New Boris Statement: Where is this going?

DadAManger · 12/07/2021 17:20

‘We recommend masks but only recommend them’
‘Deaths will increase and we may reach 100,000 new cases per day’
‘We must open now and if not now, when?’
‘The slower we take it, the smaller number of people will die’
‘Return to the office of you can, otherwise keep working from home’

Just before Boris spoke, there was a BBC piece claiming that 10-20% of all Covid cases (mild, without symptoms, or otherwise) will be long-Covid cases of some sort or another. Now there a million long-Covid cases.

Are we aiming for herd immunity? Anyone else think this is going to be confusing for most and lead to a default setting of ‘normal’? Where is this going?

Well yes. "Personal responsibility" really means "abdication of political responsibility". None of what happens next is in the government's remit. The blame lies with you (from other people's perspective) and everyone around you (from your perspective).

Sacked by your employer because you're having chemo and it's risky for you to be in a poorly ventilated workplace? Your employer should have taken a common sense approach. Caught covid on the tube on the way to work? Your fellow passengers should have taken a common sense approach. We told your to be sensible but none of you are and it's your own fault you're in a predicament now.

Caramellatteplease · 12/07/2021 17:41

They're killing off the most vulnerable in society. And anyone stupid enough not to get vaccinated.

I have no problem with the second. I have a big problem with the first.

It doesn't take a genius that at some point they are going to have to volte face when the NHS buckles

AnyFucker · 12/07/2021 17:41

I am puzzled as to why the PM keeps shoehorning racism, football and taking the knee into this press conference

So, it seems, is Chris Whitty

MarshaBradyo · 12/07/2021 17:43

I’m imagining us all walking around very slowly

Cautiously but not much detail

Earlydancing · 12/07/2021 17:43

Of course if you're young, fit and healthy, you're not going to be as alarmed as someone vulnerable. But I think a lot of young people are responsible and will wear masks. Those that don't, probably were anyway.

nether · 12/07/2021 17:43

What's annoying is that the CEV guidance is once again coming out after the press conference, so they don't get asked any questions about it.

Though there were questions in the Commons - pointing out that for millions 'freedom day' is exactly the opposite

EverythingWillFallInLine · 12/07/2021 17:43

It's to show he cares.

SonnetForSpring · 12/07/2021 17:43

The covid pass stuff is interesting.

SonnetForSpring · 12/07/2021 17:45

@DadAManger

The comments they keep making about ‘be cautious’, ‘think carefully’ and ‘overall, we need to go steady’ will be deeply confusing for so many I fear (including businesses). They keep being asked to clarify, but it doesn’t seem to be happening.
Yes very vague. Crazy approach.
UnmentionedElephantDildo · 12/07/2021 17:45

It doesn't take a genius that at some point they are going to have to volte face when the NHS buckles

Well they've now repeatedly disavowed the irreversibility of the changes.

(And I think they are edging towards making masks mandatory again on public transport)

Agree.
SonnetForSpring · 12/07/2021 17:47

Complete back track from how freedom day was originally billed, as expected.

screwcovid · 12/07/2021 17:48

Bloody hell so many doom mongers on here what do you think we should do then ?
Keep restrictions more people lost to suicide , more debt, more business lost what do you think should be done 16 months is enough people are double vaxed

SonnetForSpring · 12/07/2021 17:50

I just really don't want another lockdown. That would be ridiculous. Schools and sports activities can't keep closing.

NannyAndJohn · 12/07/2021 17:50

The vulnerable, pregnant women, and children completely thrown to the wolves.

I could weep.

I could fucking weep.

Blankscreen · 12/07/2021 17:51

They are putting the emphasis on people take responsibility and taking thing slowly

I think it pretty obvious that lots of people in this country can't be responsible nor will they take things slowly

Loads of employers will now force people back into the office and you will be a "difficult' employee if you say I'm not comfortable as the tube is really really crowded etc

It's going to be carnage

screwcovid · 12/07/2021 17:51

I could fucking weep.

Don't be so dramatic

What would you suggest?
screwcovid · 12/07/2021 17:55

Also what about all the other virus that children have no immunity to as not been exposed which is gonna come this winter too

WorraLiberty · 12/07/2021 17:56

What's the alternative?

What makes you say that? @NannyAndJohn

I haven't read his latest statement, but I am pregnant.

RSV is already here in bugger numbers than before because it was suppressed over winter but we can't forever. A load of nurseries have closed to try and limit the spread here, and those requiring treatment in hospital have increased and its the freaking summer. I think the toll of lockown on little ones will be emergent for quite some time.
