@Mickarooni

Do people really care that much what other people do or don’t do?! I don’t look at non mask wearers and think anything, it wouldn’t cross my mind to wonder why. Equally, if people want to wear masks when it’s not mandatory then that’s their choice. Neither hurts me because I’ll continue to socially distance. I hate people in my personal space anyway, so as long as they’re not breathing down my neck (mask or no mask!) I don’t care what others do.
On MN, yes!

@osbertthesyrianhamster

Funny how up and arms some people were about single use plastics until fucking Covid came along.
True. But me and DH and my close family, have been wearing re-useable/washable masks since around 6-8 weeks after it all started - so since last April 2020.

We have only bought 6-8 (reusable) masks each altogether, and have been re-using them/washing them all alone, and haven't thrown anything away since last April 2020.

Don't know why everyone doesn't do that tbh. (Health workers aside...)

I am a bit indifferent @Mickarooni And I would not ever challenge someone not wearing a mask.....But I do think when I see a non mask wearer 'it's your funeral. YOU will be the one catching covid if you have no mask on.'

It's not going to affect me, so why should I care?

Same with the ones who refuse to have the vaccination. IDGAF because it's not affecting me. Only them. THEY will be the ones crying and moaning and blaming everyone but themselves though, if they take covid home to granny, and she dies.... Wink

Not usually

People aren’t trying to be morally superior if they wear one and not selfish or stupid if they don’t

A new stage where we get to do what we choose - finally

Lovesacake · 01/07/2021 11:22

@FlaminEckVera nope I’m not a man, if I was I would feel much more comfortable leaving the house with a full on board. As a woman I’d rather wear a face mask than deal with the endless plucking/shaving!

Lovesacake · 01/07/2021 11:23

*beard not board

JassyRadlett · 01/07/2021 11:24

I’m really glad the UK is opening up, I’m really glad the country I live in is also opening up. But no one has stopped for a moment to think how that will affect international reopening. Many, many millions of people will now have to wait another many months, or years, before seeing their loved ones again. I can travel all over the EU, I can travel to London to watch the football and wear no mask in a packed stadium. But I’m not allowed to go give my friend a hug, because it’s unsafe and, ‘delta’…

I'm one of those who hasn't seen my family in more than a year, and it's at least a year before I'll be technically allowed to see them again (and probably longer in practice).

I'm kind of hoping the UK's gung ho approach at this point will allow the virus now to rip through the population, bugger the short and medium term consequences.

I mean obviously I don't, because there's a lot of crap involved in that approach for all concerned in the short term until we get more second doses in arms.

But if this is the govt's approach that feels like my best case scenario endgame.

Because the masks protect other people so it does affect me.

A bit like I care about someone driving a car when they are drunk, as they are putting me at risk. I don't really care if someone wears a seatbelt though as they are only putting themselves at risk.

LadyBonnibel · 01/07/2021 11:26

It seems intuitive to me (and I realise that may mean nothing!) that a mask will limit the spread of larger droplets, and slow down your breath so it’s not going as far, especially if you shout, cough or sneeze. Not that it stops viruses from escaping, but it should reduce how far around you they spread and keep some of them trapped in the mask. But that might not have much impact on infection rates I suppose.

kindaclassy · 01/07/2021 11:26

same way as I care about CF parents sending kids to school with D&V. I do judge selfish twats who don't care about others, when it really takes no effort at all to wear the bloody thing.

It's not like anyone is asking you to give a kidney. Just put a mask, how hard can it be?

Pan2 · 01/07/2021 11:28

Another mad populist move from a mad populist government, and another we will all regret.

MarshaBradyo · 01/07/2021 11:29

I doubt anyone will start wearing one because mners berate them

If you want everyone to keep wearing masks it’s not going to happen. No point getting irate.

TurquoiseDragon · 01/07/2021 11:30

I''ll keep my masks to hand, since we could find ourselves having to wear them again, but I'll be glad to ditch them.

TheVampiresWife · 01/07/2021 11:30

And I would not ever challenge someone not wearing a mask.....But I do think when I see a non mask wearer 'it's your funeral. YOU will be the one catching covid if you have no mask on.'

I've been told repeatedly on here for a year now that wearing a mask protects others, not the wearer.

And just because you don't/can't wear a mask it doesn't inevitably follow that you (or anyone else) will catch covid.

Given so many have died I'm not sure your phrasing is terribly sensitive, either.

kindaclassy · 01/07/2021 11:32

I doubt anyone will start wearing one because mners berate them

Of course not, people have refused to wear mask since day 1, and they never had to.

It doesn't stop others shaking their head and pointing out how selfish and idiotic they are. We don't have to pretend to agree with them. I don't know anyone who actually enjoys wearing a mask, but it's such a small thing.

It’s changing now so you will be thinking this a lot. Your call but seems silly since it will no longer be mandatory.
Mickarooni · 01/07/2021 11:34

I understand that masks protect other people but me passing judgement about a random person in the supermarket or berating them online isn’t going to change anything or decrease risk levels. People are set in their ways. If they’re anti mask and/or anti vax, I may disagree but what good is my judgement going to do? All we can do is educate everyone and hope people make sensible decisions for themselves and for the good of society.

The virus doesn't spread on its own. It needs a carrier. Droplets of breath are one of those carriers.

The sort of people who shake their head and point out how selfish and idiotic someone is for not wearing a mask when they have no idea why someone is maskless are pretty awful, imo.
sillybut · 01/07/2021 11:40

I think I'll miss them. Being able to quietly swear at idiots and imbeciles without them seeing my lips moving has been a great improvement to my life.

seriously I think I'll be glad to get rid of the horrible things

roarfeckingroarr · 01/07/2021 11:40

I stopped wearing mine last weekend when the Hancock story broke and the original "freedom day" would have passed. Exceptions for the small pharmacy I visit and my manicurist because of closeness of proximity and (the latter) time in such proximity.

kindaclassy · 01/07/2021 11:45

MarshaBradyo

It never was mandatory, did you miss that?
Anyone could call themselves exempt, and no-one could enforce them.

I like the poster who sneezed on masks refusers Grin. After all, you can't control a sneeze can you?

I am talking about this forum, did you think I mean literally pointing at people? Hmm

People who can't wear masks tend to respect social distancing for a start...

It’s going to drop substantially post July 19 so if you shake your head each time you’re going to be doing it a lot more

”The sort of people who shake their head and point out how selfish and idiotic someone is for not wearing a mask when they have no idea why someone is maskless are pretty awful, imo.”

This is why I don’t think about it, especially when I’m out in public. Judging someone when I have no idea why they’re not wearing a mask isn’t a nice thing and also, it still doesn’t make me any safer!!
