I can't believe there are still people who decide that refusing to wear a mask because they don't feel like wearing one is a good enough reason.

We pretty much managed to crack down on seat belt refusers, it wouldn't be so hard to do the same with masks. And there are a few valid exemptions for seat belts..

Cam77 · 01/07/2021 10:43

@PickleSarnie
True. Reusable is more environmentally friendly. But I expect the total weight globally of disposable masks used the last 18 months is less than the weight of plastic tat sold in the UK at Christmas in a single year. People have died because of fussing and hestitancy over mask wearing.

osbertthesyrianhamster · 01/07/2021 10:45

Funny how up and arms some people were about single use plastics until fucking Covid came along.

swg1 · 01/07/2021 10:45

@Chatterbox1987 You might avoid them. I'm happy to quietly shift my shopping to shops only requiring masks or online shopping if necessary thanks. Besides anything else I outright do not have time to be out work two weeks with illness right now.

osbertthesyrianhamster · 01/07/2021 10:46

Evidence of people dying as the direct result of people around them not wearing a mask? Hmm

You can go without wearing a seatbelt. You might be fined, however.

I said from the beginning that I don't believe they are at all useful and in fact are detrimental to the cause the way the majority of people use them. Thorough hand washing and keeping out of people's space is more than enough. I can't participate in the theatre of something I truly believe is unhelpful to the pandemic.

Where did you do your degree in Epidemiology?

Lovemusic33 · 01/07/2021 10:53

I can’t wait not to have to wear one. It’s not just because they are uncomfortable, there are many reasons why I don’t want to wear one, I don’t believe the hugely reduce the infection rates, I think it’s awful that we can’t see people facial expressions (seeing some one smile makes me feel happy), I like to lip read and I like to see people’s faces.

I for one won’t be choosing to continue with wearing one.

I think people are being a bit crazy about all this now. More people are dying of other things right now, people dying of cancer because of late diagnosis, more people are taking their lives each day than are dying of covid. It’s time we learn to live with it and move on. You have more chance of being hit by a car than dying from covid.

LadyBonnibel · 01/07/2021 10:54

Slightly unrelated perhaps, but it amazes me how so many people have been wearing thick fabric unbreathable masks for more than 12 months. I tried one of my parents ones the other day and found it so stifling and was like “oh this is why people hate them!”. I struggled to keep it on for more than 10 minutes. Whereas I find many of the breathable and disposable light blue ones (cheap off Amazon) aren’t that uncomfortable at all for longer periods.

Because there is already more than enough non-recyclable plastic crap already in the giant mounds of landfill? hmm

Poncy alert. I make mine out of 2 layers of Liberty tana lawn. Washable and long lasting but also not too heavy.

The blue and white disposable ones are also actually washable and re-usable.

I still hate wearing them, especially as a specs wearer as you always get some steaming up. But I will still wear one in shops, on buses etc. I think the biggest difference for me will be that when I get that unbearable urge to rip it off I will be able to, instead of having to leave the shop/dive into the toilets.

I'm not going to tell you where I got my degrees or what they are in. Suffice to say that it is irrelevant. If everyone was only allowed to discuss or form opinions on those subjects in which they have degrees, Mumsnet wouldn't exist for starters.

I'm off out for lunch in the sunshine with friends now. Good luck to everyone in England. I hope the 19th brings big changes!

Lovesacake · 01/07/2021 10:58

I’d happily wear one forever, saves me having to deal with my beard before I leave the house 😂

FlaminEckVera · 01/07/2021 11:00

Dunno if it is true, but I will be glad when we don't HAVE to wear them, as it means I can go on a coach trip/train/bus/plane, etc and not be forced to wear a mask. I cannot go anywhere now unless I/we drive as I can't be in a situation where I have to wear a mask for potentially 3-4 hours or more, and are not allowed to remove it.

If we don't HAVE to wear a mask, I will still wear one most of the time, and as much as I am able, but it will be great to know I can legally take it off if I need to.

Hope that makes sense!!!

Medics learn early in their training that simple masks can protect very well against bacteria. But viruses are so small that simple face coverings rarely make a difference.
Surgical grade face coverings can provide a huge amount of protection from viruses and bacteria. But these are made from very dense material and I have NEVER seen anyone in a public setting wear one.
There isn't any data at all to show that normal masks that we all wear for the supermarket have decreased the spread of covid in any country. If you disbelieve me, try looking at the graphs showing cases in any country and tell me if you can spot when face masks became mandated.
What I haven't seen, and what I would like to, is data about the rate of infection among say supermarket staff before and after the masks came into play.

Like a previous poster , I have also noticed that the media and political narrative seems to have changed to 'wear your mask to reassure others' rather than 'to stop or slow the spread'.

I don't believe masks are harmful however ... Haven't seen any decent studies at all suggesting that. Just there isn't any data at all that they are helping.

FlaminEckVera · 01/07/2021 11:02

@apocalypsehow I agree. One doesn't need a degree in a particular subject to know anything about it!

LibertyRose · 01/07/2021 11:04

Also , whilst I disagree that masks seem to be affecting the spread, and I do dislike wearing mine, particularly outside of work , like previous posters, I have been grateful for the lack of facial hair grooming I have needed to do when popping into a shop Grin

With me, it's been great not having to be arsed with putting on make up. Just a bit of eyeliner. Also, I haven't had a single cold or sniffle since I started wearing a mask. So they do protect against all sorts of germs.
FlaminEckVera · 01/07/2021 11:06

I meant to say eyeliner AND eyeshadow. ^

FlaminEckVera · 01/07/2021 11:06

Also mean to add ^ I started wearing a mask last April! (2020.)

I found the opposite! Because half your face is covered, I found I have to put on a lot more eye make-up than I normally would.

Mickarooni · 01/07/2021 11:12

Do people really care that much what other people do or don’t do?! I don’t look at non mask wearers and think anything, it wouldn’t cross my mind to wonder why. Equally, if people want to wear masks when it’s not mandatory then that’s their choice. Neither hurts me because I’ll continue to socially distance. I hate people in my personal space anyway, so as long as they’re not breathing down my neck (mask or no mask!) I don’t care what others do.

TheVampiresWife · 01/07/2021 11:17

People who are exempt aren't 'refusing' to wear masks, they can't wear masks. You cited 'extreme reasons' - what do you consider these to be? And what gives you the right to determine whether someone's reason for exemption is 'extreme' enough?

And how do you propose to 'crack down' on those not wearing masks?
