Follow-on to the happy thread: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/coronavirus/4210673-Can-the-40-49-age-group-now-book-their-vaccine.

(I'm jabbed, but just here to read happy news of jabs and try to book DH when it's his time.)

Husband aged 43 has just had the text from the GP! East Midlands

MrsFezziwig · 26/04/2021 10:26

They also state that they are ordering millions of Pfizer jabs so I might wait a week or 2 to get one of those.

The ones which have just been ordered are for the autumn.

Tealightsandd · 26/04/2021 10:28

Sorry I got confused AlexandraEiffel

Hoping all 40+ can book soon - perhaps by the end of this week or next? Fingers crossed for everyone.

Persipan · 26/04/2021 10:35

Just had my text and booked! Whoop whoop!

tulips27 · 26/04/2021 10:35

If I'm honest I'm really disappointed as someone who's 40. We're the first group to be broken down into smaller age ranges like this. Plus it sounds like thy might open it up to over 30s soon all at the same time making it harder for us to get an appointment even though 40+ is much higher risk than 30 (the risk seems to start rise from about 40).

tulips27 · 26/04/2021 10:36

Also it sounds like they might stop giving AZ to under 40s, as someone who is exactly 40 I am just on the wrong side of that, too.

I agree! Why have they started messing about with it now?! (Fully appreciate that I'll likely be vaccinated in the next few weeks and should be grateful for that, patience has never been my strong point!)
Eccle80 · 26/04/2021 10:44

I’m frustrated by it too, some GPs round here have been vaccinating as low as 35, whilst mine only got to 44 year olds last week, and now two weeks after the national booking went to 45 year olds, they have only added one more year. I am really hoping it is just staggering the impact on booking and they will add a year every day or so this week.

tulips27 · 26/04/2021 10:45

I don't know, but someone suggested on Reddit that it's to do with waiting to make a decision on whether under 40s will be barred from having AZ. If so, remaining over 40s will only get AZ to use up AZ supplies. I agree with that person, it's the only logical reason I can think of to suddenly have changed it.

wintertravel1980 · 26/04/2021 10:45

...the risk seems to start rise from about 40...

Not exactly, there is "no turning point". The risk consistently doubles every 7 years.

The risk for a 40 year old is twice as high as the risk for a 33 year old.
The risk for a 47 year old is twice as high as the risk for a 40 year old.
The risk for a 50 year old is twice as high as the risk for a 43 year old and is eight times the risk for a 30 year old.

TokyoSushi · 26/04/2021 11:04

Yes, I agree that this apparent sudden change of strategy might be to do with 'who should have which vaccine.' Better to wait a short while and have the right one.

Meltinthemiddle · 26/04/2021 11:05

As I've recently turned 40 in a little concerned about having the AZ vaccine 😑

Quartz2208 · 26/04/2021 11:08

DH just had his and the AFC Wimbledon hub definitely seems to still be doing Moderna (as that is what he got) at 44

Bakingboy · 26/04/2021 11:08

Still very little risk with AZ. I'll have that when I can (hopefully in the next few days). If other people don't want it then maybe that will speed up when I can get a second jab...

HSHorror · 26/04/2021 11:15

I think its quite rubbish. As the increase from say 1/250k to 1/100k or so has occurred while doing the 45-55? So fair to assume under 45 will be even higher still. So in fact if -40 get a different vax then 40yo will have the highest az clot risk. 40-50 will also miss out on any boosters. So may not be as protected from variants too. Even if they did it would probably be AZ.. ..
This probably explains so hesitancy.

Done!

By very handsome army guy at a North East Nightingale Grin

The road works are horrific, definitely add half an hour just in case. I added 20 mins and only just made it in time, after missing a turn.

WarriorN · 26/04/2021 11:16

Lol and just got my vaccine text!

Given that Wales is booking for over 40s and NI is booking for over 35s and both follow JCVI guidelines is it not more likely that they are updating in smaller age tranches to manage supply in England (with a higher population) rather than opening to all English over 40s with a small number of appointments available, so that many 40yr olds get booked before more “at risk” 45 yr olds? It’s from mid-40s that age becomes a riskier factor for covid, isn’t it?
TokyoSushi · 26/04/2021 11:26

You might well be right @lurker101

GhoulWithADragonTattoo · 26/04/2021 11:59

Pfizer jabs more likely to be for second doses for older people rather than for first does for people in forties I’d say.

Delatron · 26/04/2021 12:03

If you’re in your 40s I wouldn’t bank on waiting for Pfizer they will be for second jabs and under 30s.

Frazzled2207 · 26/04/2021 12:07

*Website says 44 by 1/07/2021

Early 40s have to wait until July?*

No, I hope not anyway. You can book online if you are 44 by 1st July this year. They will bring that down to 43 etc. soon (I hope!)

Wakeupin2022 · 26/04/2021 12:11

They only have so much vaccine supply. They are opening it up in tranches to keep using the doses They have and not overwhelm the system too.

At this time I don't think there is anything more to it than that. Pfizer is still being used for 2nd doses although that may change soon. Supply of Moderna is low and I think will be less than expected in May.

If they only have 1 million 1st doses then they only want 1 million to book. On the other hand, they don't want to give out 0 doses because everyone who wants it has already booked.

There are still a lot of over 40s still to be vaccinated (I am one of them). I'll take whatever there is available.

Florelei · 26/04/2021 12:18

I don’t get all of this distress over the tiny risk of blood clots. I really don't. People probably do all sorts of things every day which carries a higher risk of harm and don’t even think about it.

Also, why just over AZ? Isn’t there also a risk of clots from the other jabs?
