@MachiaNelly

I’m worried shops and other places will insist on them anyway

I hope they do. I work 20 hours a week in one.

So what's to stop you wearing a more protective mask (like the FFP3 ones or similar) rather than expecting others to be made to carry on wearing masks?
SamW98 · 01/07/2021 12:48

@Mickarooni

Do people really care that much what other people do or don’t do?! I don’t look at non mask wearers and think anything, it wouldn’t cross my mind to wonder why. Equally, if people want to wear masks when it’s not mandatory then that’s their choice. Neither hurts me because I’ll continue to socially distance. I hate people in my personal space anyway, so as long as they’re not breathing down my neck (mask or no mask!) I don’t care what others do.
Absolutely agree. I can't say I've ever noticed if others wear masks or not because I go into the shop, get what I need and go mon my merry way without taking the slightest bit of notice about what anyone else might or might not be doing

Good news. Recently I was getting On the bus to work and realised I had forgotten my mask. Not ideal but these things happen sometimes, I wasn’t going to be late to work and not get on the bus. Heard two women tutting and sniping about how I was allowed on. Pathetic really, also heard of people being verbally abused over them.
Have I read this correctly? You can't organise your shit so other people have to put up with feeling unsafe/you potentially infecting them. Be late for work and get reprimanded or go home to get your mask and pay for a taxi to get you in on time. Might help focus your mind next time if you had dealt with the consequences of your mistake.

Just. Wow.

Anitawiglit12 · 01/07/2021 12:55

Jesus. Your reply is scary, people forget a mask, it happens. Your reply is very OTT.

RuggerHug · 01/07/2021 13:00

Why?

Justgettingbye · 01/07/2021 13:02

The parents at my kids preschool stopped wearing them weeks ago

I have to wear the shop issued masks. It's compulsory for me to wear it to work there. I don't expect people to wear masks if they don't want to - but as I encounter literally 300/500 people over the hours I work, I'd prefer it if the shop makes masks compulsory. Most people out shopping don't have to make 80/100 transactions a day, with a complete stranger. I do, and I think shops would be sensible to keep masks mandatory to make their staff feel safe. I fully expect they will.

I expect the shops will put their profits - and therefore their customers' preferences - first. You may find yourself disappointed.

Then the shop might lose more volunteers than it's already lost, because of the pandemic, and elderly volunteers packing it in.
Shop already having to close some half days if vols don't turn up.
It's a tricky balance. Time will tell.

MachiaNelly · 01/07/2021 13:18

Fortunately, trade is up. See if it stays that way.

Wizzbangfizz · 01/07/2021 13:18

Can't wait - I've already stopped wearing them in some places now. For those that want to happy for them to crack on but utterly pointless in my opinion.

Chillychangchoo · 01/07/2021 13:19

Can’t fucking wait. Off to buy some new lipsticks. 💋

SlipperyDippery · 01/07/2021 13:23

@RuggerHug you do realise people wearing masks can infect people with covid as well? In fact on an enclosed space like a bus there’s every chance they will unless wearing a high grade mask such as an FFP3? Lots of masks especially cloth masks don’t stop covid particles being breathed out and accumulating in the air in an enclosed space. Some masks may reduce it, others hardly at all. The value of a lot of masks is stopping the larger droplets when at close contact.

If the possibility catching covid makes you feel “unsafe” then the bus isn’t for you because with it without masks there is the potential it’s going to happen.

Not to mention people who are exempt from wearing masks.

Totally agree with those women. Competent adults aren’t generally forgetting their masks when getting on public transport. The driver shouldn’t have let you on.

Exempt is completely different to what pp said. They didn't bother doing the absolute minimum and whinged that other people weren't happy with them. They don't know if the other people on the bus are waiting for their second vaccine, going home to someone who can't have the vaccine or are on their way into work dealing with sick or vulnerable people. All they had to do was act like an adult,remember their mask and put it on.

PumpkinKlNG · 01/07/2021 13:31

I will be so happy about this, I’ve avoided shops and public transport for so long! Because I got verbally abused for not wearing one on the bus (I’m exempt) I hadn’t been on the bus for 6 months after it happened it was only recently I went on it again (a couple of weeks ago) and was questioned again by someone about masks, just a random woman not the driver or anything. Can’t wait until it’s socially acceptable not to wear one!

Whatabouttery · 01/07/2021 13:36

Good god how will you all cope when masks are no longer mandatory?

I do feel for those with health anxiety

Doghead · 01/07/2021 13:41

@bluejelly

I'll carry on wearing mine in enclosed spaces. I think lots will
I certainly won't.
TeddingtonTrashbag · 01/07/2021 13:41

Then the shop might lose more volunteers than it's already lost
Then they will have to people yo work there, thereby helping them back into the job market.
Good result!

How on earth are you going to cope when it is no longer mandatory? You clearly need some help to address your irrational anxiety.

Those women had no idea why she wasn’t wearing a mask, didn’t stop them sniping.

I’m pleased if since being an adult you never forget anything or make a mistake, but for mere mortals

I’ll wear a mask and think people should try to, but I think people get OTT when others don’t. I don’t agree it’s ok to verbally abuse someone not in a mask, and the suggestion that if you forget a mask you should have to go back home and be late to work/miss your appointment or whatever else is really disproportionate given that masks aren’t mandatory for everyone anyway.

I haven’t had my second vaccine, and my husband was working in the covid ICUs in the first wave while I was pregnant and before vaccines were a thing. I know about exposure to covid. I also believe we should try to keep things in perspective, and one person forgetting their mask on one occasion doesn’t warrant being banned from making their journey.

Well the staff can carry on wearing them if they need 'to feel safe'. I can't wait to stop wearing the damn things!
