@ancientgran uk and Denmark are the ones sequencing the most. Uk sequences nearly 90%

PatrickTheFox · 29/06/2021 17:00

@ancientgran I completely agree. I just find it frustrating to hear "In France they are doing this" or "In Germany they are doing that" as if (a) that means it is right and (b) they don't have some ulterior motive. I didn't mean to imply that we shouldn't expect integrity from our politicians just that we shouldn't assume it in politicians in other countries.

Delatron · 29/06/2021 17:01

@walksen but the Delta variant is already in those countries. And they are not in lockdown? So it’s inevitable it will spread. So shutting borders to certain countries (like us) is a bit late. No they are not being novel. They are making the exact same mistake we made. Shutting the door after the horse has bolted.

ancientgran · 29/06/2021 17:04

Govt press released on 27th June says we have sequenced 500,000 samples. That can't be 90%

ancientgran · 29/06/2021 17:07

Just reread it, I think they mean 500,000 in a day.

In January Iceland were reported to have sequenced 100% of positive covid tests. We weren't even sequencing any at the beginning were we?

January 2021?

There was a link where the sequencing plan and how it had increased during the pandemic was explaining

Wakeupin2022 · 29/06/2021 17:11

Ancient no I think its 500k in total.

And the UK does about 50% of the sequencing worldwide.

Which is shocking really. Good for us in the UK, but poor show US and others who really should do better.

It can't be 500k/day, only positive cases are sequenced. We used to be top in the world with about 10%, so could be total.
EasterIssland · 29/06/2021 19:25

I read Hugo mentioning that uk was now sequencing 88% of the positives few weeks ago

Kendodd · 29/06/2021 21:55

did you see Boris's speech at the G7 on building back better?

He looked half cut, dribbled on about building back green/back gender neutral/back feminine etc

I've started to think Johnson actually has a speech impediment. He definitely stammers a lot and can't get his words out properly.
This is no excuse for his dishevelled appearance though.

Ha ha! the PM certainly has a loose acquittance with the truth & clearly has issues with his memory.

But if he wants too, he can be very clear and precise, the rest of the time its an act, as is his appearance, just like Farage, a carefully cultivated one.

Weren't there rumours a while back he had Long Covid?

I wouldn't be surprised. Another poster did the maths yesterday and worked out over 50% of people who've had Covid develop Long Covid.

I wish we had Angela Merkel in charge over here. Perhaps her and Biden can come and take over temporarily.

Honey12346 · 29/06/2021 22:13

@Wakeupin2022

Can I just point out that USA has had its borders closed to us since last year!

No sign of them opening anytime soon.......

So what is the difference between Merkel and Biden?

They are world leaders and as such when travelling in that capacity should be exempt.

If it was Merkel coming here on holiday then of course she should not be exempt.

This isn't about the G7. This is about a variant that is out control in the UK and no quite as out of control in the EU next.

I don't see how Brits are getting embarrassed. If I was an leader of a different EU country then I may be annoyed that she is trying to tell them what to do.

But British public anger- absolutely not justified!

This isn't true, I have several friends who were on holiday in New York in the last few months

Merkel had AZ for her first jab. She chose to have a mRNA (Moderna) for her second. Perhaps she saw the study reported on in this article.

Covid: Two Oxford vaccines produce low level of antibodies against Delta variant, study shows

50 out of 117 Delta deaths in the UK were double vaccinated. I think we need to know which vaccines they received.

They must be US citizens or residents. America is shut to UK travellers.

Honey here is the entry requirements.

Uk citizens living in the UK cannot just holiday in USA!

Knowing the vaccine won't tell you what you need to know. You also need to know did they have underlying conditions that would have resulted in a less robust response to whichever vaccine they had. You also need to know whether they would have had a better response with a different vaccine.

Watapalava · 29/06/2021 22:37

Of course vaccinated die

And they will
Continue as roll out expands - with high levels of vaccine uptake the majority eventually who die will be vaccinated - 84% have had one vaccine so most people dying now will have had a vaccine

That’s how it works!

The numbers will be crazy low tho compared to no vaccine as data curreny shows

20,000 annual deaths in vaccinated people when fully open is still much less than the 130,000 we had this past year in unvaccinated people with lockdown/restrictions

We are not going for zero covid

Tealightsandd · 29/06/2021 22:43

With the news about AZ lower efficacy, it will tell us quite a lot of what we need to know actually.

It will tell us if we need to give AZ people a mRNA booster.

OchonAgusOchonOh · 29/06/2021 22:48

It will tell us if we need to give AZ people a mRNA booster.

In and of itself, it would be an inefficient measure. If they all had underlying conditions that impacted their vaccine response, then a targetted programme of giving those who fit the profile an mRNA vaccine. You need more information to build up the profile than just which vaccine was given to those who died.

Tealightsandd · 29/06/2021 23:20

It's really very simple.

Recent reports show that AZ is less effective against the now dominant in the UK Delta strain.

We need to know ifthe double vaccinated deaths are in people who had AZ.

And tbh even without that data, given the news about AZ, it's obvious we should be looking at giving mRNA boosters to AZ people.

Tealightsandd · 29/06/2021 23:22

Some people with underlying conditions have had Pfizer, some have had AZ.

If (and I emphasise, 'if') the double vaccinated deaths are mostly or all AZ people, that very strongly indicates that we need to mRNA booster AZ people.

OchonAgusOchonOh · 29/06/2021 23:28

We need to know ifthe double vaccinated deaths are in people who had AZ.

You need a full profile of those who died. The vaccine used will be just one piece of data making up that profile. With a full profile, you can take a targetted approach to ensure those most vulnerable get the mRNA first. If you only focus on the vaccine used, you will be taking a scatter gun approach with the mRNA vaccine.

A targetted approach will save more lives.

And tbh even without that data, given the news about AZ, it's obvious we should be looking at giving mRNA boosters to AZ people.

Yes, I agree. However, it makes sense to do so for the more vulnerable first.

Watapalava · 29/06/2021 23:40

Oh for god sake

If we need to know that data we will be told

Youre acting like we are a member of sage

You are literally adding 2+2 and getting 5 at this moment

If it’s important we will have a booster otherwise chill out about it
