Mouth guards … surprised the DM didn’t go for “muzzles” Hmm

COVID aside, I can’t stand the thought of going back to people coughing on you and peoples rank breath when they’re too close Envy

knittingaddict · 01/07/2021 08:04

I do worry about a more dangerous variant if we allow cv to be spread unchecked. I hope this doesn't come back and bite us in the bum. Sad

Spekoppar · 01/07/2021 08:04

I’ll carry on wearing mine on public transport and in shops.

Beyond the headlines there is mention of masks going ‘ in most situations’ so I wouldn’t be surprised if they remain on public transport and maybe medical settings etc.

SirSamuelVimes · 01/07/2021 08:06

No-one in my office wears them. We don't distance beyond normal personal space either. It's the most normal bit of my life and I love it.

Once the rule goes the masks will go for most people, it might take a couple of weeks but it'll be a snowball effect I reckon. And then only the most irritatingly hyper anxious, "I've followed all the rules, I just despair when I see what other people are doing" types will be wearing them and I shall know who to avoid!

Tanfastic · 01/07/2021 08:07

I'd love it if this happens, I hate them. I used to love strolling round the shops prior to covid but have avoided this since we had to wear masks as I just don't find it pleasant, have shopped online.

We've been told to expect them to be around for much longer in work though (NHS).

Itsstartingtorainout · 01/07/2021 08:08

Good, although I haven’t worn one for ages anyway. Nobody’s said a word.

Okcookie · 01/07/2021 08:09

Yeah, I've pretty much stopped wearing mine. I'm double jabbed and take regular LFT especially before going anywhere I can't distance.

Badgercity · 01/07/2021 08:14

I’m going to miss hiding my hormonal chin acne and crocked teeth in public Sad

I wonder how long I can get away with wearing one before people start avoiding me thinking I’m an over anxious hand ringer.

Nice post Angry

Does it impact you in any way if others continue to wear a mask? Not all mask wearers are anxiety ridden snowflakes and it's so offensive to suggest that they are. It might end up being non mask wearers that you were better off avoiding.

Chickychickydodah · 01/07/2021 08:16

I’ll be wearing mine for a while longer.

TeddingtonTrashbag · 01/07/2021 08:17

@WouldBeGood

Fingers-bloody-crossed!

Though I’m in Scotland so probably masked forever 🤷🏻‍♀️

@Lucidas incredibly dense…or maybe pregnant, like me? Or under 16? Or so immunocompromised that you can’t have the vaccine?

Sorry to be “collateral damage”.

Bagelsandbrie · 01/07/2021 08:18

I think a lot of people will keep wearing them, especially in shops.

apocalypsehow · 01/07/2021 08:18

This past year of enforced mask wearing has been really surreal to me. I've never worn one. Never owned one. I said from the beginning that I don't believe they are at all useful and in fact are detrimental to the cause the way the majority of people use them. Thorough hand washing and keeping out of people's space is more than enough. I can't participate in the theatre of something I truly believe is unhelpful to the pandemic.

They're apparently mandatory at my place of work, in shops, at my midwife appointments etc etc. I live in scotland where it feels like masks are going to stick around forever at this rate! I've never worn one and never been bothered by anyone about the fact that I don't wear one. I never lie about why I don't wear one. I decided as soon as they were made "mandatory" that if anyone asked why I wasn't wearing one, I would tell them.

I don't think enough people realise what happens when you don't wear one. Nothing really... it's not exciting. My life has carried on just the same. I wash my hands more diligently, keep away from people, and follow the same social restrictions as everyone else. But nothing bad happens if you disagree that masks are helpful.

I've name changed for this as the abuse I got off Mumsnetters for saying this at the beginning of the pandemic was really over the top. I notice now that a lot of people are saying to me that they wish they had taken a similar stand a year ago as now they feel they can't take off the masks for fear of... something. I don't know what.

It's truly been a bizarre experience to walk around maskless this entire time and still interact with people in the same way. No one has ever been nasty to me or been anything other than pleasant and chatty as normal. I've had a few people ask me why I don't wear one and their response has always been how they wish they'd stood their ground about it from day one too.

It's been a strange year. I'm glad to see restrictions gradually easing and normality on the horizon.

It's not unchecked though - we have vaccines, and by 19 July the vast majority of adults will be vaccinated.
Mydogisagentleman · 01/07/2021 08:21

I really hope this is true.

Well of course my sentiment discounts people who can’t have the vaccine for various reasons...

And at a personal level, I had the vaccine at 32 weeks pregnant (Pfizer). So it’s available should you wish. Advice for final trimester women will be to socially distance, but how do you do that when cases continue to explode after July, I have no idea

Angel2702 · 01/07/2021 08:24

I’ve had both doses of vaccine but I worry about the kids if there is no protection whatsoever when they are out.

Well, my teen can't wear one and they've had loads of busybodies up in their face about it and been refused entry to some places even though they are exempt.
TheVampiresWife · 01/07/2021 08:25

Does it impact you in any way if others continue to wear a mask?

Yes, if you're hard of hearing and rely on lip-reading (something I didn't realise I did so much until masks came in).

I don't think enough people realise what happens when you don't wear one. Nothing really... it's not exciting

I'm exempt and I've had glares, abuse, threats, been told I'm a disease breathed tramp, been spat at... I wear a lanyard though and I think that's like a trigger for some people. Rather than think 'exempt person' and get on with their day they think 'piss taker' and have a pop. For a while it was every time I went out - it got better for a while a few months ago but I've noticed comments and judgy looks again recently, which is bonkers when you consider nobody will be wearing them in a few weeks (unless you want to).

Indeed!!!!! The most normal I feel is when I am in my work room at school with two other people and we happily interact normally snd unmasked. And the school (secondary) has only a handful of ‘cases’ since it all began, no bubbles or year groups sent home.

And yes to the shops that might initially insist on retaining them -will rapidly change when their only customer are the fussy stingy type (the two traits tend to co-exist by all accounts)

How does hand washing alone stop the spread of an airborne virus?

dangerrabbit · 01/07/2021 08:26

Watch them "postpone" this at a special press conference at 8pm on the 18th July.

apocalypsehow · 01/07/2021 08:26

@Mumbletum

That's bloody awful. I'm sorry they've had such experiences. Some situations bring out the worst in people.

Killahangilion · 01/07/2021 08:27

If that idiot BoJo does lifts the rules on wearing face coverings indoors, just remember that other countries have different rules if you intend to holiday abroad.
