New Boris Statement: Where is this going?

DadAManger · 12/07/2021 17:20

‘We recommend masks but only recommend them’
‘Deaths will increase and we may reach 100,000 new cases per day’
‘We must open now and if not now, when?’
‘The slower we take it, the smaller number of people will die’
‘Return to the office of you can, otherwise keep working from home’

Just before Boris spoke, there was a BBC piece claiming that 10-20% of all Covid cases (mild, without symptoms, or otherwise) will be long-Covid cases of some sort or another. Now there a million long-Covid cases.

Are we aiming for herd immunity? Anyone else think this is going to be confusing for most and lead to a default setting of ‘normal’? Where is this going?

I think we've given it our best shot and now we'll just have to learn to live with it.

Sad but true imo.

SonnetForSpring · 12/07/2021 17:22

They are really emphasising the "go slowly" and don't let your behaviour return to pre pandemic norms. Let's hope people listen.

SonnetForSpring · 12/07/2021 17:23

They also are saying restrictions can be introduced again so there we go....

newnortherner111 · 12/07/2021 17:25

Mr Johnson is only doing what he is doing now because too many Tory backbenchers will not support extending restrictions, and Labour will not agree to what Mr Johnson might propose.

SonnetForSpring · 12/07/2021 17:25

Basically they are pinning their hopes on the public doing the right thing... they have more faith than I do. I just hope schools stay open in autumn. I feel that is very much in doubt.

SGChome20 · 12/07/2021 17:26

I think part of it is ‘we need to go slowly but we don’t have the money or inclination to force it to go slowly’

UnmentionedElephantDildo · 12/07/2021 17:27

They know it's going to be a big exit wave, and theyvarent going to stop it. They want it to happen over the summer, outside the winter pressures on the NHS. It means there isn't much hope of NHS tackling the backlog.

And worst case, we have to have restrictions back - PM has now twice disawoved irreversibility.

The link between hospital admissions and positive cases has been significantly weakened - down to 3% I think they said?

If the numbers do hit 100,000 a day (two more doublings, it's been doubling roughly 9-11 days) then even that weakened link becomes troublesome.

EverythingWillFallInLine · 12/07/2021 17:28

How can we achieve herd immunity if catching it doesn't make you immune?

Saucery · 12/07/2021 17:32

It’s less ‘herd immunity’ and more ‘survival of the fittest’.

EverythingWillFallInLine · 12/07/2021 17:33

Really the impression I get is that they lost control long ago but have to open up because they don't want to put any more money into keeping closed.

Also, they don't care at all about the people who will get it and be badly affected by it/die from it. They never did. Their only "policy" , such as it was, for the so-called "vulnerable" was to exclude them even further from society than they already were. To marginalize their work, personal and leisure opportunities even more than they already were. And then leave them.

BlueJag · 12/07/2021 17:33

Winter it's round the corner.

SonnetForSpring · 12/07/2021 17:33

Yep
Earlydancing · 12/07/2021 17:33

They saud that the modelling shows that it doesn't matter when they lift restrictions now, the numbers remain roughly the same. So I guess best to open in the summer, when it's easier to be outside and hospitals aren't as full, and try and save some businesses, and the economy.

I know people have aow view of society, but WE are society. Most of us are responsible and try to do the right thing. Those that don't were probably not doing the right thing before July 19th anyway.

Lemonmelonsun · 12/07/2021 17:35

Chris whitty has been stumbling through out.

What rubbish to go steady how can business go steady?

Oh ventilation!! At last!!

ComDummings · 12/07/2021 17:35

They’re wanting to peak the wave as early as possible to make winter less shit I think.

oneglassandpuzzled · 12/07/2021 17:35

Thing is, some of those who really ought to be most considerate about their behaviour are least likely to be so. Unvaccinated yobs (not saying this is all the unvaccinated group, of course) aren’t likely to wear masks on the tube or self-isolate.

SonnetForSpring · 12/07/2021 17:35

They could have lifted the restrictions steadily... but it seems they are handing all responsibility over to the public. Which won't go well, then they will reintroduce restrictions in winter and blame the public.

Dontdripme · 12/07/2021 17:36

@WorraLiberty

I agree
AlecTrevelyan006 · 12/07/2021 17:37

They have been lifting restrictions steadily - it is exactly what has been happening since 12 April

SonnetForSpring · 12/07/2021 17:37

I wonder if people will still be celebrating 'freedom day'...

SonnetForSpring · 12/07/2021 17:38

@AlecTrevelyan006

They mean lift them steadily from now on in...don't twist it.
Earlydancing · 12/07/2021 17:38

After doing critical thinking, is that really the only assessment that people can come up with: Tories are happy if people die?

Lemonmelonsun · 12/07/2021 17:38

How can we all do the right thing when we all have different reasons for caring /not caring about t covid?

If I was far away far from younger and healthy and fit covid wouldn't alarms me, I probably wouldn't be taking the same the precautions and worry as I do with a dc with asthma and me unfit etc?

Some one else may be fit and healthy and young, but have vulnerable partners or parents so they may take more care, maybe more than a teen whose bloody fed up at not being able to live normally and doesn't care at all about catching covid!

Everyone in an office will have very different feelings and if the boss thinks it's all a load of nonsense what can people do??

Utterly balmy.

Earlydancing · 12/07/2021 17:40

But are these unvaccinated yobs wearing a mask now? Not that I've seen.
DadAManger · 12/07/2021 17:40

The comments they keep making about ‘be cautious’, ‘think carefully’ and ‘overall, we need to go steady’ will be deeply confusing for so many I fear (including businesses). They keep being asked to clarify, but it doesn’t seem to be happening.
