So St Ives now had case rate of 800 plus per 100000, surely this is a mistake?

I thought everyone was testing, quarantined, tested again, vaccinating and following social distancing? Are these local people who have tested positive now whilst everyone else has gone back off in their jets? How could this have been allowed to happen. I know I shouldn't be, but I am really shocked to see such a huge increase so soon after all the important meetings.

It's a few days old, but Cornwall is seeing a spike, attributed to holidaymakers and G6. But the actual numbers are low as it's not densely populated

Imfedupwithallofthis · 20/06/2021 16:25

According to gov.uk map for St Ives and Halsetown -
Cases 64 Previous week 6, increase of 966.7%
Case rate per 100,000 people - 920.1

Absolutely appalling

lightand · 20/06/2021 16:29

It was always going to happen.

Cases spread further afield now in Cornwall, than just St Ives.
Again, absolutely inevitable.

lightand · 20/06/2021 16:30

Do you think all people follow the rules? Especially the rich?!
Not that it was only just them there.
Weeks of work beforehand went on, to get ready.
People pulled in from , well, everywhere.

EssentialHummus · 20/06/2021 16:31

Just inevitable. We travel, the virus travels. Why is it still a surprise (to the gov’t, especially)?

3cats2kids · 20/06/2021 16:34

Cornwall is packed with tourists. It’s no wonder. I believe it’s more widespread than is being reported, as well, as I keep hearing about people testing positive.

Foxhasbigsocks · 20/06/2021 16:38

Oh dear!!! We are due to go soon

EasterIssland · 20/06/2021 16:40

Only 1 person I. Hospital in all the Cornish trusts

newnortherner111 · 20/06/2021 16:41

There was no need to hold the G7 summit in person. Joe Biden and Emmanuel Macron did not need to come all this way to tell Boris Johnson he is absolutely useless.

Though the spread no doubt came from all the police who had to travel there to protect the world leaders.

ShockOche · 20/06/2021 16:44

“Cornwall is packed with tourists”

It was packed with tourists last year= no spike

The spikes are in St Ives, Falmouth and Newquay - all areas where the G7 was and not in Padstow, Penzance, Looe where the G7 was not.

Plus the places with spikes had no tourists over the period, precisely because of the G7…

WeirdArchitecture · 20/06/2021 16:45

Im wondering if increases have now spread to the Lake District. Im there and havent even checked yet.

ive got family in wigan and apparently it is increasing there by 31% per week. it seems to die down then just shoot right up again. no tourism to blame for that though.

MustardRose · 20/06/2021 16:49

Not to mention our own military intelligence people, the security service from each of the countries, and all the drivers, caterers, tv crews, journalists and other associated workers.

SachaStark · 20/06/2021 16:52

I’m in Cornwall. It’s well known locally that several of the police officers who were drafted in tested positive shortly after they arrived for G7 duty.

As there was no space to house the extra police officers (nor the media, nor most of the extra people brought in… honestly, why the fuck didn’t they just hold it in London, which actually has the infrastructure for this kind of event?!), they were all being kept on a ship in Falmouth harbour. And we all know from last year how fast the virus can spread through a ship.

So, several police officers test positive on a ship, and then the rest are all out and about for duty across the county. And now our numbers are ratcheting up, just in time for our tourist season to start properly in a couple of weeks.

So many restaurants and pubs in Falmouth are shut at the moment. It’s all very demoralising.

This isn't an ordinary year, we have far more tourists here. The caravan parks are packed even before the school holidays start.
The 'paid for' distractions - National Trust, RHS, cinema, mini theme parks are reduced capacity so families are bored and using the shops for entertainment.
Locals are turning every shed and patch of grass into a crappy, overpriced glamping experience.
All of this is staffed by year 11 &13 year old who've finished school and are earning £5 an hour.
We've had two serious robberies in town, buried BBQs on the beach and so, so much litter.
I want another lock down announced before the school holidays start.

I presume you're only hoping for a local lockdown, why would you want the rest of us to suffer?

Yes, we’ve had a lot of messages from Cumbria public health about being careful and PCR tests for all between 12-30.
Kacha30 · 20/06/2021 17:43

Is the g7 fully to blame? Only because cases were rising before the g7. Cornwall was insanely busy during half term prior to the g7. In Cornwall many of the Touristy areas have increased cases particularly amongst those who work in hospitality.

I live in Cornwall have done my whole life. I never seen it as busy as May/June half term before! Usually it quietens down a little between half term and the summer holidays but it's so busy out there now. It's so unfair that locals are paying the price. It's not the tourists fault it's the holiday parks and tourists destinations who aren't even working at less capacity as they did last year. I know they want to make money after the poop year we've had but it's madness out there. I am very anxious about it.

Lockdowns aren’t something you stick on a wish list when the people in your vicinity do things you don’t like Confused
PracticingPerson · 20/06/2021 17:46

Absolutely awful for Cornwall, they had really escaped for so long, then Johnson personally causes this just as we are getting near the end game Angry

Cases are rising in padstow and other areas but the cluster data on the gov website is 5/6 days behind today's date I believe so it will be higher in a few days!

It's busier this year too. It was busy last year, this year has been rammed during half term. Plus everyone was still being pretty good at social distancing last year and this year it seems to have gone through the window!

FuzzyPuffling · 20/06/2021 17:54

It is certainly extremely busy in Cornwall at the moment. Everywhere is jam packed, it's almost impossible to go about your daily business and friends of ours who have a restaurant have said that this May was more like August.

We usually elect to stay at home a lot in July and August, but it has started very very early this year, and it looks as though there won't even be an autumn respite.

There is definitely an attitude amongst some tourists that "Theme Park Cornwall" is somehow immune from Covid infections. We've all got examples.

newnortherner111 · 20/06/2021 17:57

@PracticingPerson so Cornwall joins the list of people betrayed by the Prime Minister, including those in fishing, farmers, the people of Northern Ireland, two wives and Jennifer Arcuri and the other women he has had extra-marital affairs with.

Brokenrecord3006 · 20/06/2021 17:59

It's annoying that Cornwall has managed through it all so well, despite being packed with tourists. Then g7 comes along and, ta da. Here's covid!

My tiny area on the map is still at 0-3 cases but it's spreading across to us each day. When cases picked up suddenly in January they dropped again really quick. We've got a good vaccination rate so hopefully we can ride through it.

PrincessNutNuts · 20/06/2021 18:07

Last summer it was original covid.

This is delta.

motogogo · 20/06/2021 18:09

We've now got a rate of 260, but it's only 11 cases, all high school students who went to a party apparently. Numbers can be deceiving
