Hong Kong is banning all flights from the UK - we are considered an extremely high risk country.

JustDanceAddict · 29/06/2021 08:51

We are more high risk to countries whose vaccination schedule isn’t as far along as ours.

Naggety · 29/06/2021 08:54

It seems crazy to have the Euro finals at Wembley at this point.

Schulte · 29/06/2021 08:55

According to German authorities’ estimates, about half of all new Covid cases there are already the delta variant. By next week, it will be the dominant strain in Germany. So Merkel is too late.

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 29/06/2021 08:56

Funny how the football crowds are. I problem for her and how officials are able to hop from country to country.

Also Delta already is in Europe, they just don’t sequence test as much as we do.

But yes, ban the British tourists. Hmm

Schulte · 29/06/2021 08:56

Agreed, but only because of our high case numbers.
Kendodd · 29/06/2021 09:00

I agree, too late.
If we had been responsible we would have closed our own borders to stop it escaping to other countries (as should have India).

IncessantNameChanger · 29/06/2021 09:03

It will all change again as soon as delta hits them and yet another variant gets going. It's all very transient now.

Anyway if we wanted to doors to India shut sooner, this is just the same. She is acting on what most brits wanted with Delta.

Except I guess it was more important family matters necessitating travel to India. I suspect more EU has more holiday flights.

Summer abroad isnt going to happen I dont think

thecatsatonthewall · 29/06/2021 09:04

Any EU citizen coming to the UK has to isolate/test etc.

so why the fuck is there this british exceptionalism that we should somehow be except from this if we go abroad?

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 29/06/2021 09:04

If we had been responsible we would have closed our own borders to stop it escaping to other countries (as should have India).

We have, in a way. You have the self isolate on return to the U.K. and that’s a big deterrent to travel.
But did Merkel and Co isolate when they came here for the summit? Or when they got back to their countries? Did they heck.

candycane222 · 29/06/2021 09:04

On the other hand, she is in good time for the next , more vaccine resistant variant to be brewed up by infectious UK schoolkids and their vaccinated relatives mixing up every variation of covid and seeing which one transmits best.

I mean, that's how vaccine resistance starts, lots of infections testing themselves out against vaccinated and (espet?) semi-vaccinated adults. Much the same as antibacterial resistance flourishing where there's lots of people (or livestock) with antibiotic in their bloodstream, mingling away.

Javid apparently belives you can end the pandemic simply by saying it's over. Not an encouraging start.

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 29/06/2021 09:06

Except I guess it was more important family matters necessitating travel to India. I suspect more EU has more holiday flights.

Holidays are just as much a family matter as any other, weddings for example.

thecatsatonthewall · 29/06/2021 09:07

You mean like our officials do or the POTUS ?

Or how a so called "Green summit" had a Red Arrows display

Try a little more objectivity, rather than the usual EU hate

I was going to mention I read that here: www.reuters.com/world/europe/cases-caused-by-more-infectious-delta-variant-more-than-double-germany-2021-06-28/.

Not the first politician to think so.

Sparklingbrook · 29/06/2021 09:09

The exact same thread was started yesterday morning and ended up getting deleted...

dreamingbohemian · 29/06/2021 09:09

The whole world is restricting travel from the UK, it's not just Germany. Can't really blame them!

Schulte · 29/06/2021 09:11

Variants will always spread, you can’t keep borders closed indefinitely. Testing people when they return from places with higher Covid rates makes sense, not so sure about quarantining the fully vaccinated though. That seems totally OTT.

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 29/06/2021 09:12

I don’t hate the EU, I voted Remain and I came here many years ago from Germany. I have relatives in Austria and Russia. I haven’t seen them since this all started. It doesn’t stop me from seeing when EU leaders are wrong.

Throwing around hate accusations might make you feel better, but it won’t make you right.

Kendodd · 29/06/2021 09:14

Bollocks are they important.
That's why we're in this mess (the whole world not just the UK) people thinking they're so special and important they have to travel across the globe.

TheresWaldo · 29/06/2021 09:15

I've been longing to come back to UK and see my family but its 10 days quarantine each way so not feasible. Why should people expect travellers from EU/World to repeatedly test and quarantine in UK and not the other way round? Oh cos they want to go on holiday?

JosephineDeBeauharnais · 29/06/2021 09:18

Merkel can try all she likes, it’s a sovereign decision and Spain for one is dead against it - they want and need our tourism.

thecatsatonthewall · 29/06/2021 09:18

It doesn't make me feel better, its just that if there is an opportunity to have a go at the EU, whilst ignoring the hypocrisy of ourselves or other non EU countries, you are often at the forefront.

The G7 was a lesson in "do as i say, not what i do" by every single country there, EU included but others too.

As is this criticism of Germany seeking tighter UK tourism, ignoring our rules on EU visitors coming here.
