@PopcornMuncher it’s not a ‘lie’ - it’s someone trying to figure out what best to do with the potential burden of thousands of deaths being put squarely on their shoulders!

I keep thinking of AA Bants. Surely wouldn’t have a Mumsnet account??

TeddingtonTrashbag · 07/07/2021 04:17

Good for Sainsbo’s!

@TeddingtonTrashbag wonder if it’ll cause a divide. The mask wearers in one supermarket - and the non mask wearers in another.

I wonder how the staff feel.

It's been done to death by others on here but he lied about the figures in November 2020 to justify lockdown 2 and he also lied about the figures to delay lifting of restrictions on June 21st but for some reason he gets a free pass.

No doubt plenty will defend him but this is indefensible[/quote]
That's not lying. Discussion of different hypothetical scenarios (which may not happen, especially if we take evasive action) is not lying.

I’d be very happy for the update conferences to continue with Patrick Whitty alone - I trust him whereas Boris - a waste of space.

Stuffin · 07/07/2021 08:19

I think they present what they want to justify their decisions at the time so I trust nothing they say in the press conferences.

I don’t trust any of them. Although at least last year Vallance was prepared to admit on TV that the death numbers were so high because “they have Covid on their death certificate, it doesn’t mean they had Covid, we didn’t test them”

Good! It should be compulsory everywhere. No one should be forced to wear a mask if it isn't UK law anymore.

From the Guardian

Dr Katherine Henderson, president of the Royal College of Emergency Medicine, told Times Radio this morning that she expected people to have to carry on wearing masks in hospitals even after 19 July, when the government plans to stop them being compulsory in England for public transport and shops. She said:

"We haven’t seen what the plans are for hospitals but the likelihood is that we will want to make it as safe as possible for everybody.

And the only way to do that will be to maintain the hand hygiene, the social distancing and mask wearing within a hospital.

A&E departments are often quite crowded environments and that’s one of our worries - so as people come in we may need mask-wearing to help keep other people safe because you might be an asymptomatic carrier and come with a cut finger, but you might be near somebody who’s immunosuppressed with a kidney transplant."

puppeteer · 07/07/2021 13:10

Well I certainly hope they encourage the wearing of proper masks, and the proper wearing of them.

If it’s all just for show, and mandate it, but let people wear their crumpled up disposable, dirty rag long forgotten from the bottom their pocket… if we do that and claim it’s protecting anyone at all, then that would be a travesty, helping no one, and possibly further disadvantaging those that are claimed nost in need.

But if we do a decent job. Provide proper equipment to all patients in order to limit inter-patient infection. And if we back it up with measurement, targets and reporting, and money, then good for us all.

Well in my local Sainsburys they will be relieved. They have been really struggling especially the older ones. Pushing pallets around and stacking shelves is manual work. Its not sitting WFH on a laptop Mon to Fri and popping to Waitrose for 20 mins with a mask

Parker231 · 07/07/2021 15:59

I’ve a few posts on my Twitter feeds where local independent shops are announcing that masks will remain for customers and staff.

That’s good.

I wonder if more unions will get involved rather than just the transport ones to ensure safe working conditions/measures.

Will be interesting to see how this pans out. It might have a negative effect on trade if it discouraged people from 'popping in' if they were out and about without a mask.
Parker231 · 07/07/2021 16:20

The responses have been positive from customers commenting on the shops maintaining masks. Good local shops - can’t see why customers would object to do as the shop asks.

MarshaBradyo · 07/07/2021 16:22

I have no idea what shops intend to do - local or supermarket level - did Sainsbury’s release something recently? not sure

Stuffin · 07/07/2021 16:23

I just hope those shops that still insist on customers wearing masks make it clear at the entrance because then everyone is free to make a choice whether to shop there or not.

Because they're out and about without one. I won't use those disposable ones, they're shit for the environment. Easy enough to just walk right out and buy elsewhere.

They don't keep people 'safe'.

They don't have to 'object'. Entering a shop is a choice, and if customers don't like the conditions imposed, they can just take their trade elsewhere. Whether or not many will do so in businesses which impose mask wearing remains very much to be seen.

The proof of that is how much business those shops lose if they insist on masks when they’re not mandatory. My guess is a lot.
herecomesthsun · 07/07/2021 16:53

Yeah, I would feel a lot safer (CEV) in a shop where masks are being worn. Easy for me to find somewhere safer to shop.

I already do this in fact. I am happy to shop in Aldi if it is very quiet. However, I prefer to shop in Waitrose or Marks and Spencer if Aldi doesn't look safe. Marks has been my go-to shop in the pandemic (worth the extra) when I have ventured into a shop. Clean and spacious and socially distanced.

I think our village shops are likely to err on the side of supporting masks as we have a lot of older people retired here, and quite a few care homes. If they possibly could, I think the shops would try to cater for both sorts of customer.
