Was it wise to have a football match in a pandemic?

@NearlyAlwaysInsane

They could have stopped the trains and planes going to London but then the fans would just have driven.

Yes, because nobody else needs to use trains and planes apart from football fans. This sounds like a suggestion straight out of North Korea.

If it was that important to stop thousands of fans, mostly in football colours then yes, they could have denied boarding.
mrshoho · 18/06/2021 19:37

We've been seeing the fans in person and on the TV reports today and last night. I'm surprised the police have allowed some of it to continue especially when they have been getting into the general public's personal space. Alcohol on both sides is fuelling it. So irresponsible to be encouraging it from early morning. Dread later on. I normally love watching it. The news about these VIPs coming for the finals will be interesting to follow. If they are given a free pass and excused of having to quarantine then we all may as well say fuck it.

I don't know what Nicola Sturgeon would have to say if it were the other way round and 30000 English fans had descended on Glasgow. She seems very quiet today.

Attestations. Written statement explaining who you are, where you live, and why you're out. That's what the French (and Spanish?) used during their lockdown.

So were these fans actually doing anything illegal by travelling? Stupid, yes, but illegal?

And if not, what is the basis for stopping them?

PurpleHoodie · 18/06/2021 19:39

Adopted I'm old used to it Grin

Unsure33 · 18/06/2021 19:39

@OhYouBadBadKitten

But they are not allowed . They are breaking the rules .

How are the police suddenly going to cope with 20000 people that are not even supposed to be here ?

AbsolutelyPatsy · 18/06/2021 19:39

I am glad i or my dd dont live in london anymore today!

AdoptedBumpkin · 18/06/2021 19:40

As far as I am aware you can travel legally between Scotland and England. So they are allowed.

We're not in a lockdown. And this is not France or Spain Hmm.

And this was during the strictest parts of the lockdown. Not when most restrictions have been lifted.

That’s my point. It’s not illegal for them to travel. They were advised not to if they didn’t have a ticket but decided to go anyway. There is nothing illegal about being in London.

If the Nicola Sturgeon and Boris didn’t want them to travel, restrictions should have been put in place because frankly, if they didn’t expect this, they are wired to the moon.

frysturkishdelight · 18/06/2021 19:43

@MarshaBradyo

I don’t care about crowds but I could weep at the dc at our school isolating for ten days in contrast due to one case

Also I was thinking about the speed at which government responded to that super football threat v various pandemic situations

This in absolute spades. I'm sick to death of double standards.
frysturkishdelight · 18/06/2021 19:44

@Baileysforchristmas

And children are having to isolate for 10 days when there’s nothing wrong with them. I don’t care about people enjoying themselves, I do care there is different rues for different people. We’re not all in it together.
Absolutely. And school staff.
AbsolutelyPatsy · 18/06/2021 19:44

it is only Scotland , at least they have not come from the rest of the world, looking on the bright side.

i bet the media love showing the fans, hyping it up, hoping for frothers.

Exactly.

This is the UK. With the highest numbers of cases in Europe. And the fastest rise.

Too right we're not France or Spain.

Unlike them, we're on the red list for many. places including America and Ireland. We are a high risk country that others are restricting entry from.

They're allowed. Hmm I'm going to England next week. I'm driving, though, because I CBAd with masks and police and shite (it's cheaper, too).

RaraRachael · 18/06/2021 19:46

I'm so pissed off with all these people who were told not to travel if they didn't have tickets.

I've booked a much delayed family celebration to Glasgow in a couple of weeks' time and will be beyond angry if I have to change my plans because these idiots cause an upsurge Angry

DumplingsAndStew · 18/06/2021 19:46

And yet my daughter still can't meet with her friends

Haudyourwheesht · 18/06/2021 19:47

@Lockheart

They can bully women for going for a walk in a beauty spot, but heaven forbid that the men can't do what they want when it's football related.

If you're referring to the incident with Derbyshire Police, I'm not sure how much help they'd be given that this is between Scotland and London...

Also the restrictions were very much still in place then.

I fucking hate false equivalencies. It's been the false equivalency epidemic.

UpSlyDown · 18/06/2021 19:49

It’s ridiculous. Why on earth the fans travelled down with no tickets is beyond me. The fact that the government allows this makes the restrictions a farce. I pretend to login on the track and trace app and never do the PCR tests any more. I’m not self isolating for 10 days ‘just in case’ multiple times when idiots are allowed to do stuff like this.

frysturkishdelight · 18/06/2021 19:49

Transition to school and secondary school - cancelled
Sports days - cancelled

Thousands of children and school staff isolating and forced to be part of a large bubble which will make them have to isolate for 10 days.

The constant fear of isolation, of not being able to plan anything.

No money for mitigation in schools.

When do our children get prioritised?

PomRuns · 18/06/2021 19:50

Nicola is very quiet - most unusual.

neveradullmoment99 · 18/06/2021 19:50

@24hoursfromtulsa

'A football match' - you do realise there is a whole tournament taking place?

This is entirely the fault of the Scottish fans, travelling down in huge numbers when they had no tickets to the match or indeed to any organised screenings. Bloody idiots.

Emm....no! It is the fault of the organisers not providing a fan zone.
Haudyourwheesht · 18/06/2021 19:51

There's been a big radio campaign (in Scotland anyway) urging people to visit London. I noticed as I considered taking the kids at some point.

Some folk have taken them up on it. Grin
