Just listened to the Scottish news and we are not getting rid of masks. DEVASTATED. I now have the urge to move to England/New Zealand, bloody anywhere but here. On another note, though, I don't know how Scottish hospitality will feel about this, as I'm sure many English tourists may now think twice about coming over the border for a holiday knowing they are going to have to wear a mask when they don't have to at home. I see a rebellion.

Oblahdeeoblahdoe · 04/07/2021 23:37

@CottageGardener no anxiety here, just plain commonsense since C19 is an airborne disease. You just crack on though...

Feel free to move then. I am glad that Scotland is being more cautious ( not enough though). The case numbers will be massive on 19th July. The decision to stop marks and other restrictions is completely reckless - a decision made by a government that doesn’t care

Excellent news.

The fact is, for most people wearing masks is of absolutely no hardship whatsoever, and they have been shown time and again to reduce transmission.

People who don't want to wear them can just stay the fuck at home and let the rest of us get on with taking the most minimal of precautions.

Ginandfantalemon · 05/07/2021 00:45

@RunnerDown Yes case numbers may well be massive by 19th July, and that's to be expected because of more testing, but with more vaccines being done, this is our way out. Otherwise, is your thinking that we should all be vaccinated, but just in case vaccines don't work, we should perhaps spend another 18 months indoors to make sure. Lots of people dead by then, and not with Covid. Some people don't have time to be more cautious, physically or mentally.

Ginandfantalemon · 05/07/2021 00:54

@UrAWizHarry
It's actually appalling as to how low some people can go. And to any member of a mental health team reading this, here lies the problem.

JohnnyLuLus · 05/07/2021 00:56

I don't think it's the right time to drop masks. I feel sorry for people who work in shops who will be at risk, as well as those who are medically unable to have the vaccine - they need everyone to protect them. Everything will open up capacity, places will be packed, and with everywhere full and no masks, those of us who are vulnerable will be forced to stay at home.

I’m actually considering booking a holiday in Scotland for this reason.

“Because of more testing”

I’ve heard this excuse for a year now and it’s always dying. Positivity rates are up which means more extra cases than extra tests.

Wildewoodz · 05/07/2021 01:52

Wrong not dying

Sorry!!

Wildewoodz · 05/07/2021 01:59

@LetsGoFlyAKiteee

What never understood is people who are worried about others not having a mask on..but then going up to that person and having a go. So getting close and all..doesnt make sense. Seen many people without masks and hasn't crossed my mind to make a judgement or anything. Least if changes to personal choice be less aggro over them. Some people can...some people can't..some people just don't. Thats the way it's been.

Though seem to have collected a fair few so maybe will carry on..some are pretty even though probably not that useful

I agree even though I back the use of masks. I just always assume they might be exempt if I don’t know.

I am going to carry on wearing one until I have had my second jab at the end of august. I don't think it's right to stop mask wearing before everyone's been vaccinated personally.

Err the logic, here? We keep being told that masks ‘protect’ others, not the wearer. So by your logic, you should keep wearing your mask till everyone is double jabbed (in the country? the world?) or you are being selfish snd a granny killer. So why stop after you have been jabbed?

The stay.the.fuck.at.home brigade love to make out that this is all because of people ‘breaking the rules’. And that if we had all just ‘done our bit’ we would be out of this situation far sooner.

However like a PP said, only a small number of people were able to shut themselves away and wfh or be furloughed, get their weekly shopping deliveries etc.

TheVampiresWife · 05/07/2021 07:47

Ah, this old chestnut.

If you're uncomfortable and you feel that your personal risk level is reached by going places where people are unmasked once masks aren't mandatory, you stay at home.

I'm exempt but have always said if you can wear a mask, you should, while they're mandatory. It's none of my business if people don't want to anymore.

Your inflammatory language and judgement helps nobody, @UrAWizHarry.

Remmy123 · 05/07/2021 07:51

Places I go people are not wearing masks at all - think it's time they are dropped. Covid is here to stay and they cannot be enforced forever!

As pointed out already the numbers are rising not just because of higher testing- the positivity rates are increasing and are now at a level that indicates numbers are out of control.
And where did I suggest we should all stay at home for another 18 months. I think that wearing masks in public places and maintaining some level of social distancing until everyone is vaccinated and numbers are decreasing would be a safer way to go. So a few months more of some small measures .
My adult dc have just had their first doses of vaccinations. They have paid a heavy price for the last couple of years. I would like them to be respected , and for us to continue at the current levels of restrictions until they have had both their jabs. I am also worried about teenagers and young children who may not be vaccinated. They probably won’t die but some of them may go on to have long COVID.
The unpleasantness expressed by some posters towards folk like myself who view things in this way is simply ignorant

sadperson16 · 05/07/2021 09:00

So people are attracted to booking a holiday in Scotland because it is safer due to more mask wearing?

How will you get there? On the back of a giant flying ostrich high in the air far far away from all those nasty germs?

Hmm what about all those ostrich germs though?! I'm double jabbed and am not planning to wear one when it's no longer a legal requirement unless someone specifically asks me to do so. I'll keep one with me in case. In my view, once everyone has been offered their second jab it's BAU unless the shit hits the fan with a vaccine busting variant.

Also how terribly selfish, taking your germs from selfish germy old England to safe, masky Scotland!

I jest, but the mentality is boggling. You think England is unsafe but you're happy to potentially spread covid to other parts of the UK, and have the nerve to call others selfish?!

Xenia · 05/07/2021 09:30

There is no resolving the two sides but good that we are still all talking to each other.

I hope 19 July also sees no masks forced on train users even if the train companies want to keep them. Obviously if anyone wants to wear a mask that is up to them of course.

sadperson16 · 05/07/2021 09:36

What will happen as midnight chimes on the 18th?

I quite fancy the flying ostrich idea actually.
What about Berwick on Tweed and Hadrians Wall.....masked or unmasked?

I agree. For most people wearing a mask is simple and is proven to reduce transmission. Cases rising is not a non issue even if far fewer people are dying. The vaccines are not completely effective, and Increased cases= increased chance of a mutation that renders the vaccines ineffective. I feel that throwing caution to the wind in a fortnight is a mistake, the pandemic is not over, so a middle ground would be more sensible.
