Personal good news, DH eligible to book (36 plus on the website booking page now)!
Annoyingly he can't book as there are no second vaccine dates he can do 🤦🏻‍♀️

Thanks for your info and honesty @TruelyWonder I’m trying to assess risk for a trip to London later this week and it’s a bit tricky at the moment!

Great news about the antibodies and interesting point about what was said about the Kent variant @tobee

I did wonder if this new variant had sprung up here first would it have caused the same panic - as you say India is very chaotic at the moment, but doesn’t have a great healthcare system at the best of times plus it’s very difficult to socially distance in some of the poorer areas.

We’ve got a brief bit of sunshine this morning, my jab is booked and I’ve got a cup of tea in bed so I’m enjoying the positive little things this morning. Think I will worry about my trip in a couple of days when we are due to go and see what’s happening then

Just checking in as the Best Thread In The World seems to have dropped out of my active convos.
I just got back from my craft group which has just restarted.
My area just had two new cases in the whole of last week!

PomRuns · 18/05/2021 12:44

Europe allowing double vaccinated people to travel from Wednesday.

Bordois · 18/05/2021 12:58

If you have the NHS app (not the test and trace one) you can download a copy of your proof of vaccination ("vaccine passport").

I'm still happy to see that cases haven't started to rise yet . A larger proportion may be made up of the Indian variant, but every day that cases and hospitslisations stay low equals more people vaccinated equals less chance of a wave equals good news to me!

herecomesthsun · 18/05/2021 13:11

According to the Daily Telegraph, the government has acquired enough Pfizer to offer vaccinations to any 12-15 year olds who want it.

I appreciate that many people might not want to take this up,but my 15 year old started a sort of low dose chemotherapy last month and it is very good news that vaccination is becoming an option. (It is of course ultimately his choice whether to take it up).

SaveWaterDrinkGin · 18/05/2021 13:13

Just got home from having my first jab. Incredible experience- made me proud to be British!

Anyway, the nurse told me that they are likely to bring forward second jabs for everyone, meaning I could be called back in 8 weeks not 12. I thought this was just in high case / Indian variant areas or for the most vulnerable but she said no, likely to be early second shots for everyone.

Well done to everyone working and volunteering on the vaxx programme, it’s truly incredible.

Posting this here as I think it's very measured and positive over all. I continue to respect Nick Triggle's calm and considered analysis.

Bordois · 18/05/2021 13:38

I'm glad that what the term 'realistic possibility' actually means in scientific/probability lingo is actually starting to be explained now. It implies that its highly likely, but its actual meaning is up to a 50% chance.

So there's up to a 50% chance that the Indian variant could be up to 50% more transmissible.

I know they have to use some kind of baseline assumptions but its really not clear what they are and what they actually mean to the lay person.

TheChineseChicken · 18/05/2021 13:51

Thanks for posting that BBC article!

John Burn-Murdoch had a good analysis of the situation too, I dont know how to link to twitter threads, but he basically said that a lot is being made of the number of cases that are of the Indian variant but we don't know yet that its going to cause an issue

Yes I saw that one last night. Early days but it is an interesting take on what is happening

Great article. I've also been very impressed with Nick Triggle's measured reporting throughout.

Interesting. I wonder how much is psychological (no, I'm not suggesting it's all in people's heads and long covid doesn't exist...)
tobee · 18/05/2021 15:51

That Nick Triggle article is particularly interesting re the South African variant at the end there.

Overthebow · 18/05/2021 16:21

Cases and deaths down again today compared to last week, despite the panic over the Indian variant.

Good, I'd been too scared to look!
Overthebow · 18/05/2021 17:02

@TheChineseChicken 2.6% drop in cases, 27.9% drop in deaths.
