I could understand Merkel's POV better if she hadn't gone to the G7 and then not quarantined for 14 days like every other German must. She will see Johnson in London on 2nd July. Presumably no quarantine then either. Lost quite a bit of respect for her TBH.

Delatron · 29/06/2021 14:28

She’s a bit late. Why do Europe think they’re immune from any variant? They should focus on their vaccination program really as there will always be variants.

I do think we are being penalised for our ridiculously high testing (mainly of healthy children) and the fact our genome sequencing is the best in the world. What is the point in doing this sequencing though when you fail to act quickly (India/red list). Though it would have arrived here anyway. Just like it has in Europe and even in the impenetrable Australia.

MountainDweller · 29/06/2021 14:29

Why do people keep on referring to her as Madame Merkel - have I missed something?
Foreign languages not a big thing in the UK?

Surely she should be Frau Merkel?

Naggety · 29/06/2021 14:33

Why do you think they are not?

Naggety · 29/06/2021 14:34

Sorry, you're right. It's the molecolare that is the PCR.
👍I'd forgotten about the molecolare!

How do you hold leaders like Merkel to higher standards than ours who also do not isolate when returning from foreign shores? Mr Gove for example.

Europe needs to introduce tight restrictions, as we demand of their citizens when coming to the UK.

Bloomsbury45 · 29/06/2021 14:38

But, it's massively hypocritical of Merkel to object to travel unless she did full quarantine upon return to Germany. If she did, then fair enough

Of course she did not quarantine after G7 - despite having had only one vaccine at the time - because the legislation exempts politicians. She is also going to Chequers this weekend to see Boris - and neither she nor her entourage will quarantine on return. Ditto for the Euro2020 people.

Meanwhile German residents who have been to UK to bury close relatives have to do 14 days house arrest on return.

EasterIssland · 29/06/2021 14:46

@thecatsatonthewall the situation from Gove and Merkel are different, and I dont like merkle

But Gove didnt have to self isolate because he was coming from abroad as Portugal was green at the time, he had to isolate because of contact with a positive and he took part of a research where 40k people have taken part that they self test every day to check they dont have the virus. Some posters From mn were also taking part of this research. Because of this research fully vaccinate people will be allowed in the future not to self isolate but self test

Merkle had been to the UK which the uk considers amber and didnt isolate on arrival, she didnt isolate neither on return to Germany despite she was coming from a dangerous country as per country.

notimagain · 29/06/2021 14:47

@Schulte

‘Certainly right now if somebody living in certain EU countries wants to visit the UK (e.g. to see relatives) the big, big problem is the UKs Amber list restrictions, not the requirements on return to the EU.’

Not true. It will be harder for me to go to Germany than to come back. And the same goes for some other countries - Netherlands, Belgium, Austria and Switzerland, for a start.

@PuffinShop now I want to move to Iceland!

Well it most certainly can be true, depends on the country.

The UK>France requirement for example ATM for a fully vaccinated adult is a PCR test within 72 hours of travel, no quarantine…that’s it.

However travel to the UK from France remains problematic because of the UK’s Amber list requirements.

Naggety · 29/06/2021 14:54

I don't think its hypocritical. I would hope that some people would be exempt.

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 29/06/2021 14:58

Why should she be exempt?

She can meet Boris on zoom, someone who needs to bury a loved cannot.

Also, the football can be watched on the telly, instead of having thousands of fans, officials, teams and what not cross cross Europe.

thecatsatonthewall · 29/06/2021 15:05

the point is no leader attending the G7 isolated, including Biden why single out Merkel?

Gove got inc in a trial so he didn't have to isolate and i wonder if Raab plus any other UK official will isolate after the foreign ministers meeting in Rome?

is Biden requesting the rest of the countries to request quarantine to the British ?
ChardonnaysPetDragon · 29/06/2021 15:08

Because Biden isn’t trying to prevent me from going to the beach..

BarefootHippieChick · 29/06/2021 15:11

@NannyAndJohn

I'll say it once again - we're the laughing stock of the entire world.

Ashamed to be British.

This is ridiculously over dramatic. I think the entire world has more important things to focus on in their own countries than what the British are doing.
thecatsatonthewall · 29/06/2021 15:12

No idea but as Merkel is part of the EU, she can voice her opinion, Biden does wants the UK to take back ISIS prisoners from Iraq!

As i said early, the UK demands quarantining from the vast majority of citizens from across the world, inc most EU ones, despite far lower infection rates than here, why shouldn't the EU do similar?

Really don't understand the outrage because the anger should be directed at the UK for having a ridiculous foreign travel policy, one that, doubtless, will allow MPs to go abroad in August.

Dr Merkel. If you must.
Peachi82 · 29/06/2021 15:30

It is possible that she stayed for the G7 under 72 hours and I think then the rules are different. Not sure.

I am set on travelling to see my mum this summer (because it is essential, for my mind, for her mind, for my son, for the rest of my family) and we are currently looking at 24 days quarantine. Absolutely rubbish.

grapewine · 29/06/2021 15:31

Why do Europe think they’re immune from any variant? They should focus on their vaccination program really as there will always be variants.

Why would you assume that's not what they're doing? That's certainly the case in Denmark. No one here thinks they're immune from anything.

LivinLaVidaLoki · 29/06/2021 15:32

In a way Nanny is right. Some countries are laughing at us, but not for what you would think.

They are laughing at the fact that our press and public are behaving like the sky is falling in because of the Delta variant, whereas the news in quite a few other countries is that yes, it is more transmissible but the vaccines hold up well against it. Much more measured than what we have.

I was reading yesterday that Singapore is going to stop counting the cases/day and giving info about corona, will live with the virus once a good percentage of people are vaccinated.

cant wait for that to happen here. fed up of this corona-media

LivinLaVidaLoki · 29/06/2021 15:34

This is sooooo true!

Watching the Tour de France, packed road side crowds, EU citizens fiiling up the hotels along the Med.

Meanwhile we are stuck here, dependant on the whims of our esteemed leaders.

Wakeupin2022 · 29/06/2021 15:44

Can I just point out that USA has had its borders closed to us since last year!

No sign of them opening anytime soon.......

So what is the difference between Merkel and Biden?

They are world leaders and as such when travelling in that capacity should be exempt.

If it was Merkel coming here on holiday then of course she should not be exempt.

This isn't about the G7. This is about a variant that is out control in the UK and no quite as out of control in the EU next.

I don't see how Brits are getting embarrassed. If I was an leader of a different EU country then I may be annoyed that she is trying to tell them what to do.

But British public anger- absolutely not justified!
