'The mask refusers have made things much harder for the exempt.'

Yes. As I've said throughout those who believe they have a genuine reason are one thing. Sadly and frustratingly many others have used this 'exemption' as a get out clause just not to bother.

The reason it is such a divisive issue and why I have been so 'vocal' about it is no one likes wearing them. No one. Those of us who have actually done what has been asked of us get v pissed off with those who haven't, barring the few with such real and extreme conditions that they are on meds and under the care of hcps

@TheVampiresWife

To be fair the Fail isn't the only news outlet reporting this.

It's fantastic news!

Definitely, mine are starting to shed fibres & are pretty itchy now!
Scottishskifun · 04/07/2021 18:33

I always wore a mask til I got covid and now long covid. I have tried repeatedly to keep going with them to avoid people having a go as it actually makes life easier but reality is that I can only manage a matter of minutes before it sends my breathlessness through the roof. My asthma is considerably worse since covid.

But if I don't wear one I get states, tuts and comments including someone telling me that I would be responsible for their grandmother dying due to my selfishness! Charming!

I've now sourced a land yard but it's sad that as a society we judge and comment on others so much!
In Scotland the rules will be staying so looks like I will be wearing it a good while longer!

Tzimi · 04/07/2021 18:33

@Imnothereforthedrama

I can’t believe people are still arguing about masks 12 months on . I’m not convinced They do anything to stop the spread of Covid, but yet people seem to think that this bit of flimsy material that I bet a lot of people don’t wear properly and wash often will protect them . We’ve had people saying that they can’t understand why anyone can’t wear one then say if you can’t wear one stay home . It’s absolutely disgusting and you know what it makes me think there are so many people who aren’t very nice about no empathy whatsoever. I’m fucking done with this argument roll on the 19th.
Masks stop saliva aerosols from spreading bacteria & viruses to other people. After all, why do surgeons wear masks?

Surgeons wear expensive, specialised masks and are trained in their use - including throwing them away after one wearing.

The manky bits of cloth people fish out of their pockets when going into Tesco's are nowhere near as effective.

Scottishskifun · 04/07/2021 18:57

@Tzimi actually they don't hence Dr's and nurses have still contracted covid just from attending work. Surgical grade masks reduce the amount of aerosols but they do not stop them, only a FFP3 mask grade or a positive pressure system do this. Also masks have to be changed regularly and only worn once.

Wizzbangfizz · 04/07/2021 19:07

Surgical masks worn in theatre, worn once and after a through scrub down in clinical conditions is a very different kettle of fish to what most people do - putting on and off constantly a tatty bit of cloth which is more than likely not washed.

jewel1968 · 04/07/2021 19:12

I got a lovely silk one. It is thick but so comfortable.

jewel1968 · 04/07/2021 19:13

But agree I not sure how effective they are given how we all wear them - badly.

sadperson16 · 04/07/2021 19:13

How many tens of thousands of people have a mask scrunched up on a pocket or bag,which they slap on for Sainsbos? Might as well put a pair of pants on your head.Actually......

Just the one? How often fo you wash it, and at what temperature?

Do people seriously think surgical masks in a clean setting like a surgical theatre is the same as my pathetic piece of cloth that gets put on to go to the supermarket is in the same league?

I despair I really do.

My clean ones are in a case. The used ones go into a sealable bag for disposal or laundry. Quite why people can't store them properly is puzzling - unless of course they're basically just paying lip service to the expectation to wear a face covering unless exempt.

I don’t really follow this line of thinking. Wear it or don’t, whatever really, but there is a benefit to wearing a mask in reducing (not eliminating) aerosol spread. I don’t wash my hands to the same standard surgeons do either but that doesn’t make it pointless for me to wash my hands. People treat tissues in a revolting manner and it wasn’t that long ago it was common for people to carry a hanky, use of either is still better than not using them at all.
Stuffin · 04/07/2021 19:25

It's the fact that people think Mask wearing stops covid and is so important we should continue it forever. If it was that good no one would contract it in a hospital what with everyone wearing one 🤔

Chillychangchoo · 04/07/2021 19:26

I just wear any old rag. Even been known to find one underneath my car seat when I got desperate.

Total lip service here.

kindaclassy · 04/07/2021 19:32

We had this argument since before the first lockdown.

Selfish people caused another lockdown at Christmas, and want nothing else than making everything worst for everything else.

You might not have a life and cheer if everybody else's life is cancelled, no holiday, no real freedom, no wedding. It's pathetic but it's MN. The bitterness towards anyone else who have a better or richer life.

Some of us would rather wear a mask and live as normal.

On what planet is wearing a mask ‘living as normal’? Not this one!

You've created a strange little narrative for yourself there. Do you actually believe it?

Off you go with your mask and normal life. I plan to have a normal life too, but mine does not include masks.

Chillychangchoo · 04/07/2021 19:36

@TeddingtonTrashbag

I know right? Some people’s perception of normal really is quite disturbing.

TheVampiresWife · 04/07/2021 19:37

No, a highly transmissible new variant of a virus for which at the time there was no vaccine caused a lockdown at Christmas.

Stuffin · 04/07/2021 19:42

Yes this is what some people think. They think I am good and follow the rules and therefore would be safe but for those evil mask refusing rule breakers.
