Selfish people caused another lockdown at Christmas

No, a highly transmissible new variant of a virus for which at the time there was no vaccine caused a lockdown at Christmas.

Yes and blaming it on ‘selfish people’ is redolent of early societies blaming eclipses and poor harvests on humans angering the gods, and making sacrifices to those gods to placate them. Primitive and superstitious.

To use a turn of phrase much beloved of some posters on these threads: "The virus doesn't care if you're selfish or not."

Stuffin · 04/07/2021 19:47

Gosh yes. I wonder how history will view this.

confuseddotcom090 · 04/07/2021 19:56

@kindaclassy

We had this argument since before the first lockdown.

Selfish people caused another lockdown at Christmas, and want nothing else than making everything worst for everything else.

You might not have a life and cheer if everybody else's life is cancelled, no holiday, no real freedom, no wedding. It's pathetic but it's MN. The bitterness towards anyone else who have a better or richer life.

Some of us would rather wear a mask and live as normal.

Hahaha

You know what causes lockdowns? Governments. Nothing else.

Againstmachine · 04/07/2021 19:59

Selfish the most stupid phrase chucked about during this, usually by the people who are really selfish.

sadperson16 · 04/07/2021 20:03

Enlighten me oh wise ones as to how I was selfish on my little trip to the hardware shop.

Huge shop, many aisles. One man serving behind a screen.Me,a mask refuser buys my stuff taps card, off I go.

Xenia · 04/07/2021 20:15

People are utterly divided on these issues. I hate masks (although I do wear one as i do not pick and choose which laws I obey) and cannot wait until they go. Others do not want the mandatory views to go. This will be over soon just like Brexit and indeed the divide over the Corn Laws in 1980s and whether we should come off the gold standard in the 1930s. There are always these divides.

They come and they go.

I think you should be careful saying stuff like that, sadperson.

You are going to find yourself castigated for killing babies and grannies.

You'll find that you are blamed not only for future lockdowns, but also the lockdowns past. They were only needed because people like you couldn't be trusted to stick to the rules. You know that, don't you?

Enjoy it. :-)

sadperson16 · 04/07/2021 20:25

There were no babies or grannies in the shop? All was well.

christinarossetti19 · 04/07/2021 20:28

The Xmas and subsequent lock down weren't caused by 'selfish people'.

Most people who contracted and transmitted the virus did so while going about their lawful business, like going to work or school.

Exactly.

My mask wearing where mandated DH got it at work. What a selfish arse he was. But hey let's not stop those blaming them for causing the lockdown.

Selfish people caused another lockdown at Christmas

Yes this is what some people think. They think I am good and follow the rules and therefore would be safe but for those evil mask refusing rule breakers.

Selfish is the most overused word of 2020/2021 and in any event "selfish" people did not cause the lockdown at Christmas, the outbreak of the Kent variant did.
kindaclassy · 04/07/2021 21:51

Anyone who has ever been on a covid ward find these comments so heart warming. And educated.

and HOW do you think that virus was transmitted then? Internet? Your tinfoil hat maybe?

My tinfoil what now? My double jabbed, wear a mask if you're able, conspiracy theories are trash tinfoil hat perhaps?! I'm really not sure what's so offensive about the idea that a virus spreading, as viruses will, is what caused a lockdown.

It wasn't transmitted by the internet, no. It was transmitted primarily by the millions of people who were going to work, and school, and attending hospital appointments, and driving buses, and delivering groceries, and living in care homes who had no choice but to do these things.

TheVampiresWife · 04/07/2021 22:07

@igelkott2021 stop saying sensible things like that or @kindaclassy will start going on about your tinfoil hat, too Grin

The blame game is ludicrous. Viruses are dicks which are designed to spread. A minority who have their mum over for tea or don't wear a mask in Sainsbo's are not wholly responsible for a pandemic, well, pandemic-ing. All it does is create division and perpetuate the 'us and them' narrative beloved of so many.

CottageGardener · 04/07/2021 22:13

@Oblahdeeoblahdoe

I'm ordering N95 ones. I don't intend to protect others if they won't protect me.
I think you might want to order some anxiety literature as wellHmm
Unsure33 · 04/07/2021 22:14

I hope that masks will be treated as advisable on public transport at least .

Then those who want to wear them can without feeling awkward.

I agree there are people who don’t wear them properly at all , but more fool them because there is proof that they can at least reduce transmission.

Wishfulthinking1977 · 04/07/2021 22:16

Yes my tinfoil hat will definitely protect me from aliens as much as a piece of cloth or paper will protect me from a virus!! Hmm

SueSaid · 04/07/2021 22:20

'A minority who have their mum over for tea or don't wear a mask in Sainsbo's are not wholly responsible for a pandemic, '

Oh dear. The enabling and excusing continues.

If one person did it fine but collectively it has an impact. Mn is full of flouters and mask refusers. It gives us a snapshot of why it's gone on as long as it has. Infectious diseases need human contact you see 🙄.

Chillychangchoo · 04/07/2021 22:35

And thanks to the many millions of people who had no choice but to go to work/school/hospital appointments/live in care homes/use public transport over the past year and a half, covid has had plenty of opportunities for human contact.

A few thousand people wilfully flouting rules will obviously have far less effect on transmission than tens of millions of people going about their daily business, quite obviously.
