New Boris Statement: Where is this going?

550 replies

DadAManger · 12/07/2021 17:20

‘We recommend masks but only recommend them’
‘Deaths will increase and we may reach 100,000 new cases per day’
‘We must open now and if not now, when?’
‘The slower we take it, the smaller number of people will die’
‘Return to the office of you can, otherwise keep working from home’

Just before Boris spoke, there was a BBC piece claiming that 10-20% of all Covid cases (mild, without symptoms, or otherwise) will be long-Covid cases of some sort or another. Now there a million long-Covid cases.

Are we aiming for herd immunity? Anyone else think this is going to be confusing for most and lead to a default setting of ‘normal’? Where is this going?

Exactly @Overthebow

Each employer will responsible as they are now , to do a H& s assesment taking covid into account . They could still insist on masks in certain circumstances . But if someone refuses then they may not be able to sack them but they will possibly be ostracised by others.

Mummyoflittledragon · 12/07/2021 19:01

@NotPersephone

There seems to be a strong correlation between long Covid and over-generous sickness terms in the public sector. I doubt it’s a coincidence.
Would you also say the same thing of sufferers of ME/CFS, who aren’t able to participate in everyday life and disabled through it?
TheVanguardSix · 12/07/2021 19:01

I think we've given it our best shot and now we'll just have to learn to live with it. Sad but true imo.

Yep. This is just the fact of the matter really.

Arrowheart · 12/07/2021 19:02

The vulnerable, pregnant women, and children completely thrown to the wolves.

I could weep.

I could fucking weep.

It has always been the case that those who successfully risk assess tend to live longer than those who don’t. The nanny state/NHS has been doing all the grown up thinking for a large percentage of the population now they will have to do it themselves.

Nonmaquillee · 12/07/2021 19:04

@Blankscreen

They are putting the emphasis on people take responsibility and taking thing slowly

I think it pretty obvious that lots of people in this country can't be responsible nor will they take things slowly

Loads of employers will now force people back into the office and you will be a "difficult' employee if you say I'm not comfortable as the tube is really really crowded etc

It's going to be carnage

Carnage 🙄🙄🙄

Iggly · 12/07/2021 19:07

The same who'd be responsible (if any) if it were flu or norovirus rather than covid

Covid isn’t the flu. The symptoms are similar but the virus is not.

Same for norovirus.

Honestly, people keep thinking that this is just some virus that we have to live with.

Actually what we need is a properly funded health service, with a healthy population and then covid would be less of an issue.

We have a government who plan to do nothing to encourage it and pull the greatest trick by thinking it’s up to individuals only. It isn’t in our gift to change these things.

whynotwhatknot · 12/07/2021 19:09

he expect people to be careful and wear masks

yes boris and i expect people nt to be racist thugs but you know

It means they’ve lost control and don’t want the responsibility to fall on the governments shoulders when more people die. I’m all for normal life - but “recommendations” won’t keep people safe.

MissyB1 · 12/07/2021 19:13

@LemonSherbetFancies

I really don't think it's going to be as awful as people say. The NHS will not become overwhelmed,businesses can reopen at full capacity and schools can go ahead as normal. Life is about to get easier I feel.
Well life might get easier for you BUT I can assure you hospitals are already overwhelmed! Maybe not with Covid (at the moment), but all the other serious illnesses that are now suddenly reappearing, plus the bloody horrendous backlogs. NHS staff are drowning and they know this winter will be a fucking shitshow. Do not fool yourself our hospitals are not coping.
Jaxhog · 12/07/2021 19:14

@oneglassandpuzzled

Thing is, some of those who really ought to be most considerate about their behaviour are least likely to be so. Unvaccinated yobs (not saying this is all the unvaccinated group, of course) aren’t likely to wear masks on the tube or self-isolate.
This. I will be giving them a very wide berth. Always assuming I go out at all now. So much for a happy retirement.
Heyhohi · 12/07/2021 19:16

We need to open up, delta variant is more contagious but not as deadly as alpha one.

CallmeHendricks · 12/07/2021 19:16

"Terminally thick?"

Is that an expression that someone who professes to be a teacher should be using? Shame on you.

Overthebow · 12/07/2021 19:17

Why would there be carnage? Everyone can think for themselves, we don’t need the state to think for us. I’m double vaccinated and my risk is low, I’ll be going about my life as normal. Those who are more vulnerable or not jabbed can decide for themselves what level or risk they want to take. Seems sensible to me.

bringincrazyback · 12/07/2021 19:19

@Saucery

It’s less ‘herd immunity’ and more ‘survival of the fittest’.
This is what I'm worried about too. Sad
onceivepostedidontcomeback · 12/07/2021 19:21

I have a large circle of friends and family who are unvaccinated yobs by choice. I can assure you they are sticking to the rules, possibly more so than the do-gooders wearing masks.

onceivepostedidontcomeback · 12/07/2021 19:22

@oneglassandpuzzled see above, i even came back for it!

Sanguinesuzy · 12/07/2021 19:26

@MissyB1 agree. Our hospital has stopped all non urgent surgery (NW).

OrchestraOfWankery · 12/07/2021 19:27

Jaxhog I'm retired and rely on public transport. I will continue to wear a mask onboard but not exactly reassured that many others will.

I won't be attending crowded events or places either - so yeah not quite the happy retirement I imagined!

This is exactly why. You say you can think yourself and that's quite clear. You are literally only thinking of yourself.

Is it any wonder we have black football players suffering racist abuse, when the country is led by a government that is knowingly pursing a Covid policy that will lead to many black deaths. It sends a message.

Lets hope so, normal sounds good to me.
