Was it wise to have a football match in a pandemic?

@the80sweregreat

Why come down without a ticket? .. I'm bemused by it all
Why come down without a ticket?

I can think of LOADS of reasons! This is the first international match between Scotland and England for quite some time. First time Scotland has qualified for a big tournament in about 25 years. If you're a football fan, this is a massive deal.

Plus you've had your summer holiday plans cancelled two years in a row, Saint Nicola has had you locked down since October - it's only been in the last fortnight Glasgow pubs have reopened.

And for the price of a train ticket you can have a weekend in London with your mates, watching a bit of football, having fun and treating it like a holiday?

It's obvious why people would want to go.

Gingerkittykat · 18/06/2021 20:10

Anybody who saw the scenes at the football matches in Glasgow won't be even slightly surprised at what is going on in London.

Wakeupin2022 · 18/06/2021 20:10

This is entirely the fault of the Scottish fans, travelling down in huge numbers when they had no tickets to the match or indeed to any organised screenings. Bloody idiots.

I forgot the England fans were Saints and would never have travelled to Glasgow in even greater numbers......

I can't imagine a single Celtic fan has travelled to London without a ticket........

think since then they learned to make covid vaccinations. So not exactly nothing.

And 50% of the (adult) population isn't fully vaccinated yet.

As for vulnerable children in the UK...
www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2021/jun/10/children-disabilities-priority-vaccination-england-education-shielding

disappeared more than a year ago and many are still out of sight. When the pandemic hit, 53,000 under-18s in England with disabilities that made them vulnerable to coronavirus began to shield away at home.

Kept off school long after their classmates went back, and away from friends, they have found their childhoods put on hold. And while the vaccine rollout gave high-risk adults some reprieve in the new year, those aged under 16, who have not been eligible for any vaccine, are still living in limbo.

Everyone wants their freedom back. But I live in a NW town and the new variant is rife and a family member is very ill. We have a good idea where they were infected. My DH was called to an emergency work meeting where leadership expressed real concern about rapidly rising rates. I am having to quarantine as well as I was in contact. I have just received notification from school and college that face masks are now required again from Monday until end of term. I now wonder if they may close early for the summer hols.

Even my 18 yo grandson is wanting his vaccination asap - he heard today.

I have to quarantine because some people take more risks than others and have not been vaccinated. We are not free yet and I urge all to take care.

mswales · 18/06/2021 20:14

Funny how the police aren't storming in to arrest people when they "had no choice" but to do so "for public safety" during the Sarah Everard vigil

Dentistlakes · 18/06/2021 20:14

The Scottish fans shouldn’t have travelled without a ticket to the game. That said, I’m not a football fan so probably don’t understand their motivation. I just hope they behave and things stay good natured.

@LaurieFairyCake

I was in central London on Monday and there was practically no one there. I have to go into zone 1 3 times a week and it's empty, been literally empty for a year
I think you must be going somewhere quite specific Laurie. Oxford Street is moderately bustling and even the City, though much quieter than 2019, is very busy by the standards of proper lockdown.
LaurieFairyCake · 18/06/2021 20:18

YOU'RE ALLOWED TO TRAVEL TO OTHER CITIES IN THE UK TO HAVE FUN

No one went on holiday to the Lake District at half term?

The Peak District?

Bath?

Cornwall/Devon/Dorset ?

It's ALLOWED to be outside without a ticket to a city Confused

I'm off to Birmingham to the pub tomorrow with friends

ITS ALLOWED

Stop picking on football fans unless you can honestly come on here and say you never went anywhere in half term GrinConfused

LaurieFairyCake · 18/06/2021 20:19

I was in Trafalgar Square (at the National gallery)

Practically empty

Manchester has a travel ban
LaurieFairyCake · 18/06/2021 20:20

Don't go to Manchester Grin

Rubbish.

Quiet for central London, but not by any stretch of the imagination empty.

Quite the opposite in fact. Traffic is still very busy.

Quieter than normal is very different from quiet full stop.

LaurieFairyCake · 18/06/2021 20:21

I've spent all of yesterday and today trying to get Wimbledon tickets (unsuccessfully Sad)

What football matches in Scotland? I didn't think a fan had been allowed into a match for 15 months.
Tealightsandd · 18/06/2021 20:24

She means the fans in the streets before, during, and after the football. I don't know about other teams but I remember the footage of the Rangers fans.

extravirginoliveoil · 18/06/2021 20:27

Yes, probably the rangers fans at the end of the season. If that wasn’t a warning, I don’t know what was.

Streamingbannersofdawn · 18/06/2021 20:28

I dont get it...my husband is watching the football in the room next door...lots of singing and chanting and shouting from the stadium obviously. I work in childcare...we need to be careful that only a certain amount of us sing nursery rhymes...eh?

You only have to be careful about singing etc indoors, if you’re sessions were outdoors it would be fine.
ButteringMyArse · 18/06/2021 20:31

Manchester has a travel ban

No we don't. There is advice about non-essential travel, which isn't a law or ban and means fuck all.

MaloInAnAppleTree · 18/06/2021 20:32

The (English) people in the local pub definitely haven’t got the memo about singing.

Streamingbannersofdawn · 18/06/2021 20:32

yeah I know but there are so many people there...shouting at the top of their lungs. it just seems so unbalanced somehow.

Anyway...we are doing all our COVID safety stuff like good little workers...I'm royally fed up with it all though.

There is a travel ban effective Monday between Scotland and a Manchester.
