not ending to be in hospital I think. But mild seems to cover a huge spectrum of severity in reality. At least now you can get hospital and medical treatment sooner than early in the pandemic.

peridito · 17/07/2021 17:54

I'm afraid I don't believe anything the gov says . If Javid did have CV and it suited the narrative to deny it we would just be told that he was isolating because someone in his family /close contact had symptoms .The facts will be twisted to suit the Gov 's purpose .

So I think it's significant that it's being reported that he has CV.

DottyHarmer · 17/07/2021 17:55

Blush ok, I was wrong!

PuzzledObserver · 17/07/2021 17:57

Zoe app is saying different symptoms for double jabbed people with headache, fatigue and sore throat being ahead of cough, fever of loss of taste or smell.

Are people assuming that SJ did something wrong (i.e. broke the rules) and that’s why he caught it? Because you can follow all the rules and still contract it - DH did in his care home job despite wearing a mask which is a step up from the blue surgical ones (though not full FFP3) and other PPE as instructed, sanitising every 5 seconds etc.

Then I caught it from him - and I hadn’t done anything out with the regulations at the time.

greenzeppelin · 17/07/2021 17:57

Yes he felt unwell and took a lateral flow even though the advice e has always been if you have symptoms you don't use a lateral flow you get a PCR.

One rule for them though, another for us plea.
