49 deaths reported today, 50 yesterday & 42,000 cases plus today, I am feeling very nervous about the weeks ahead... The govt simply have to man up & take ownership of this escalating catastrophe....

@FlyingBattie
Plenty of people are already seriously ill with Long Covid. Scientific experts are expecting cases of LC to rise, along with the huge rise in infections. That link has not been broken.

@Dontforgetyourbrolly

No , I'm more concerned about the massive increase in anxiety
Anxiety about anxiety !

@XenoBitch

More people died from cancer today. Sometimes I do wonder if reporting every daily Covid death figure is actualy helpful.
....and a great number of those died because the hospitals were dealing with covid. Excess mortality is the right way to monitor any disease.
BunsyGirl · 17/07/2021 09:34

@Hillary4 More than 450 people die of cancer every day. That was pre-Covid.

Hillary4 · 17/07/2021 10:14

2016 - 2018 figures, some were family to me.
I'm glad they were not seeking treatment during covid, worrying enough in normal times.

paddyk · 17/07/2021 10:14

What's it got to do with Wembey? The main spread will be coming from all those cafes, bars and pubs etc.....

lljkk · 17/07/2021 11:07

Do we know that long covid is just as common among people who have covid after 2 jabs as it is in people who had no jabs? My guess it's too early to say if the link is reduced.

BoredZelda · 17/07/2021 11:30

I saw the same "but they are double vacced"

Not an argument made by me. G7 had a pretty good testing regime in place which is what made the difference. No double standard there.

QueenStromba · 17/07/2021 11:37

Cases did rocket in Cornwall in the following weeks though.

QueenStromba · 17/07/2021 11:38

Which people conveniently forget when they say none of the large events have caused a spike in cases.

Around 450 a day die of cancer in the UK. That is much higher than 50 a day of course but much lower than the 1,000 a day deaths we were getting earlier in the year.

If we even end up with 200-300 deaths a day from Covid , that is not so many fewer than cancer that you can say meh so what ( unless you are seriously callous anyway ).

It should be the Wembley Effect though rather than variant

Scotland is starting to drop fairly quickly after it’s football rise will be interesting to see whether we do. We could see some fairly steep rises over the next 2 weeks which hopefully could then start dropping

Whenthedealgoesdown · 18/07/2021 07:37

Won't there be lots of other events though, not ones as big as Wembley but surely lots of concerts and other busy events. I'm going to see Tom Jones + horse racing on Friday- hopefully... It's mainly outside but expecting it to be busy

Yes it’s not even correct term
