Was it wise to have a football match in a pandemic?

Hope they have a good time

And not too much hugging 🙄

@extravirginoliveoil

Wimbledon is going ahead. With a full crowd.

If money pays and faces fit, there is no issue. Same as the BBQ last week.

If the game was in Scotland, there would be thousands of a English fans in Scotland tonight. Folk are fed up. Sick of being lied to with one set of rules for one and another for someone else. Money talks.

They could have stopped the trains and planes going to London but then the fans would just have driven.

Wimbledon is going ahead with 50% capacity at the start, gradually increasing to 100% for the finals weekend. It won't be a full crowd for the whole fortnight. It's going ahead as part of the Events Research Programme, and all ticket holders will need to show proof of either double vaccination or a negative lateral flow test. There will be social distancing in the grounds when not on the courts. People at Wimbledon will drink alcohol but they won't be falling down drunk, vomiting everywhere, fighting and being violent. It's very different to 20,000 football fans with unknown covid and vaccination status, and no tickets for the event they are interested in, descending on London.

@UpSlyDown that’s what I do when I go to restaurants, I’m not doing track and trace

It's no different people going to London when I was in the West Country at half term - along with 120,000 others. So many people went all over the country on holiday

London has been so quiet, there are no bloody tourists - there's plenty of room

RaraRachael · 18/06/2021 19:54

Emm....no!
It is the fault of the organisers not providing a fan zone.

There's a fan zone in Glasgow. Those who don't have tickets could have gone there. Don't see why London should have provided one for people who were told by the Scottish government not to travel. Hmm

MaloInAnAppleTree · 18/06/2021 19:55

I’m not that exercised about outdoor gatherings, and I generally have a soft spot for Scotland fans who tend to be rowdy but harmless and generally are out for a good time rather than a fight. Let’s hope that it pans out that way tonight.

But I did a huge Hmm at the plane full of fans singing Yes Sir I Can Boogy at the top of their voice in an extremely small space in the plane down to London. I know planes are meant to have excellent air common but still…

I really wouldn’t want to be on a train full of fans going back home tomorrow.

LaurieFairyCake · 18/06/2021 19:56

The fan zone in Glasgow is busy too

Lockheart · 18/06/2021 19:56

I've just seen a video of some twat playing bagpipes on the tube. What the fuck possesses them to play something that loud in a small enclosed space?

Tealightsandd · 18/06/2021 19:56

Imagine being the parent of a CEV or CV child in London?

No vaccines for under 16s yet in the UK (unlike France, America, Israel, Singapore, UAE etc).

Bad enough for the (millions) of vulnerable adults in London. Particularly the immunosuppresssed for whom vaccines might not be very effective.

RaspberryCoulis · 18/06/2021 20:00

Don't care about football and don't care about this to be honest, of course people were going to travel and there's no law stopping them doing so.

I am worried however that Saint Nicola of Covid will use any increase in numbers after this match - irrespective of whether there are more people in hospital - to keep us locked up EVEN LONGER.

Tealightsandd · 18/06/2021 20:00

There are tourists. Not all in London. Some probably went to other parts of the UK.

It was something like 8000 a day arriving at the airports throughout lockdowns (and onto the busy public transport). That's just the tourist numbers btw. Obviously lots of other travel too.

Haudyourwheesht · 18/06/2021 20:00

I also hate this passive aggressive little face. Hmm

ButteringMyArse · 18/06/2021 20:01

The women travelled from Ashby to Foremarke reservoir. They shouldn't have done that at the time.

Quick correction, they were fine to do so. The stay local stuff was guidance not law, and it wasn't illegal to travel for exercise. This is why Derbyshire ended up rescinding the fines, extremely reluctantly.

Bloodyfuckit · 18/06/2021 20:01

@osbertthesyrianhamster

OMG, people having fun! The sky will fall.
It's absolutely not about that. I'm all for having fun. It's about the double standards. Women protest in London about the murder of a young woman by a policeman and are treated to the full force of the law. Thousands of dickhead men from Scotland travel to London to get pissed, fight and create havoc and the police standby and do nothing. It's fucking appalling.
Tealightsandd · 18/06/2021 20:02

And less extremely busy than usual is far from the same as quiet.

LaurieFairyCake · 18/06/2021 20:02

I was in central London on Monday and there was practically no one there. I have to go into zone 1 3 times a week and it's empty, been literally empty for a year

BogRollBOGOF · 18/06/2021 20:03

I'm beyond fed up of the double standards.

You can go to watch a sport, but god forbid you should want to keep yourself healthy by running a race/ parkrun.

The 95yo Queen can mingle with world leaders, but parents on the playground are still nagged about SD and wearing facerags despite being double vaccinated.

Vigils/ protests banned and over-policed but football crowds overlooked.

Families deprived of practical access to see family with quarantines and umpteen PCRs, VIPs given free passes to go pretty much anywhere they like.

I'm all for people having a good time. We should all be able to have a good time.

That's how I feel about it too but it does seem almost frenzied. The party started yesterday and been going on all day. I think for many they've made the trip down their big getaway after so long living with restrictions and no international travel. Glad it's raining here and not like the hot evenings earlier in the week.

Everydayiwakeupanditsmonday · 18/06/2021 20:06

Its almost like nothing was learned from Cheltenham going ahead at the start of all this…

Yes yes yes
Tealightsandd · 18/06/2021 20:07

The 95yo Queen can mingle with world leaders

No conspiracy about that. You will note that she didn't mingle with mass crowds at Ascot.

She was safe to meet the very small group of fully vaccinated world leaders. She wasn't safe to go to the large gathering that was Ascot. And so she didn't go.

Gilly12345 · 18/06/2021 20:07

I think it’s ok to have a football match, what I think is stupid is the people who don’t have tickets coming to London, just to drink and watch the match in a pub for fan zone.

@Whydidimarryhim

What is it with this government and protecting predominantly men and their sports. There where 3 events just prior to the first lockdown that spread the disease which the experts said they could go ahead and now it continues. It must be money but I’m wondering if it was a women’s sporting event would it be locked down. Dick heads!!!
I would bet my house that it would be veto'd if it was a female-dominated sport.
Haudyourwheesht · 18/06/2021 20:08

I think since then they learned to make covid vaccinations. So not exactly nothing.
